Rick Allen, the drummer, lost his arm in a horrific car accident when he was 21. He had been with Def Leppard since he was 15. They DEFINITELY weren't gonna abandon him, even though so many people were telling them to get a new drummer. They stayed with him and waited for him to heal and re-teach himself how to play. He has a special kit in which his left pedal can emulate what his left arm could do. He still suffers PTSD from the accident to this day, and says drumming and painting is meditational healing for him. He's opened charities for wounded veterans and people who have had amputations.
He is truly an amazing guy. The entire story is inspirational especially when you know how many bands were never able to get along. Kudos to Def Leppard for being awesome.
This is a relic from another era. There was no TH-cam or internet. Music was consumed via MTV and this was the height. This video played at least every hour.
I remember watching the rock document and i seen the recreation of that happening, so sad im glad he survived Awesome drummer either way 1 or 2 arm he rocks 🙂
Car accident 1984..the car rolled over on his arm...instead of breaking up they all said hell no, we're family we'll make this work...one of the best drummers ever right there
I went to the Hysteria concert in 1988 with a girl I was dating and it was incredible... they played their hearts out and the place had an absolutely AWSOME vibe!! Freaking miss the vibe of the 80’s!!
THE DRUMMER FROM DEF LEPPARD HAS ONE ARM!!! That’s the most amazing thing about them! They were insanely great before his accident, but the fact that he carried them after...SSSSHHHIITT!!! And yes, I’ve seen them in concert, and it’s just like this video
I've been to see Def Leppard 4 times in my life and they've never disappointed! The best concert was the same tour that this video is from... Def Leppard- Hysteria tour in the round 1988

That's me rocking out in the video. This was filmed in Denver. I camped out for tickets with friends. Tesla opened up for them. Another great band. 👍 They're playing in the "round " in Denver. It was a great night. Both bands rocked.
I went to a Def Leppard/ Journey concert just a few years ago and it was amazing. Joe Elliott can still rock even if some of the high notes had to be skipped. They still put on an amazing rock concert. The guy was in his late 50s and still sounded amazing.
I think he mostly skipped the highest notes in the 80s as well. Mutt Lange rode him into the ground in the studio, haha. If anything I think he sounds stronger live today than he used to. See for example Live in the Round (1988) for comparison.
I went to a Def Leppard concert a few years back. Yes, they still ROCK. Rick Allen did such a long drum solo that I had time to run to the bathroom, meet a guy, get preggers, give birth, and send that baby off to kindergarten. My arm was hurting for him. He is the best drummer in the rock game. They put on an awesome show.
Historically, and well before this song came out, “sugar” was slang for kiss. It had no romantic or sexual connotation and was often used between family members and close friends. The most common phrase was to “give some sugar” as in “Come here and give your grandma some sugar.”
Every single time I watch this I’m amazed he managed to play this song with one arm. Most bands even then would have replaced him immediately after the accident. The fact they stood with him and he came back as strong as ever.
I saw Def Leppard a few years ago in the first row with Styx and Tesla opening. They still rock a fantastic concert! Sugar is like “give me a little sugar” or lovin.
I've seen them many times and it's ALWAYS a lot of fun! Saw them with my two best friends in '93 second row...sadly Steve had already passed. It was still a PHENOMENAL SHOW! LOVE DEF LEPPARD!!!❤❤❤

