I had a surprise when doing a slug tape shielding job. I fully expected tp have to make solder joints to maintain constant nudity but as I had burnished all the pieces to smooth them down they ALL made good contact. No special adhesives just a bit of OCD burnishing. I had had it in mind to pierce them here and there but they didn't need it. Result. So far it appears to have held no problem ...
A very Merry Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year to you and yours Dave ...... and a Happy Birthday on 4Jan. - My Brothers BD is on 9Jan. & I hit 76 on 23Jan. ......... Keepith on Truckin'
Copper tape with conductive adhesive. Look at the adhesive with about 10x loupe and you can see the little ground up bits of copper. You can reliably press it down just one time. If you pull it up and put it back down most of the copper bits get pushed into the adhesive in such a manner that they no longer touch on both sides of the adhesive layer. Pull it up twice or more and you might as well just throw it away. Stabbing with the xacto knife is a suitable way to restore conductivity but I don't know how long that will last. Best thing is to solder all the tape joints. Years ago I did a comparison of my Strat with copper tape before and after. No difference in hum. Then I used mu-metal. That made a difference. But mu-metal is expensive and brittle and cuts you to ribbons and doesn't solder worth a flip so I used indium solder. I hate to say it but the best thing to reduce humm is hummbuckers. Several decades ago I got some active hummbuckers for my strat. Has a very similar punch of non hummbuckers. Probably even better ones available today. But I'm not a purist. I would gladly trade my original Ibanez tube screamer for five hundred bucks and one of the newest versions.
Small gaps in the tape are actually not a problem, as long as there is continuity. There is a lot of OCD in DIY shielding practice. 60hz AC hum has such a long wavelength that it can be quite effectively shielded using chicken wire. Solid shielding is only required for extremely high frequencies... There is nothing wrong with making a shielding job look good, but the two problems come from no continuity, bad/dirty connections that create resistance which can cause hum by creating a resistive circuit in the shield... and areas too close to the switches/pots/wiring that can cause a short from a signal wire to ground. So yes, absolutely, bad shielding is unquestionably worse than poor shielding. TBH, factory shielding is more than adequate on *most* modern guitars. Merry Christmas Dave, hope you, your family, and your viewers have a good holiday and a prosperous 2020!
Hey Dave, I thought you said something about holiday hiatus with videos? And yet here I am, watching a video on shitty clueless shielding. A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Dave. I can't thank you enough for your videos and knowledge. I've learned how to do all the work on my guitars from you and fired my guitar tech.
@@moleman1961 try tapping them down with a soft, lol, guitar hammer. First put the guitar next to a humidifier for a couple days. Use your fret rocker to check as you go from the first to last fret. Then if it works don't leave it by humidifier. I made that mistake and the frets all popped up again. I leveled them by tapping them down. Give it a try. Lemme know
I'm January 6th, every year growing up as a kid "It's for Christmas and your birthday"; then when I got older "Hey who feels like hitting town for my birthday grab a few beers ?" "Nah skint of Christmas and new year mate sorry"
The only thing I do different when sheilding is I solder each overlapping on the tap for a trouble free connection. I've done 4 of my guitars and never have buzz or noise issues, it's definitely worth doing and taking your time with. It pays off in the long run! Great videos, cheers!
I had similar problems when I shielded one of my basses. The copper tape I used was advertised as having conductive adhesive but when I checked with a meter I found that it was not, so I had to spend at least another hour fixing the issue. Fortunately I checked continuity before re-installing the rest of the electronics.
I have probably said this already but hey, it costs nothing to say it again. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Dave. I hope 2020 brings you all health and happiness.
Did you use power tools when you removed all that stuff Dave?I wish you had shown that i really am missing those wonderful devices.Good job on that bass Dave, have a good one and a better new year........................
All you do is great fun and very pleased you share it with us all. Have a great Christmas to you and the family - from Pete and family in Somerset, South West, UK.
I’ve been playing bass since “81. Been doing my own bass setups and other “fun stuff” since I left Chicago and my favorite tech Hugh McFarland. I thought I knew enough by now, but l keep learning something new with each of your videos. Lol
my birthday is at the end of January, but i'm not flying anyone in. i'm at the point i was thinking maybe i should start celebrating again (instead of "just another day" to "yes! another day!")
