    • @NoraIconiq

      Its easier to teach puppies than grown dogs because as a puppy they are more impressionable.

      @@happyguy0105 technically you can I've slowly training my parents dog to behave while on walks. And she's a older dog. It would be easier if I wasnt living 2 miles away and dont have a car. So it's taking a lot longer and she behaves better for me than my mom and grandma. So yeah technically you can train a grown or older dog. Its just significantly harder.

    I might add that when Toby starts biting or is being nippy, the best thing is to grab a toy, rope, towel, stick, or whatever is lying around and stick it near or in his mouth. This is in conjunction with you telling him not to bite. Sooner or later, Toby will learn not to bite.
    We did this with my youngest Labrador, who was a real biter when we brought him home, and he doesn’t bite or nip anymore. The downside is that he now tries to carry as many things around with him as he can fit in his mouth. His personal record is 10 toys. How he does it, we don’t really know, but at least he doesn’t bite anymore. It is funny to see him open his mouth and watch everything fall out when he hears us open the pantry door, since we store the treats on the bottom shelf.

    • @coleenannis153
      @coleenannis153 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      when pups are too nippy it's a sign they left mom too soon. She uses those extra couple weeks to teach MANNERS (which includes bite inhibition).

    • @dogsfromthecity

      @@bobbybabylon1385 You are right that he doesn't have experience, he stated so himself in his previous video, but he also said he is trying to do the best he can in raising this dog and is willing to take tips. You imply you know your stuff about raising a livestock dog and care enough about it to comment, so instead of calling him a fool, why not provide some constructive pointers to help this man out, so that as you say he doesn't "ruin a potential good dog"? You can provide constructive criticism without being cold. If toys are not a good idea in this situation, then you could elaborate on why, and how you would get around it.
      Also, this dog may have a job to do, but that doesn't mean it should only be considered a work animal and not allowed to play when it is not doing said job. If the dog is teething, the toy could prevent him from getting into a habit for chewing other things, and seems to me anyway, a good way to train him at this stage.

    Also had a rooster who pecked my leg, pecked hard. Very painful. I learned how to be his rooster so he would never do it again. You can't let the rooster crow near you. There is this blue-green algae that will kill your dog the same day he drinks it. I believe it is a warm weather thing, but better to have him trained right from the start not to drink from the pond. I have a puppy of the same breed, also for my chicken’s and ducks and boy, she is great. I got my dog from a man who’s got sheep’s and he’s pyrenes watch’s for coyotes and wolf. They don’t herd the flock; they just sit and watch. That breed is perfect to keeps predators away and still good has family dog, but it needs to go out a lot, that’s where they are happy, with the farm animals.

    Nice! The geese and ducks here, even the chickens, will act afraid of my dog and cat at times. I think it's mostly a game. Remember Bill Cosby and his "scare me to death"? From what I've seen, that's what it is. Your dog is awesome and is going to be a great asset as you move forward. His calmness around the animals is such a wonderful sign.

    He's absolutely good as gold! And I don't know geese very well, but they looked like they were only making token protests at best and mostly happy to step around him while he paid more attention to all the new fun smells. It's amazing just how much this kind of behaviour can be bred into a dog.
    My favourite moment was when the rooster feinted at Toby, and he just shrugged and sauntered off. Perfect response, no big reaction, keeping the encounter casual and not stressful. You can really see he's familiar with cluckbait.

    That dog is a maremmano abruzzese or very similar. They were bread in Italy to protect livestock from wolves and bears. It would surprise me if he'd be able to work with animals like a shepherd, that's not their temperament, usually

    • @rc6133

    • @LemmiwinksH
      @LemmiwinksH 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are passive herders, at least in my experience. They'll keep track of the herd and if a member starts to stray, they'll keep note and if the member begins to stray too far they'll go and coerce it back.

    Since geese are migratory birds that fly south in winter to avoid cold, i'm curious as to what kept them from just taking off and flying away on you at the end of summer...?

    • @11matt11
      @11matt11 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Like other birds, not all types of geese fly south. These geese are bred not to fly south. And it mostly has to do with food supply and hunger, so if you keep feeding them, they'll stay.

    • @WindWipper
      @WindWipper 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@11matt11 Geese bred not to fly south? Any idea how that is accomplished? Or did you really mean 'raised' not to fly south...

    • @11matt11
      @11matt11 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WindWipper I believe bred. My friend raises geese, and over thousands of generations of geese, they bred out their need to fly off. Simply because the ones that needed to, did. Many birds do not fly south for the winter, mainly because their ancestors found a food source in the winter. Some types of cardinals and blue jays being the prime example.

    He's a natural! My Great Pyrenees Bruiser used to chase the chickens, not to hurt them, but just for some play. When he was small he couldn't catch them, but once he got big enough the chickens would just give up and stay still. He'd come on over, put a paw on their back, give them a sniff, and then go find something else to do - lol. Well, a couple of months ago our chickens stopped laying (molting, cold weather, etc) and then about 2 weeks ago I saw the coolest thing. One of the chickens started laying again and let out a really long and loud cackle (as they do after they drop an egg). Bruiser was over by the house and heard this commotion and forgetting what a chicken laying an egg sounded like thought the chicken was in distress. Boy he came racing over quick, head on a swivel looking for predators all the way, and peered inside the coop to make sure everything was copacetic. Never been so proud. Oh yeah Morgan, chicken turds - his favorite snack...get used to it - lol.
