@@3nertia Because we have created this culture of giving most of the credit to the actors. The actor is just another artist working in a team of thousands of artists. Most animators and visual effect artists work 10 times as hard as the actor. Yes, the famous actor brings the audience to the theatres, but that doesn't mean that he/she should be overpaid while the post-production team is getting paid minimum wages. Sometimes those actors don't even bring the audience but still get paid in millions. What I'm saying is that all the artists should get respect, credit and a salary that they deserve.

Good to mention animators are generally the worst treated on a production team. They get paid less and typically have no benefits. They are not invited to parties or social events in most studios. You have to work overtime without being paid. I want animators to be treated better. They make the magic happened.

I wanted to be an animator for Disney movies growing up, thought it was a dream-killer when animation turned to computer graphics but I've realized over the years that being a Disney animator was one of the most stressful, taxing, and financially unfulfilling things you could do in that industry so probably dodged a bullet in the long run.

Western animation has somewhat created it's own tropes. Disney, Warner Brothers and Pixar have always heavily relied on selling kid's toys, meaning that their movies would have to be "kid-friendly". Disney in particular tried to push that trope to it's limits.
No matter how mature the actual topic of an animated movie from these companies, their creations were always going to be associated with "kid-stuff".
That is, of course, incredibly unfair to the vast amount of very mature animated movies. In Japan, animation is not considered childish in the slightest.
So in comes dreamworks, literally adapting the biblical tale of the exodus, an incredibly bloody and dark tale of betrayal, tyranny, and loss of innocent lives. Sure is "immature" what with all them movin' pictures.

    • @creeperslayer241
      @creeperslayer241 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Considering some of the animated shows I've watched, such as Overlord and Devilman Crybaby(which I didnt actually enjoy but helps prove my point) that shit is definitely not kid friendly but definitely could never be achieved in live action.
I mean, I get so sucked into these shows that I still have visible, physical reactions to some things that I see, but the same thing i look at in live action I have no reaction to, because it seems too fake.
The blend of the fake and the real helps to announce the fake, but having everything not real, somehow makes you forget that none of it is real.
Which makes no sense but I know you understand what I mean.

And both still require hard work because CGI still require you to know what programs to use to make sure your 3D models don't look like something from the uncanny valley.
I don't hate CGI animation. Pixars Toy Story was a breakthrough for animation as the first fully CGI animated film. But they used CGI because that's what worked for the story. The textures looked like plastic, but because it's about toys, it works. Meanwhile you have films like Dreamworks The Prince of Egypt that has a 2D style, but it lives up to the grandiose story that it tells. Even Disney's own Treasure Planet was able to mix the two together.

As someone who aspires to work in the animation industry, I really appreciate this video. So many people overlook animation and it seems our entire society (at least in america) tries to convince us that animation is only for kids. People forget that animation is an ART FORM. It is beyond the confines of one specific age group, or medium. For my whole life, I could never get the same amount of immersion from a live action movie as I could from an animated movie. As you said here- there is something stunningly human about animation. Something that connects with us in ways that live action never can.
I can only hope that the attitude towards animation changes over the years! I would love to see a change where animation is made for everyone again, how it was originally intended.

I pray that in the future, animation would be seen as an endless way of bringing stories to life and not something that is strictly for kids, and another thing those people who judge others for something that is “not real” shouldn’t be allowed to talk to others since they put people who likes things that “aren’t real” beneath them. They honestly more childish than the medium they are claiming to be so. I’ve always loved animation, and I’ve always dreamt that if I have the power or money to make animated movies, I would consistently make animated movies that would change the landscape people have on animation, but sadly I don’t, but I am optimistic that it might change, eventually at least...

Not to mention a lot of animated movies aren’t very good, hell now it’s getting more and more rare to come by good animated movies. Hell even Disney is not putting out films unless it gains them money. Which in turn effects the quality of most of their movies nowadays. It also doesn’t help that animated movies that are average at best. Like Illumination movies, are making more money than really good ones. So unless the industry stop treating animation the same way an average person would also treat it and start helping grow like it should, we would not stop seeing this art form get treated like this...

