MattMC123 I don't think it was animated by Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks at all, It was animated by Rainmaker Entertainment. But it was made by Sony Pictures Animation in general. The budget is only $21 million for the sequel but the first one was $100 million. WTF! Do you know how to compare it. Let's just face it, animation is ruined!😔😔😔😔😔

1. Shia Lebouff doesn’t voice Cody. Instead he’s voiced by Jeremy Shada (who’s biggest role was Finn from Adventure Time)
2. There’s a scene where Vince McMahons character eats a fishes ass with a straw.
Apparently he wants fish milk...? That's something that happens. O.o

At least it wasn't a theatrical film.
Despite that, and also being on AniMat's Classic Reviews instead of his regular reviews, this movie will still get somewhere on the worst list in the Top 5 Best and Worst Animated Films of 2017.

I was actually terrified that I had to see that clip of the otter sucking the fish again, but thank god you didn't use it! Also WE'RE BACK A DINOSAUR STORY IS NEXT!!!
Big Z missing in this sequel was a big let down for me. Z and Cody developed kind of a father and son relationship in this first place. I wanted to see where they would take this in the sequel, only to find out he is just not in the film. It’s a bummer they decided to go low budget for this sequel, I was so excited of the announcement of a sequel and then disappointed it crossed over with WWE.
Not having Big Z back for the sequel is a crime. He was a huge part of Cody’s story. If it weren’t for him, Cody wouldn’t have become the renowned surfer he is now. This is like if there was a sequel to Robots without Bigweld.
I really loved Surf's Up when I was younger. I watched it over and over! I re-watched it a couple days ago and I got a complete nostalgia bomb!
I have several questions.
1. Where is Big Z?
2. Why is Cody the same from the first one?
3. Why did that fish drinking scene exist?
4. Where is Big Z?
5. Why does the animation downgrade from the last one?
6. Why did Cody completely forget about Big Z?
7 and lastly. WHERE IN THE HELL IS BIG Z?!?!?
This straight to dvd disaster has too much plot holes.

Something he forgot to mention: John cena is a nice guy (and I'm sure the other wrestlers are too, I just don't know much about them) but most of them couldn't really act. I'm just saying, wrestling and acting are very different professions.

Violet Rose actually the second one was about one of the characters being reunited with his family... just like Madagascar 2

The more I think about, Chris Buck may just be the next Brad Bird. He directed Tarzan, ending the Disney Renassiance with another oscar win for Disney (best song); went on to direct surfs up and give Sony their only oscar nomination; and then went back to Disney and finally won them a best animated film oscar with Frozen. Three animated films he's helmed; all three were nominated and two actually won.

Let's see, this is a Sony Animation film...and a sequel at that, this is getting the Animat Seal of Garbage, isn't it?

Here's how I would've written the movie: in the years since the surfing contest, Big Z/Geek has passed away for real from old age, and Cody is still grieving over his loss throughout the movie, not helped by Tank's constant bullying and Chicken Joe going around the world, meaning he only has Lani for comfort. And he doesn't idolize the Hang 5, egotistical this time, and only goes with them after Lani and Joe choose to become potential members since they're all he has left. During the lava scene, beforehand, it's Tank that taunts Cody while they're making hangliders, and Cody is visibly saddened and during the actual scene, Tank is the one who almost knocks Chicken Joe into the lava and Cody tries to save him and almost fails, but both are saved by the Hang 5 and afterwards, Tank is the one who gloats and Cody, fed up with Tank, furiously snaps hitting Tank with his surfboard and explodes at him in anger over how he almost killed Joe and how much of a bully he is, and the Hang 5 tell both of them off for their behavior, Cody then yells at them over how egotistical they really are and how he only joined so that he wouldn't be separated from Lani and Joe, and storms off, telling the latter two that if they want to join the Hang 5 and abandon him, they can, but he wouldn't. Overnight, feeling guilt, Tank leaves while the others continue. After meeting up with Cody, the two have a heart-to-heart talk with each other and realize their similarities in being dissapointments to their respective families and after making up, reading the text about the lightning storm, both decide to head back to warn the others and the two work together to save the Hang 5, giving them a bit a humility. See? A much better version of the movie that actually gives others character development or more natural character development in Cody and Tank's cases.

