    Love to see the origin of these baos! As children of parents who own chinese buffets were all too familiar with the frozen versions of these haha

    Just finished the bao series, it is really great. Definitely inspired me to make some myself. These videos deserve way more views than they currently have, right now they're a hidden gem.

    Goldthread making me feel more Chinese with every video haha. I ate these as a kid but never knew the backstory behind them, just that they tasted good and looked pretty.

    I love these. the small and normal sized ones are usually filled with lotus paste.
    Im pretty sure they are based on the peach of immortality from Journey to the West.

      And Journey to the West based on the symbol of Peach which is also the symbol that one of these deities represent:

    Ok but this isn't a bao. It's essentially mantou. There's no filling. It's just a big mountain of steamed bread.

    • @serenelee8950
      @serenelee8950 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There is definitely filling, I eat it for breakfast on somedays. They fill it with lotus paste, similar to a mooncake, and place a salted egg in the middle. You can buy them in big boxes in Chinese restaurants here.

      @@serenelee8950 Yeah but the lady said that she doesn't add in any filling, so her Bao aren't really Bao.

    • @itchichi

      Yeah, the lady did say mantou at the start of the video

    • @Weeping-Angel
      @Weeping-Angel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would say that mantou is a type of bao. I’ve been using that term to refer to anything bread like ever since I was born so I think it’s okay to call any mantou “bao”.

      Sounds like unfilled in Suzhou, and likely with a sweet filling like red bean paste in Guangzhou (and maybe lotus seed paste too?)
      I bet there's somebody trying to make peace or green tea or boba filled version somewhere in the world. Why not, right?
      Time to check the 'Gram

      They explained. In Shandong it’s not filled. In the south it might be filled. But your question is legit. The series should be called Mantou and Bao. Mantou means bun in the north and Bao in some areas of the south.

      they specifically said that in her area they do not fill the buns, but in the south they probably do. you most likely will eat it with an assortment of fillings at home after buying
