Trousseau makes Simeon and Mattias look like well-adjusted individuals

I disagree about Simeon, Mattias though I can understand as like Trousseau, he tried to help people at first but then got a bit power hungry. Simeon flat out admits seeing people's lives fall apart is what brings him joy. To me, Trousseau is a bit of a tragic villain. He started out as a kind and caring individual who really wanted to help and save the lives of others, he was just too naive and horribly misguided to the point where he had to be put down. You can also see in Castti's ending card that while she did lose hope in him in the end, she still cherishes the good memories she had with him as well as her other fellow apothecaries.

@@areszeudion5153 Well it has been awhile since I played the first game so you are probably right (I did the boss rush in the Gates of Finis once and never beat Galdera). I think in that sense Mattias is the most comparable to Trousseau. Simeon though, is a flat-out sadist that revels in his victims pain and suffering. He does have a backstory, but I don't think its even in the first Octopath Traveler and it doesn't make me feel bad for him in the slightest unlike the other two.

      Yeah, both are the same.
They want to help people, but realizes the meaninglessness of their action in the end, which later broke their faith, distorts it and makes them a villain. Although, in Mattias case, he's more tragic because he ends up in the Darkness he'd foolishly gives himself into and tragically asks for a 'Light' which he'll never earn.
Trosseau ends up succumbing to a poison he's so proud of being a salvation.
Also, Simeon by the way? SCREW that sh*t! No mercy for the prick who toys with Primrose's life, like what the hell? Turning her tragedy into a musical play? It's creepy to think that he somehow manages to keep an eye on her for years!!

@@pat1509 The 'greater good'? In the form of mass genocide? Suffering is part of life. It hurts. It brings much pain and sorrow, but that doesn't mean we simply give into the easy route of finding 'salvation'. Just like the 8 Travelers who find out the meaning of their journey - you need to find your reason to live. Yes, life can be hard, but you - everyone can overcome it. The ends that justify the means should never be the route that leads to killing people in mass. How do you know they're suffering? All it does is paint you as a monster. Trousseau's view is twisted and vile but it's also not his fault. He was manipulated and became a bitter psychopathic murderer using his talents to mass murder villages. Yet he didn't start that way. It's not a vision if someone leads you down a path of murder.

It's a hyperbolic example, but Trousseau's inner struggle is something all healthcare workers deal with at some point. There can be an underlying dissatisfaction with the work: constantly looking at these horrible conditions, seeing the awful things people can do to each other, people that rely on you too much without putting in the effort to take care of themselves, and definitely coming to the realization that one failure or misstep can hurt or end someone.
The book might have been the tipping point, but Trousseau had been dealing with this for a while without seeking out help for himself. He's bright-eyed and high expectations at first, but that can be a horrible detriment when real life kicks you in the face repeatedly and those expectations are essentially betrayed. It's why the life expectancy of a lot of healthcare jobs, especially EMS, is around 5 years. You find your purpose and cope, or decide you've had enough and leave the profession.
