  • Fiordland hunting NZ during the Wapiti ballot/bugle second period in the Stillwater block 2023.
    I've been dropped just above twin falls where I will do a 10 day solo backpack hunting in the peak Elk/Wapiti bugle and Red stag/hybrid roar. Some of the steepest, wildest country on earth.
    There is so much action as the weather window was fantastic....well for Fiordland.
    I also test fire the brand new Rab sleeping mattress
    Mega thanks for watching and MEGA mega thanks if you SUBSCRIBED, YOU ROCK
    Part two out THIS month, don't miss this epic Fiordland hunting New Zealand adventure. Stillwater block, I'll be back 100%

      Hey my brother, welcome. I was so lucky with the weather on this trip. Part 2 Fiordland weather rolled in but not for long.
      Period 2 2023 was defiantly the best weather of all 4 periods. Am thinking about heading back down for a winter trip but SouthWestland first for a couple weeks.
      Thanks again and hope all is well.

      Also that Rab tent is around 1.5kg and is just next level extreme single skin tent.
      Best way to describe it is, it's more like a super high end rain jacket that's shaped like a tent.

    That Rab mat looks the business. Seems they've gone one better than the thermarest xtherm which is slippery and the baffles shoot you off the side.

    • @JUSTWILDNZ
      @JUSTWILDNZ  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That Rab mat was next level, I think they will retail around $400 or just under? they are a little bit heavier than thermarest xtherm but the massive difference is the noisy foil that is in the xtherm every time you move.
      The raised side tubes, no noise, great price and insulated WOW!!!
      Having that empty pack frame under the Rab mat by my head and shoulders is a gold winning tip...well for me anyway.
      I have never come across a better sleep system for my body shape. The thermarest lite cot/stretcher is also incredible but around 1kg and you still need a mat, plus it's not great on tent floors.
      Time will tell how good and durable this Rab mat is but if it's got the name Rab then you know it's going to be fantastic.

    Does the tent get much condensation being single layer?

    • @JUSTWILDNZ
      @JUSTWILDNZ  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Phil, the condensation for the first 3 days was next to zero besides a little in the tent poles.
      There was a couple of days there was a bit dripping on my face in the middle of the night but because my sleeping bag is Nikwax treatment it was nothing to worry about.
      The tarp is a must for multi-day trips. The best way to explain this shelter is it like a rain jacket shaped like a tent? and can easy to put up in crazy weather, if that makes sense.
      The Rab Simmit is made for super high, extreme but drier conditions. Not at all for Fiordland conditions for 10 days.
      Would I take it back to Fiordland....1000%
      Feel free to get a hold of me on Instagram if you are thinking about getting one.

    How'd you manage a solo Mish when theirs a minimum of two per party?

    • @wolfferguson1293
      @wolfferguson1293 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My thoughts as well

    • @JUSTWILDNZ
      @JUSTWILDNZ  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      When you put in for the ballot your best chance of drawing is normally a party of two. The hunting permit is only for anyone that is hunting or carrying a rifle/bow, so any one that wants to jump in with the drawn block holders for the adventure can...with in reason and as long as they never hunt only observe.
      So in this case I was a party of 2 but my party member had a non-hunter with him for 10 days while I did my own thing.
      The FWF hate this and never recommend being solo so it's best to give them a heads up before doing it. I wouldn't recommend it ether but most of my hunting life has been solo and it's just want I'm use to.
