Man, it's been 8 years. TH-cam recommended a random SOMA cutscene to me and I've just been sitting here for a couple hours not moving, just remembering the game. It really sticks with you like nothing else, huh?
There is a theory that construct is a scan of Imojine Reed (or whatever her name was) put inside a robot. Keep in mind that she died at Upsilon and Simon has her body. WAU could have put the brainscan of her into the construct as a last resort but since her scan was corrupted she is batshit crazy. She is also agressive because she sees her former body being piloted by Simon.
I think the Construct is one of the better monster encounters. Not because it's hard or anything, but it's a great intro to both the game and an introductory monster encounter. The Construct is lumbering, imposing, and loud. The soundtrack is also one of the better ones, it's really great.
well the scary part is that they dont know they're in a robot they dont perceive themselves as robots just as the main character does they think they are human but they arent and they're basically stuck like that forever
I think the problem here is that these aren't "people". Yes, they do have a consciousness, and yes, they can talk, but what are they really? Just a robot with a *copy* of a human mind on it. And even then, most of them seem like they can't even "think" properly, perhaps due to it being corrupt by the WAU or something, perhaps another attempt as preserving humanity.
I assume half the robots you encounter in the game wanted to kill us (the player) for our structure gel. The hostile qualias bots actually mention this occasionally when they chase you. Alot of these bots dont want to fall apart further is my guess
Soma is one of those games that would either leave you as an emotional wreck, or question your own reality and even what "Have a Conciences" really means. Great game though.
Word of mouth has helped this game a lot, by now it has sold over a million copies and most horror game fanatics either know of it or love it. It's got overwhelmingly positive on steam with like 40000 reviews
The mocking bird Carl would go insane if it was aware of what he is (a robot). Him thinking he is still just Carl and not a robot is the only reason why he is not insane or agressive towards Simon.
@@n646n Catherine created the Ark project and understands how brain scans work, and the version of her that we’re friends with was one of the first test scans that she did. Carl’s scan was taken by the WAU before anyone really realized what was happening, so of course he’d be confused. The idea of being in a machine body would be absolutely preposterous. Like he says to Simon: “your mind is pretty tightly wired to the helper but, nah, pretty far fetched.”
SOMA isn't scary in the sense that I often feel scared while playing it like I do when playing Amnesia, but this game really messed with me and even made me reconsider some of my views/thoughts about life, like the world has already ended at the point Simon wakes up at Upsilon, and yet life still goes on, but what really stuck with me was Simon talking about whether there was even a point in going on in the climber trip down into the abyss and Cathrine telling him, in summary, he is in charge of making his existence on the ARK feel meaningful to him, and that made me realize it's kinda the same in real life, our existence has no real significance, it's up to us to decide what our lives mean for us (and yes outside factors do influence this as well, I'm not saying abandon your bills/job because "life has no meaning", I'm just saying it's all arbitrary so there's no reason not to chase your personal goals and save up money to do the things you want to do).
I spent weeks with SOMA, just investigating that game's plot and story. Neat that others are on the same adventure as well. A few tidbits I concluded. That game is like a, 3 shits hit the fan scenarios at once. Meteors nuke the surface. WAU goes haywire, and Akers go rogue. And you're only left with one 'pure' old woman to recreate the human race at the end. LOL GG Game was a trip and a half though stoned. A game that puts you on the ocean floor, as a robot. Unforgettable.
Most people probably let the "old" woman have her euthanasia, so then you're left alone in the dark depths of the ocean, without power, aware of the monster-machine-consciousnesses lurking around the base's stations... Yeah wouldn't want to be in that situation, that's for sure😅
There are optional mirror scene you can interact Spoiler: you can see his reflection, a reanimated corpse in a diving suit with a cortex chip as the head contain Simon’s consciousness
imagine how different carl's reaction or dialogue would be if we had the option to bring amy or carl's ID tag, to see what he would say. i would assume that for amy he would say how she is his good friend and colleague, and how he cannot wait to get out of upsilon to meet her while for his own ID tag, im pretty sure he would ask where did simon get it from, and he wouldn't believe simon if he said its from his body thats few steps away
Soma is one of the best horror games I have ever played. I liked it so much that I have the after credits zone where you see the city on the island as my lock screen on my computer.

If I remember correctly all these robots got shut down after the wau is killed during the ending right? At least they weren't left in there for all eternity to suffer
The leviathan still seemed to be doing fine so it's anyone's guess wether or not the monsters could act independently. I think they do though, as it's a conscience in there acting on it's own accord
My guess is that the mocking jays probably shut down, but people trapped in mind coral or were otherwise afflicted by the WAU are probably still alive until the station completely falls apart. Which would probably take a few hundred years at least. So yeah not a fun outcome.
No. "Mockingbird" was the name given to pure machines with scans stolen by the WAU while PATHOS2 was still running, who still thought they're human. Simon was none of these things.
