The mere fact that blatantly misogynistic adverts back then were _allowed_ to be printed in the first place goes to show the shift in standards when compared to today. Oh my god.
    Someone went through my old Tumblr for these, I'm sure of it!
    For about 7 years I ran a Tumblr called Video Game Print Ads, and while I wasn't the only or the first to pursue this as a topic and some in here were not my finds, I definitely scanned some of these! (At least the ones for SpongeBob and Little Nicky)
    Most of these came from outside sources, most dominantly the Internet Archive.

    8:50 From Wikipedia:
    In the sport of ferret-legging, competitors tie their trousers at the ankles before placing two ferrets inside and securely fastening their belts to prevent the ferrets from escaping. Each competitor then stands in front of the judges for as long as he can. Competitors cannot be drunk or drugged, nor can the ferrets be sedated. In addition, competitors are not allowed to wear underwear beneath their trousers, which must allow the ferrets free access from one leg to the other, and the ferrets must have a full set of teeth that must not have been filed or otherwise blunted. The winner is the person who lasts the longest.
    The sport is said to involve very little "native skill", simply an ability to "have your tool bitten and not care". The former world champion, Reg Mellor, is credited with instituting the practice of wearing white trousers in ferret-legging matches, to better display the blood from the wounds caused by the animals. Competitors can attempt, from outside their trousers, to dislodge the ferrets, but as the animals can maintain a strong hold for long periods, their removal can be difficult.
    The ferrets are occasionally put inside the contestants' shirts in addition to their trousers. An attempt to introduce a female version of the sport-ferret busting, in which female contestants introduced ferrets down their blouses-proved unsuccessful.

      I just recently found out that Gamestop stopped shipping Game Informer magazine with your pro membership - and you have to physically buy each issue on Gamestop's online store if you want it. They do not sell it in the store, or in stores. It's fucking shit. I've just been buying random lots of them off Goodwill online and eBay and catching up on ones I missed. And then you actually get them it's at least half the size as they used to be in thickness and content, and it's mostly just drivel.
      EGM was the true leader of gaming magazines - they had a great team of writers and analysts and they were very witty, extremely accurate, and very well packed with content. I could spend weeks reading the same magazine and find new articles I missed.

    Stevie Wonder could actually play Pong. When the games were simple white blocks on a black background, you can guide yourself with the squeal that the CRT makes.

    Does Vinny watch Clint from LGR? He literally makes videos like this all the time, going through all these old newspaper/magazine ads. Also I was subscribed to all those same magazines. Tips & Tricks was always my favorite, they had witty and funny writers.

    Seeing Kirby Super Star (my favorite game of all time) and Panzer Dragoon Zwei (one of the first games I remember playing and part of a series that collectively go in my top 3) both get cringey ads here hurts deeply. If you're curious Team Fortress 2 is the other member of the top 3.

    5:41 £39.99 was $76.81 on the 29th of July 1992. "Not bad" my arse.
    32:18 There's swearing so it must be Scotland? That's a new one for me.

    • @MrWolfSnack
      @MrWolfSnack 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes because Scotland had very lax cultural appropriation to swearing and they just accepted it as their language. Everyone did it, and still does it. But those ads were from porno mags so that's acceptable anyway.

    That Postal ad was grim, Jesus Christ. Thankfully the sequels went for a more comedic vibe, even if Postal III was terrible.

    • @MrWolfSnack
      @MrWolfSnack 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And considering that ad launched 2-3 years before Columbine, a bit of schadenfreude. (If it was for Postal 2 - 4 years after Columbine).

    Say what you will about video game commercials and such from the past, but to me, I personally missed the magazine ads they would present in the 90s - 00s. I feel like those were more edgy than the commercials they'd air
