Amazing how the greens suddenly make sense once you added in the background. Comparative colors still boggle my mind. The fact that you can see right "through" them, even though it looks somewhat strange in the beginning, speaks volumes about your skill as a painter. Great stuff.
This is first genuine alla prima art example I seen on you tube yet. I seen many videos of ‘alla prima’ drawing videos but they weren’t genuine alla prima. They were rendering, glazing, smudging etc .. lol. You did beautifully and masterfully. 😍
Thank you, you have very strong artistic analysis, yes, the way I work on my paintings and drawings just like you described, sculpting with brushes and colors.
Im artist myself, but this onewith Zimou Tan is really a fine works of art, so carefully masterfully done! I loved watching it. Am still learning from him.
it's rare when I write comment coz I like observing and practice than talking , but just want to say thanks for all this videos ..... i learned alot from you .
Sorry for taking me a long time to reply, you are welcome, and I am glad you like the videos, there are more new ones will be posted for your enjoyment.
Thankyou I've been looking for a demo of alla prima having just started out. The beginning made me think of coloured sticky tape which technically I think is going to help me a lot. 🙏💞
Thank you for stopping by watching my video, there are many alla prima paintings you can find on my channel. I like to paint a bit thicker at the beginning, so the paint can be pushed around, build and mix different layers of color easier.
@@ZimouTan thanks for the explanation. ok you got me I subscribed ! Its natural to me to be immediate in my approach I think but I need to learn the basic tools of the trade first so it's really a bit help to getting marks down. I was amazed at the little strip of light left on the cheek btw , accident or design? We may never know.....😀
This is the most amazing Alla Prima techique. What kind of brushes and canvas do you use to get so many stokes on top of each other and still have control?
Thank you for posting this up, I need to get more loose rather than my graphic/superrealism from graffiti style of 25 years I dont want to lose though. But cheers I noticed you worked from darker colours then worked lighter and loose. Also, was you picking up colours from the painting, with your brush then putting colours down elsewhere? Than mixing everything from a palette again, I tend to do that a lot. Lastly, I've got a bad habit of using 1-3 brushes though out a wet on wet oil painting Amazing artist man, PS did you use medium? and using canvas board or panel would help in my OCD in wasting canvases when used for oil sketches, thanks again sorry for the ?'s
Hello Mr.Tan. Will it be possible for you to share an instructional video explaining brushes for portrait paintings explaining what's a good brush and what's a bad brush? Will help a lot. Regards
Hey i wanted to ask that why most painters start blocking in with a warm Brown colour? does that have to do something with Cool light and warm shadows?
It will be a glob of mess for most people, for the first time to paint alla prima, don't be afraid, just keep painting, you'll figure out the characteristic of oil.
Alla prima is the prime method for a technical disaster, totally unsuitable for portraits; 1) the nose sticks out like a foreign object, with light of its own; 2) the chin and the cheek do not share same light and the shadows are made up; 3) the forehead is too flat; 4) eyes dive into the ridge of the nose; 5) the middle of the nose is 1/2" too wide, positioned below the middle of the eye; 6) subject's left eye and left eyebrow are too high; 7) subject's back of the head/skull is too shallow; 8) subject's lobes are either free or attached; if free, correct shadow is missing; So on ..

matthijsken3011 Your appreciations will keep me doing more demos in the future.
I always enjoy watching Zimou Tam painting and drawing - a poet communicating with brush strokes.
wolf727 Thank you for the kind words, and words of encouragements.
Yes, it's true talent unlike some of the stuff people call modern art.

Strong and so expressive in your choice of color and brush strokes. You seem to be sculpting with colour, movement and light. Very beautiful indeed

Painting without drawing, amazing result!
Painting faces with oil is hard enough........ Without a pencil sketch is even harder.
+Athenastarbrite I can't sketch faces with pencil in canvas, I start my painting with brush too.
It is matter of practice, you would be able to do it too, as long as you try.
@@athenastarbrite2955 it’s harder if you do the pencil sketch first
I like that his hair is green and blue. Very pretty.
+watchmejumpstart69 It is both.
Brilliant start and wonderful execution. It is always a delight to watch you paint.
Thank you Stefan, there are more to come soon.
As an aspiring artist and painter, this is really motivating for me, and is teaching me a lot! Thank you for sharing! :)

Me encanta,un gran trabajo, realmente me identifico con esas pinceladas,a ver si me atrevo de una vez.Felicidades.
Thank you, all you have to do is to start using it.
I love the process
Thank you.
I'm painting my portraits rn and this is a huge help. I'd love to see the reference you used so I could see into your process a little more.
It was painted from a live model, and I don't take pictures of the model.
Gorgeous!
Thank you.

This is the most amazing Alla Prima techique. What kind of brushes and canvas do you use to get so many stokes on top of each other and still have control?
It is not much of matter what brushes and canvas to use, rather the way to apply paints and pressures on the brush are more important.

It is easier to work from dark to light.
amazing! btw what song is this ??
amazing where other artists finishes u start from there!
Different person seeks things differently.
Shocked!

Very lovely, sir Zimou Tan, also the classical music complements...by the way, whose composition is this? Thx I enjoy watching
Thank you Gundina. I don't remember the name of the music, it was provided by TH-cam.
I have a question: do you ever use some kind of imprimitura before you start painting? Awesome work!
Jacopo Pfrang The answer is No.
Hey i wanted to ask that why most painters start blocking in with a warm Brown colour? does that have to do something with Cool light and warm shadows?
Not necessary, the under the paint can be covered with more paint.
Nice Chaikowsci music to this action
Thank you
Hi Zimou, do you somewhat premix the colors before hand?
+Mandy M Hello Mandy, no, I never premix colors before painting.
+Zimou Tan ok thanks. I want to try alla prima but never know how to start and just knowing it's going to be a glob of mess. any tips? :(

+Zimou Tan i will def try it out. thanks for the encouragement! :)

Beautiful! What song is this?
I don't remember, it was provided by TH-cam.
What brand paints do you use?
I uses Winsor & Newton.
This is similar to impressionism? Or is Alla prima the technique and impressionism is the style?
Yes, you can see it this way.
Is this oil on canvas?
Or is that some kind of thick paper. I honestly can't tell and am really curious.
It was canvas board.
+zimou tá que música e essa de fundo? essa música clássica?
+Fabio Emannuel Tchaikovsky "Nutcracker suite"
