As an animator, one thing I was trying to scream into people’s ears is that animals actually have body language. Simply drooping ears conveys sadness more then they show in the finished product.

Well, it doesn't help that fandom communities start to make the animation community look like a joke. I.E. Toxic fandoms like Rick and Morty, SpongeBob, Stephen Universe, Sonic, Star Wars, or MLP. Sure the people who actually animate these do put their hearts into as they can, but sadly in a world where can almost say anything online to somebody that in we wouldn't say in real life because we either too nice or too much of a coward. (Including me, I'll admit to that) No matter what you say and even with the work you put into backing up your arguments, people aren't going to listen or give a damn about it. Just like what we've accomplished in school(Unless it applies to whatever careers we want to do), we'll just soon forget anything you and other people said because it just feels like useless nonsense.

    • @MamaMOB

Tyler Rakstis Oh shut up with the toxic fandom BS! If the fandom is toxic so is the property. Point blank the fandom makes the property. Sorry you can’t completely change something and still think you get the fans of said something. That’s not how it works. You bring up Sonic but they listened to their fans and changed the property to make it better and we’ll see how much money it makes. Star Wars didn’t and watch a little money they’re making right now. Reality doesn’t agree with your opinion. Entertainment is just a product like any other. If you don’t make your customer happy they don’t buy your product. That doesn’t make them bad people that makes you bad at making products.

Plenty of creators outside of Japan do an excellent job with "adult animation" as well. Heck, it is thanks to Ralph Bakshi, someone from the states, that adult animation got as popular as it did everywhere, with the first X-rated animated movie and his many other works that followed. There's plenty of animation aimed at adults outside the states, all over Asia and Europe and beyond, the problem is people don't seem to care enough.
But Disney kicked out every proper 2D animator they had from the Disney Renaissance, so clearly they don't care about making good products anymore. So much effort put into those phenomenal works by those people and yet the company doesn't give two damns about them.

making the characters "realistic" is actually a step backwards in the design process. when Simba (and the rest of the cast) was designed for the original Lion King animated film, the character designers were tasked with taking their source material, a real lion, and designing something that still reads as a lion, but could do everything that they wanted it to do on screen (talking, singing, emoting) and still look appealing. there was a need for them to design a cartoon lion. this is why a designer's job is work... this takes effort. every change you can point out between a real lion and Simba's original cartoon design, is the fruit of their labor.
taking that design and trying to bring it back toward photo realism is literally working backward. it's undoing what the designers originally did to make this animal animate in an appealing way. and all of the problems mentioned in this video are a direct product of doing something that was always completely counter intuitive. cartoon Simba was designed to move better, express better, look like he's singing, and have a better color palette... the whole movie was! and a lot of the "live action" Lion King's confusion over how the characters should move, or what their faces should be doing, comes from this. they're trying to keep the characters looking enough like their cartoon designs to be iconic, but adhere enough to what real lions look like to fall in line with realism. of course you're landing in the uncanny valley, that's what the area just shy of realism is, and this creative process is tailor made for landing you exactly there.

Seems the ones working on the newest Lion king forgot the most basic rules of Walt Disney himself.

I personally believe the major problem is that “Disney” as an entity, is huge and splintered. People think of the Disney remakes as “being made by Disney” because it has the name on it, but the truth of the matter is that the people who make these are a pretty much completely separate entity from Disney Animation Studios (who do the cartoony stuff) and they have no clue about the underlying values and teachings of classical animation, despite the fact that they basically make animated movies..... and the remakes are on top of that very rarely directed by people who even understand animation properly... at least that’s my take on it but it’s a personal opinion/theory. Just cos it says “Disney” on the box doesn’t mean you get true Disney classical values anymore, sadly.

  • @angrhii
    @angrhii 5 ปีที่แล้ว +102

So this Monday my college class actually had one of the animators from the new lion King in to give us an animation workshop.
I must say that the animators themselves had no creative freedom what so ever. They would have to produce up to 160 different versions (or passes) of each 1-4 clips, and each pass would be reviewed by the on site Disney producers/management team. and Each and every movement they wanted to animate would have to be backed by a lot of reference clips. If the on site Disney managers didn't like what the animators produced they would have to do it again, and again until they were happy with it, even if the animator didn't like the result.
Also to touch on the eyebrows, the animator that came into our class said that they were strictly not allowed to move the eyebrows to convey emotions, if they did they would be told to remove the movement during the daily pass reviews.
So with that being said, commenters, please don't bash the animatiors so much. They didn't have full control over the animations.
tl;dr THE ANIMATORS HAD NO CREATIVE CONTROL AT ALL

I once had a fellow student run into the back of me in front of the library, she was on her phone and had ear buds in... I shit you not she looked up expressionless took one step to the left looked back down on her phone kept walking. I could have given her a vacuum and she would have been a perfect human roomba.
Animated content works for younger generations raised on video games and anime because your brain has been strongly conditioned to understand it. Most 40ish or older adults grew up with a much stronger connection to people, and that is why you see such them display a much stronger connection to people, you wanted to play a video game your only option was to sit next to another person, you wanted to talk to them you had to call them, there was no texting. We go into a bar and see 7 people sitting at a table on twitter not talking to each other, and wonder what the fuck they are doing that is special enough to tweet about.