Hell yeah! Do something. Doesn't have to be big...just in the mood for a certain food, a small trip, a game you enjoy, playing some music...celebration is multi facetted.
Mine is at the same time & I haven't done anything since I was 15 (44 yrs ago.) I think it's just an Aquarius thing lol. But if you wanna do something, do it. Only one you gotta make happy is you.
My Japanese Jaguar bass was very noisy even though it came from the factory with shielding paint and foil on the back of the pickguard. However the paint didn't go above the cavities. A quick strip of copper tape around the lip of all the cavities and hey presto jobs done. Really nice instrument, no more noise, although the neck is a tad skinny for my liking.
I remember that movie, when Jackie initially drives the taxi. What a cool memory to work with Jackie. Thx for sharing. Maybe try some Dave's Storytime every other month, I'm sure everyone would enjoy stories from work, from gigs, that certain customer. Gimme more and finally take your time off. You're really clearing ship in the last few days. Merry Christmas! Btw...watching so many of your videos, you often have fun with the short scales. Do you own one? Would be cool to see how Mr. Sandwichtime does a part build and what controls you like and so on. Vision 2020 * laser *
A Merry Christmas to you, Dave, and keep on your good work. I learned a lot by watching you and carefully repeating what you do. Its no rocket science, and after 2 years of watching you working on the fretts level of my basses is the only thing l was not able to do so far. But only because of the lack of the right tools. May be in 2020 I will have the tools. I'll report if it happens.
I can just see the Peterson moving (reflection) at 13:05 Pretty nice finish to be able to see it like that 👍 I like when you can see it in the movie 🎥 but its not a deal breaker. You sound really good playing that bass Dave. Happy BDay 🎂 to you as well my friend 👍
I took my guitar to a local luthier and asked him to re-shield my guitar and even provided the new shielding and he refused to do it and said it wasn't necessary. I wasn't going to force a man to do a job he didn't want to because I know he wouldn't do a good job. My guitar is a 1992 Carvin with original shielding so I know it needs to be replaced. And there's only 1 cavity so idk why he refused to do it. Anyways, thanks for the video! Going to have to do some more of my own research so I can get it done myself I guess :/
Do they slide Christmas and New Year to compensate for Thanksgiving? Whenever it might be, hope you'll have Merry and Happy holidays, and thanks for the vids...
I just finished shielding two of my single coil guitars - mostly out of sheer curiosity. I highly recommend StewMac's adhesive copper tape. It sticks pretty well on reasonably prepared surfaces AND the adhesive is conductive. (I don't get a dime from StewMac, but they seem to get quite a few of mine). I also highly recommend an abundance of time and patience if one wants to do a decent and correct job. Did it make a difference? Hum was reduced a bit here in my little excuse for a recording studio. I haven't gigged in years, so I can't say how well it works out there where the really nasty EMI lives.
For separate cavities that aren't covered by the same pickguard (so you can't put tape across the top of the body to connect them) do you add a ground wire from cavity shielding to cavity shielding?
You should start selling Jaguar bass guitars... You make want one and I'm trying to recover from GAS and *gear acquisition syndrome!* Christmas dinner is hurting already, to weeks of leftovers to go.
Hey Dave! Merry Christmas to you and yours! I've been working on, and building, electric guitars and basses for many years. My approach has always been to err on the side of caution, and I'll check with the manufacturer of the components (preferably getting my answer in writing 👍🏿) if I'm ever in doubt. Recently, somebody whose opinion I have always respected, angrily insisted that when wiring active electronics/pickups the pots should NOT be grounded to the shielding, just the wiring, and shielding grounded to wiring as well, but with passive pickups/electronics the pots NEED to be grounded to the shielding, and to the wiring. I think he needs to check his medication. Does that even make sense? If it does, please explain why. Nice bass in this one!
Constantnudity, instonenation, and other sayings are classic Dave. Just more reasons to love your channel
Don't forget his classic "tune it up to bitch". :-)
YT is going take this channel down because of all the constant nudity.
Cheers all!
Merry Christmas Dave Thanks for all the vid`s

There should be more twisting of pairs of wires carrying audio, if the goal is to avoid RF inductance.

Depends on your definition of chilly. About 55 in Tucson, as of this writing. In Seattle, we used to call it "Summer"!