But when someone voices the “unpopular opinion” (there are popular opinions that are just politically incorrect and shameful to the dumb masses), they are ostracized when they actually do the Brave thing of standing against the trends. What the OP was saying was that we give way too much validity to the celebrities and call them Brave for something that is not difficult to say because it’s expected to be said. Even if you’re against trump, you shouldn’t take or give validity to a celebrity who pulling statements out of their asses without debating contrasting opinions. RyanHardt Well, I get what you’re saying as well. It’s a bit of a tangent, but it still has to do with the Western culture. I might even compare all this despise for true art to the increasing degeneracy of the liberal West. Even though animation is amazing, we disrespect it. All the respect goes to the undeserving live action acting. As a result, we worship the faces, or the actors, when they played only a part of the entire creative process. If we gave the deserved respect to animation, we’d give the the animators and creators most of the credit because they’ve done most of the work. However, in movies, the layman will only give credit to the actors, but not the directors, musicians, and creators. There is a connection between all these things we talk about. Actors are worshipped because live action movies are overhyped. Live action movies are overrated because animation is disrespected. Animation is disrespected because society is degeneracy right now. Society is degeneracy because... I don’t wanna explain that. Let’s just say we give ourselves too much liberty so we forgot what really got us here and what is really important in life. Taking that idea, it makes sense why the west is admiring actors (who are just people like everyone else and Keanu Reeves is an example of the good actor who doesn’t get power hungry) and not admiring animation (making ugly art [unlike Japan] or making the good Western art seem childish when it is a form that anyone should enjoy in respecting the countless months/years of effort behind it). Non-Japanese animation can be good, but if it’s not Disney/Pixar, the art style isn’t going to be beautiful. Look at the Anime that gets so much respect. There is so much beauty in the art and they can make ugly art but beauty is the goal. At the same time, Japanese don’t idolize celebrities like Westerners do to the Kardashians or the royal family or the A list celebrities or the online personalities. That stuff that we do is disgusting. But in Japan, even subways have Anime in their advertisements. The respect for their hardworking artists is, well, respectable.

Hey man I just wanna say as an animator myself who is studying at university; I cant say thanks enough for telling people about the magic of animation.
I really feel like your talking to me when you were explaining the effort that goes into the process of making these images move, I know it all too well!
There are big things on the horizon for animation, and I believe as dissatisfaction for live action remakes grows, the demand for a return to animation will grow too.
    EDIT:
Stumbled back on this video and saw my comment haha. I'm working in the animation industry now. I worked on Adult Swims 'Smiling Friends' and now I'm working on a new adult comedy that is yet to be announced.
To say that the actual process of making animation is a challenge is beyond an understatement. And although people have this idea of a collaborative and wonderful art culture; in reality it's one of the hardest jobs you can imagine. I do not hesitate to say that this industry eats you alive and that those that can make it through into permanent employment are some of the toughest people I've ever met.
The psychological aspect of pushing through the utter barbarity of this industry alone is immense. Crunches last weeks, people are underpaid, schedules are insane, and artists who stumble and fall can sometimes loose their jobs forever.
Animation is beautiful, and I love it with all my heart, but if a little kid said that they wanted to be one like me... I honestly couldn't encourage them to pursue it.

The power of animation is that it makes it look dreamlike, a fairytale land without limits. The real life version makes the world feel limited because we know and understand that world a lot better. A villain can look crazy and creepy but still good designed in the animation but in real life the design is limited because it is not appealing to have a cartoonish villain in a real life movie.

Let’s talk about claymation and live action for a moment. We are gonna compare a simple action: a character flipping into a scene.
Live action: the actor or stunt double is put into harnesses in front of a blue/green screen. Director calls action, and the harness moves with them as they do the flip. Done in an hour, at the least.
Claymation: each frame is one picture, and each picture is taken after each adjustment of the “puppet”. If they want the facial expression to change at any point, they have to replace the head or sometimes the whole “puppet” to get the one with the different facial expression. They use thin wires to hold it up so it won’t show in the picture. Someone, somewhere, is painting up the background that will be shown on the green screen. To get a split second shot, it probably takes the whole day, not including the animation of the background.
    So, yes, animation is underrated.

It's another concept that's exclusive to animation and drawings, because that balance is lost when you go live action.

It won so many awards because putting that much character into inanimate objects through animation had never been done before and was truly astounding. The creativity it required is still relatively unmatched today.

I think Emma Watson helped make the remake popular and that was it. Everyone still remembered her from the Harry Potter franchise as a very loved character and actrice. Well, and they never revealed Beast in the trailers. It was a way to lure people to the theaters to watch a movie that could never compare to the original. I'll be honest, I was intrigued when the 'remake' came out because it was new and eventually watched it while on a date with a guy that had a secret love for Disney. Now the whole remaking just gets old and I hope children will see that too and check out the original. I wonder if kids actually prefer this style over 2D animated and how long it'll last. Hand-drawn are slowly making a come back on kid channels.