And they came out and played like they were live at the Filmore East! So good - so loud - so appreciated! You felt what is great alive and well in Rock music! So good.😎
The drummer lost his arm in a car accident. But he still plays just as good as having to arms. His drum set is specially made for him to use his feet more. He is so inspiring never give up. I have seen them in concert
The drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in a car accident yet the band refused to replace him and instead, waited while Rick healed, designed a new type of drumkit for himself, relearned a new way to play, and then they all went ahead to do THIS SONG and a whole lot more...creating their hugest hits...and becoming one of the greatest stadium rock bands of all time. LEGENDS. !! Def Leppard fans are hardcore.
I saw them twice in a 2 week span in '92. I had my 4 year old son on my shoulders for the second one in Roanoke, VA. The "in the round" stage gave everyone great seats. They started with "Do you wanna get rocked" It was fantastic. You heard the opening And then the curtains fell and they started rocking
Their concerts are a real show. The fans join in and it is a 2 hour visual and sonic party. I saw them along with Tesla and Poison and all 3 acts were lit. Very positive vibe to the shows, and great musicians as well.
Fun fact: The original version of this song starts like this....Step inside, walk this way, you and me babe......HEY HEY!! Then the music starts! I've seen them 14 times in concert! My favorite rock band of all time!
I've seen Def Leppard twice AND met them. I didn't see them during their biggest fame which was this tour. I saw them back in 2007. The hotel I worked used to host the concert acts as we weren't very far from the amphitheater. As there was a full house convention checking in, nobody noticed them checking out, except me, as I was the only front desk clerk who was free. Phil Collen asked if I was going to the concert and I totally replied "hell yea!", lol. They are awesome in concert!.
This was a concert in the round at the old Omni in ATL (which has since been torn down). Queensryche opened. I was there when they were filming this video. Great show!
I took my daughter to Vegas for her sweet sixteen b-day for their Hysteria residency at the Hard Rock hotel and casino. We were 4th row next to the catwalk and got a high five from all of them. They opened the show in costumes as a Def Leppard cover band called Ded Flatbird and played their songs not on Hysteria. Then they came out as themselves and did the entire Hysteria album start to finish, AMAZING. We have seen them together 8 times counting that show, she is 24 now and I'm 48. Had tickets to see them June 19 in Nashville with Motley Crue but it got postponed till next year.
I went to a Def Leppard concert. It was hilarious, because it was here in Vermont. They walked onto the stage, looked at us, and the lead singer called out "Vermont is fucking cold!" It was August.
That was just another way to say something that is said in music in today’s music...you know you are with your significant other and things get crazy and your girl GETS VERY EXCITED.... This song was PLAYED ALL THE TIME AT “Those Clubs”, but it was played everywhere else too!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the good work!!! You Are AWESOME!!!!!❤️
Atlanta Ga, Omni Arena, October 9, 1988 I saw this show..Stage was in the round..The band was smuggled in to the stage inside of equipment boxes. CRAZY!!
Saw them in the ATL in 1984 I think. Love, love, love them. There shows were lit. Any band that refuses to replace a member due to the loss of a limb is A+ in my book but the fact they jammed super hard, writing catchy hooks with gritty guitars, a driving beat from a one-armed drummer and awesome vocals was a recipe for incredible success. There music stands up decades later which is hard to do. Hope you keep going. Love your channel! ❤️
This was my favorite video on MTV back in the day. I was so excited whenever it came on. I was sad when it was not made the number one video of 1988 on MTV's Top 100 list at the end of the year. It finished second behind Guns N Roses Sweet Child of Mine.
I went to a lot of strip joints, all over the world, when I was in the Army. This was on ALL of their play lists and a favorite of the dancers, who really had a lot of fun with this song. Plus, the sound system in a place like that was made for this song.
The song is about exactly what you think it would be about, lol. Best era of music hands down! These guys are still around and they are touring next summer. Was supposed to be last summer but, well, you know..
One of my favorite 80s songs. I played their album Hysteria on cassette so much,I had to buy it 3 times. One of the best albums EVER!!! Every song is amazing.
Yes, I went to a Def Leppard concert in 1990 Dallas, TX. *Pour Some Sugar On Me* was just some random saying that they came up with in this song. I lived thru the 80's and believe me, this wasn't something we went around saying.
I went to see them when they opened for Billy Squire. They smoked him. The crowd didn't want Def Leppard to leave the stage, which really upset Billy to the point that he cut his part of the concert short. It was still awesome and 1 of the Best concerts that I was able to get to in the 80s.
I saw them in concert a few times and every time they were just unbelievable! Another band that's amazing in person is poison I think you would love their song talk dirty to me
Great Group!!! Props for them waiting for him (the drummer) to learn to play one-handed. Saw them live in Detroit back in '83 I think. '70s and '80s are kinda fuzzy. Can't imagine why!!!
I seen them 6x since 1981, I was 16. All amazing concerts. Last time, the concert was 2019 Las Vegas. It was a great concert, I could tell something was going on with Joe’s voice. I will be seeing them on July 17, 2022 they are coming to Milwaukee along with Poison, Motely Crew and Joan Jett and Black hearts. I am sooooo ready for another concert. They will be playing Miller Park, it will always be Miller Park, it’s now called the America Family Field ♥️🤘🏻✌️
This is my favorite band, i love thier music so much did workouts to them , danceing to them . saw them in concert and believe me if you can , catch them live
I went to see Def Leppard in Japan in 2003 where they played to 1,000 people. The band was supposed to go straight to the bus and not talk to fans but a college student and I waited by the back stage door and I said hi to them and waved about 50 fans to also come talk to them. They were really friendly, and I talked to Rick Allen for a few minutes before the others joined. He asked me: "What are you doing way out here?" I laughed and replied: "What are YOU guys doing out here?" since a small city.
This started out with Mutt Lange walking into the studio and Joe Elliot was just noodlin around on the guitar. Mutt went into the sound booth and started fiddling around and got the other guys involved and next thing you know here is a hit just from goofing around!
Def Leppard was my first concert, I saw them on the Pyromania tour when I was 13 and they were fire! It started a life long love affair between me and live music. I strongly recommend you go to a rock concert when they're happening again, there is nothing like seeing a band live!! Try to catch a festival (there are some finally planned here in the US for this fall that I've already got tickets for). Festivals allow you to see multiple artists for a fraction of what you normally pay to see one concert.
yes it was played at those "clubs" a lot for obvious reasons. but the reason i think most of us wanted you to react to the offical video was because they were one of few bands that performed concerts (and on this tour almost every concert was this way) the concert style is called "Theater in the round" the band is on a somewhat circular stage and the fauns are ALL around them. drummer in the middle of the stage and the rest of the band gets to runad around the entire stage 360 degrees around. is a very exhausting format for the band but make for an incredible show!
Yes been to 2 of their concerts. They are still touring, if they come to your town, you should go, they still give one helluva show, they haven't missed a beat with age.
It's kind of their trademark song, to their detriment. It's not what they're about, they're a kick ass rock band at heart and they've been tagged with this song...
Leader Singer Joe Elliot wrote the song. He said “ it’s a metaphor for whatever sexual preference you enjoy” He said he got the (sugar) from Sugar Sugar by the Archies.
I was at this concert in 1988. Some or Most of this video was shot at the Ector County Coliseum in The little ass town of Odessa Texas. I still have the same t-shirt Joe Elliot is wearing. I’ll look to see if I can find it and I’ll send it to you.
Thank you!! That makes sense. I think you’re probably right. I was totally confused by what he said at the beginning and then had the strip club in the background.
No. He heard right. This song was a strip club anthem just like Girls, Girls, Girls. Commonly played at men’s club around the world for decades. Uhm, not that I know first hand...strictly rumor, ahem.
This concert was from in the round they use the footage on pour some sugar on me and Armageddon it videos they have what they called 4 front rows on that stage they are actually a pretty awesome live band to hear I saw them a second time at the Toledo Savage Hall for the adrenalize tour also
Yes, I have been to only one Def Leppard concert, but it was an awesome one! They were on tour ‘87-‘88 for the Hysteria album- I was only about 13 at the time, but damn...great show! There was supposed to be a tour this year that recently got postponed to next featuring Def Leppard, Poison, Motley Crue. There are also some other artists joining them for certain dates, including Joan Jett! 💜 (I’d go just to see her!)