I have a theory.
The whole movie was a dream of Cody Maverick.
Why? first, the scene where the Hang 5 appeared for the first time starts with Cody sleeping, and it was a scene after he talked to a little penguin about his adoration to the suddenly existing Hang 5. So then Cody dreamed about them. And that would explain why there were no other penguins in the island and why Big Z disappeared. And the dream can be before the competition of the first movie or after, I guess it can fit both. Another reason could be how J.C. is so nice whith him.

I feel sorry for the voice of Cody in this movie because he also voices (or technically voiced) Finn in Adventure Time. He deserves much better than this.

Refresh my Memory. Did wwe ever had the nerve to put cena in a world title match AND the royal rumble at the same night? That was the Moment when i really started hating him more than cena. At least cena is now gone but this make Roman look strong bullshit continues. In his defense. I think he is a good wrestler but that doesn´t excuse this badshit insane booking of him. Or in 5 simple words. JUST TURN HIM HEEL ALREADY!
This doesn’t feel like a sequel, it feels like a rehash of the first movie.

i just realized something in the Hang 5 designs: Look at Cody's, Lani's or Tank's flippers and you'll see those have the shape and size flippers of real life penguins should have, but the Hang 5's just look like black triangles!
If you are reviewing We're Back, I would be pleased if you looked at a deleted scene where the villain, Screweyes, tells his origin story of how he got, you know, a screw eye before he turns the innocent dinosaurs into monsters using his brain drain cereal/pills and then mention that scene in your review.
Talking to Sony is just like trying to talk to Cartoon Network.
Notice how they put Chicken-Joe in a wet suit for no other reason than to not have to animate his feathers.

After the Spider-Verse film, they must now make a bad one. I wonder what it will be.
I rented this movie and it was horrible, I liked Surf's up so I gave this a chance but this was a 3/10.
I haven't seen the 2nd one but the first was good like you said with great documentary style, animation, and the voice acting. The first one is a classic, rivaling the movie "holes" imo. Both being my favorite movie. (Forgot actors name) pretty sure main character in holes voices Cody , at least in the first one which was perfect. The second one seems to be fast paced and cartoony if that makes any sense. The first one seemed chill.

Right when I heard the song at the end, I cheered! I LOVE We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story! I feel like it's not talked about enough, so I'm really excited to see you review it! Something tells me it's not gonna get the AniMat Seal of Approval, but oh well. XD
Yeah, it might not get the seal of approval, but here's hoping that he at least compliments certain elements of the movie. It's one of my favorite animated films.
It's an odd movie to say the least, but the animation is really good. It's a charming movie, and is pretty fun. There are definitely positive elements to it. I grew up with it, so I have a very soft spot for it. :)

I wouldn't be too surprised to see this as a prime example on both how and why making a sequel can sometimes become a MASSIVE risk in terms of its quality.
Just to save one of the best (but sadly overlooked) movies, I'm going to say and PRETEND that this doesn't exist.

Surfs up has been my favorite animated movie for the past 10 years so I'm just going to act like this movie doesn't exist haha
This isn’t a movie, it’s a fucking commercial. Calling it a movie is giving it too much credit,and in a movie where we see the otter Vince milking a fish with his mouth that is not something it ever deserves
the most sad thing is that Ratchet and Clank looked amazing in animation and effect deparment, i know this is like you said mat a direct to DVD sequel but come on, rainmaker can do better than that! and even knowing that most of the people that works at Rainmaker Studios are from the same team that did ReBoot.
Also another thing the emotions in the second film feel very unrealistic to me where as in the first the emotions were so realistic the songs with the emotions each character felt fit the song,such as Cody's sadness going along with the song Pocket full of stars