Even if you bring up the technical reasons why a movie is horrible, they brush it off as "but it was cute though." The average movie-goer/parent just simply don't care about how terrible a movie for kids actually is, thus we keep getting these sub-standard movies. The only time they do care is if it has something "scary" that they deem kids shouldn't watch.

I think there are some tho, that do work. Things that could be made darker, or closer to their source material, or just (in my opinion better). For making some closer to their source material/darker the new Jungle Book was great. Personally I think the OG Jungle Book just isnt a very good film, but the 2017 one was great (it actually had a story). The new Beauty and the Beast was better because the characters of the Beast and Belle were much, much better, and that one also worked in live action because it went further into being a musical, with new songs (Evermore is great). The same goes for the new Cinderella. And when it comes to making films darker/closer to their source material, there are 2 films that could be remade in live action 1 being Mulan, which I think is fine not being a musical, I think it works much better that way in live action, with the story and setting itself suiting live action. And then there's the film that I want to see 'remade' but completely different to the original if possible, Hercules. They remake it as is, maybe keep it a musical, or they could make Heracles, and have it be the 'real' story from Greek myth of his 12 labours, it may have to be R rated but thats fine

@El Jay And honestly, the "realism" trend really needs to take a big step back. I'm tired of it.
Like Frozen 2. Discarding the crappy plot and pacing and how in it's entirety the story lacks flow, the animation is boring. If you took out the scenes where Elsa plays with ice/rides glacial horses, there's nothing notable about it's animation. It looked like it was trying to emulate a live action film so much with all the boring shots of characters talking to each other and nothing else happening in the background or with the characters hair or anything. There was some expressions, sure, but overall? It was meh as hell. Even after they let Elsa let her hair down, they didn't even bother making the hair flow or blow around with the wind. Instead it's just there hanging limply like someone used up an entire can of hairspray on it or something.
like, come on. It's an animation for a reason- it's meant to do stuff that you can't do in an live action film. Where's the fun in just trying to emulate real life all the time?

OK, so I literally know what this comments section is going to say.. "it wasn't that bad" ,"You're just hating on tiny things that are off and not taking into account [insert excuse]" or its literally going to be pure hate for this movie. I personally am a 3d artist with years of experience in 3d software like blender and Maya and genuinely thought this movie did a pretty good job in the modeling, texturing and animating department. The thing you guys don't realize is that Sam doesn't really "Despise" this movie but its just the fact that paid professionals with years of experience were tasked with the making of this movie and they should just be held to a higher standard. Things like proper color grading, motion blur, and object physics are basic concepts that if done right, can go a long way to making a movie look amazing. In this video essay, all sam is doing is showing the average viewer possible technical reasons why the movie didn't engage with audiences. I feel like he's actually done a wonderful job (though some things I did find overly nit-picky xD) but overall has shown a lot of the technical side that goes into these movies while also taking great examples from other movies and nature (documentaries). So guys, before you form a polarized opinion on the movie, go watch it yourself with an unbiased opinion though do keep Sam's points in mind! This was genuinely a great video essay and I hope to see more of this content!

Why do you think anime from Japan is popular, they provide content that isn't just made for babies or with rigid family friendly standards.

8:53 Actually, warthogs will often kneel on their front legs in order to graze on foliage.
Their legs are a LOT longer than other species of pig, primarily to allow them to run up to extremely high speeds to outmaneuver predators (they can run up to 40 mph, or approx. 100 kph, I believe). However, these legs happen to be too long for them to be able to properly graze. So, as to circumvent this, they kneel. It's actually really funny to watch.
Even though I hate Disney with my guts, I can at least still begrudgingly acknowledge it for its accuracy in this not widely known fact.

"While adults can't empathize with animated characters"
They can make u do more than simply emphasize with them! they sometimes have more humanity than the humans themselves thanks to the artists that spend countless hours designing them.

I do support Disney for creative things like Wreck it Ralph and Zootopia but not halfassed carbon copy live action rip-off remakes of classics like Lion King and Beauty and Beast

When is disney going to make a animated movie in the real disney style like they used to? Im so tired of live action and 3d animated movies. I want to see some real art again...hand drawn cells not computer animation... :(

@@oludaebyrd4801 to me there is a difference. I do some web design work and have made simple animations, characters like you would see on flash animations or modern cartoon production(computer based) moving a model around on a computer is not that hard(making it look good can be duh) but its a completely different skillset than cell animation and hand drawing 12 or even 24 frames a second in some animation masterpieces. The biggest difference most of the time if the computer stuff will always look a bit too 'perfect' and thus it tends to lack flow, character and impact of something done by hand drawn art...thas why i consider one to be more of an art form and the other to be more of a process/product/job

@@oludaebyrd4801 You can even see this in other forms of animation...Take south park as an example, It had far more charm and artistic appeal when the animations were made from construction paper. They have now switched to digital for numerous advantages to production and in general it looks very sharp and well produced...but it lacks the artistic creativity it once had.

Cory R I completely understand it’s much different. Some people (not you) think you can just talk to the computer and it draws for you LOL!

I haven't even seen the whole movie, and I already know that my cat has more emotion in her left eyebrow than this entire movie has in its runtime. As an aspiring animator, a cat lover, and someone with a history of taking my beanie baby kittens outside in the morning, standing on a chair, holding them over my head and screaming in awful Swahili as the sun rose when I was a child, this movie successfully shattered my hopes like a metal bat to all three of my kneecaps.