The drummer has one arm. Lost the other one in an auto accident 1982. Started to design a drum set as he was recovering.
I remember watching the rock document and i seen the recreation of that happening, so sad im glad he survived

One of my favorite bands back in the day. 80's kid.
My husband and I have each seen Def Leppard in concert 30 times.
Historically, and well before this song came out, “sugar” was slang for kiss. It had no romantic or sexual connotation and was often used between family members and close friends. The most common phrase was to “give some sugar” as in “Come here and give your grandma some sugar.”
Back in the day. Sugar first had sexual meaning. A kiss was a little bit later.
Very common saying in the south.
My older relatives still say “Come give me some sugar.” when I see them! 🤣
That’s how I remember it; my Grandma Mac would ask “for some sugar…”, just meaning a little smooch 😘

I've seen the band 3 times over the years. Last time was with Journey a few years ago. They sound amazing and put on a hell of a show!
yes it was played at those "clubs" a lot for obvious reasons. but the reason i think most of us wanted you to react to the offical video was because they were one of few bands that performed concerts (and on this tour almost every concert was this way) the concert style is called "Theater in the round" the band is on a somewhat circular stage and the fauns are ALL around them. drummer in the middle of the stage and the rest of the band gets to runad around the entire stage 360 degrees around. is a very exhausting format for the band but make for an incredible show!
Yes been to 2 of their concerts. They are still touring, if they come to your town, you should go, they still give one helluva show, they haven't missed a beat with age.
Waiting for the drummer to heal, that's real Love 💕
This was filmed over a two night sold out concert at McNichols Arena in Denver. 16,000+ fans each night.
This video was actually shot in Denver Colorado at McNicols Arena ( which was torn down years ago.)
I love their songs. Haven't heard this band in forever! ✌❤
This was one of the very first cassettes I ever owned when I was 10. Even then, I knew this song was a hit.
I AM IN THIS VIDEO! I was there the night it was filmed.
I once scored 4 touchdowns at Polk High
Seen def Leppard 3 times and they were awesome every time
I saw them on the tour that this video is from. They played in the round with Tesla opening for them. One of the best concerts I've been to.
I’ve been to two of their concerts, and loved both. This is what I grew up on. 🤘🤘
Saw them on their first tour of the States, 1980, and some of the guys were still teenagers. Opened for Judas Priest. Great show!
ohh loved this band when i was a teen, still a great album this hysteria..
Video wise, I think you’re looking for “Girls Girls Girls” by The Crue :D
Thank you!! That makes sense. I think you’re probably right. I was totally confused by what he said at the beginning and then had the strip club in the background.
You can replace "Girls" with "Squirrels" the song still sounds the same except with squirrels
No. He heard right. This song was a strip club anthem just like Girls, Girls, Girls. Commonly played at men’s club around the world for decades. Uhm, not that I know first hand...strictly rumor, ahem.
@@simplesimon8586 Quite frankly, male strippers would dance to this song too.
