Spirit Lake Motorcycles is True To The Spirit

  • What began as building motorcycles in his kitchen became a full-time gig for Brian Sloma. After listing one of his creations on Craigslist, and things just spiralled from there.
    “You see a car for nothing but a car,” says Brian Sloma, “…even if it has rims, is wrapped, and has wings-it’s still the same car. But you take a bike, you change the tank and the seat…what is it?”
    Finding bikes they like, fixing them up, and updating them is perhaps not as well-known as the firm’s now-flagship creation, a BMW R 90/6 that’s been heavily modified-from its Honda fuel tank on down.
    “Some people thought it was cool, some people thought it was awesome, some people thought it was just…ridiculous, and, like, that it shouldn’t belong,” says Ken Chan.
    Using many custom tricks that have since fallen by the wayside, the Spirit Lake duo says they’re still small enough to not have a ton of pressure on their shoulders if something doesn’t quite turn out the way they’d envisioned.
    “We don’t have a distinct style, but we have a distinct method,” says Sloma. “It’s cleanliness, when we put something together, it looks factory-or, it’s functional-it can be beat on, dropped…there’s different mindsets for where you want to go.”
    For those who don’t have a motorcycle yet, don’t worry, Sloma’s advice is simple: “…try it, and if you like it, you like it. If you don’t you don’t…but you probably will!”

      Well, he has a point. You can put a wing, some rims, a bodykit on a Miata, swap in something more powerful, shake the crap out of suspension, but it's still a Miata, invariably cute and sporty. With motorcycles, though, change a tank and a seat, and cruiser turns into a cafe racer, and vice-versa. Even mechanical changes can alter the look, because, well, everything is exposed.

      lettersfromhelen I'm a car and a bike guy, and he's right. A customized BMW R90 could look and be something completely different from the factory bike and entirely unique. Motorcycles are much more of a canvas for the owner to make it his/her own. That's just a fact. It doesn't mean cars aren't great, beautiful, or fun.

    • @ThePhillkillv2
      @ThePhillkillv2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can change a car to be what you want it to be.. I still don't see how cars 'aren't as unique' as motorcycles. You can make a car look like something completely different, and all it would take is some time and some money, just as these bikes do.

    Cool stuff - but I still don't know where this "build bikes" terminology ever came from. Existing bikes are semi-disassembled, and reassembled with a few different bits and pieces. Not singling this shop out, because all of the custom shops toss the same words around. But if a customer brings you a bike, and picks up the same bike when it's done....a bike wasn't "built".

      @Oldbmwr100rs 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      s0nnyburnett Yeah, it's a big thing. Most of these people can't make a bike run for shit though, especially older BMW's. Yeah, they're simple and all bit that means You really have to know tuning well, and too many people don't know a good running bike from something that runs like crap. I'm glad to see the interest, but really not happy about people running up the prices on these bikes without even knowing how to make them run.
      Been in the business too long as a master BMW tech, I'll have to get My own shop going as I miss the work (car restoration is too much like bodywork instead of getting to be a mechanic).

    Why do bikes return such poor fuel economy

    • @MindBlowerWTF
      @MindBlowerWTF 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CORRIGEEN71 Most bikes rev to 10-14kRPMs, You have to rev it more to just go compared to average car. If you will use full rev range in a car it would return just as bad MPG.

    • @SONOFAZOMBIE2025
      @SONOFAZOMBIE2025 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MindBlowerWTF why don't cars rev to 14K?

    • @MindBlowerWTF
      @MindBlowerWTF 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Son of a Zombie Mainly reliability. They get better low end torque, so they can have longer gear ratios compared to motorcycles, so they don't need to rev as high. Most bike with decent maintenance need to have their engine rebuilt at 60-100k miles, as for cars it can vary, but cars that have lower cut-off prove to last longer.

    • @henrykincaid6821
      @henrykincaid6821 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cars need torque which is found at low to mid range revs, bikes need power because torque would make them do standing wheelies and you get power at high revs

    • @IndieRockability1
      @IndieRockability1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Son of a Zombie A lot of reasons but mostly because of larger displacement used by car engines. It's all about what materials are used and piston speed. The longer the stroke the faster the piston has to travel to cover that distance at any given engine speed. Also the law of physics dictates as things get larger they get weaker pound per pound. A car engine can rev to 10-14k but would need forged internals to cope with the extra stress. A stock piston should never exceed 3500 to 4000 feet per second. a bike's piston speed doesnt approach that until much later due to the really short stroke. A Harley uses a bore and stroke similar to a small block chevy's and therefore has a similar redline.

    • @yunclehead

      ***** I don't think the statement was intended to mean that if you change a part on a motorcycle, that it no longer looked like a motorcycle.
      But rather, if you change the hood and front fenders of a Mustang, it will still largely be immediately recognizable as a Mustang. If you strip the body panels off of a Kawasaki Ninja, you're probably not going to immediately know what brand of bike it is.