When the remake of the original Beauty and the Beast was announced, I asked myself only one question. Why? In the transition to live action, it was going to lose so much - the expressiveness of the inanimate objects as you say, not to mention the beast, the magic of the setting, the fluidity of the musical numbers (they'd never be able to match *that* scene in the ballroom, or the liveliness of the town in "Belle"). Meanwhile I couldn't think of a single advantage that the medium of live action could give a fairy tale film like Beauty and the Beast. And of course, as it turned out, the remake did lose all those things, plus a whole lot more. The existence of it adds nothing to the world other than a great demonstration of why you shouldn't make live action versions of animated films.
Of course the answer to my question "Why?" was extremely obviously. Money. No artistic vision, nothing but cold hard cash.

Lots of games are moving towards photorealism in visuals and also have more realistic animations. Sometimes I find this change completely counterintuitive and innapropriate to the type of game that adopts this approach.

    • @mascotwithadinosaur9353
      @mascotwithadinosaur9353 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@Scroteydada Well yeah but I think games kinda have an excuse for photorealism.
It's kind of a sign that you're supposed to take this game super seriously and if not,it still helps build a slightly uncomfortable atmosphere, with all its "ugliness".
Now you might say that this isn't an excuse for photorealism and maybe you're right, but one of the reasons photorealism can be damaging is that you can't read a characters expression and therefore you can't read their feelings. In video games though, you're already in control of the main character. So it's like experiencing all of this yourself. When it comes to the other characters, well you still have readable postures, voice acting, plus most of time, the characters will mostly be humans anyway, and the action on screen is also readable. If a photorealistic video game DOESN'T have these,it just doesn't do visuals right...
Also, when I said "it's kind of a sign that you're supposed to take it super seriously" I'm not implying that you can't take a vg seriously unless it's photorealistic. You definitely can do that, but when you see a photorealistic guy with a gun, your usual reaction would be "Shit. That guy looks like he means buissness!",compared to when you see a simpler and stylized guy with a guy where you'd react like "Oh,that guy looks cool!".In both occasions you're taking him seriously, but in the first one he looks almost menacing, while on the second,he does look intimidating but not necessarily as scary.
And some ppl are just more attracted by realism. If you'd have me and my brother searching through Steam, you'll notice that all the video games I'll stop at are stylized and have vibrant colors and don't always look realistic, all the vg my brother stops at are photorealistic, possibly also with medieval elements or machinery.Even if it just has guns and military weapons, the guy is into that stuff. He would sometimes try to explain to me how guns and other things work and the physics behind them, until he realised my brain just doesn't retain such info (no matter how hard I try) and now doesn't do that as often, but he's still clearly into this stuff. He still plays stuff like Cuphead,Hollow Knight,Shovel Knight,Undertale and won't stop doing so.And I also play photorealistic video games sometimes and won't stop doing so.
But yes, they do sometimes fail.I don't know many that do but I also don't have alot of vg experience either.

      @Scroteydada 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@mascotwithadinosaur9353 An example of it failing would be Devil May Cry 5 recently. A third person extreme brawler where the animation is very important. It has all the same moves of the last game, but now instead of being cartoon anime guys, the characters have both scanned in faces and clothing. This is already somewhat jarring, but at first I enjoyed it for how comedic it was. You know that scene in Hot Fuzz where Simon Pegg does ninja flips over rural English garden fences? Yeah that for 5 hours straight.
Where this fails though is the physics. In the original back in 2001, Dante was given a long trench coat later in development so that his silhouette would be readable from greater distances. DMC5 makes the coat shorter and animated by physics. It looks sloppy as it flops around and clips in and out of him. A timeless principle of animation dropped so Capcom could show off their stupid coat flopping technology. It won't age as well as DMC4 because of all this.
Realsistic shooters are a way better fit for photorealism.

As someone who is currently in school studying animation, videos like this really give me hope that more people will begin to recognize the beauty of the medium again. One of my pet peeves right now is hearing people call the new Lion King a "live-action remake," which, even though I'm not particularly a fan of the movie, upsets me because of how it completely disregards the fact that people had to animate all of it! I get so worked up and excited about the animated medium, whether it's in movies, tv shows, video games, etc. because it's my passion, but so often entertainment created with animation is treated so poorly compared to their live-action counterparts. One of the worst culprits really is Disney, which started out as an ANIMATION studio! It's not just with their movies either. Their amazingly clever and charming animated television shows are more often than not treated so poorly to the point of cancellation after only a season or two (Wander Over Yonder, for example), while their live-action sitcoms take the lead, with even the most subpar ones lasting several seasons. Lilo & Stitch was my first introduction to the world of animation at the age of 4 and it's stuck with me ever since in ways that live-action movies just haven't. Thanks for making this video and putting it out there for more people to see, it really helps us animators feel even just a bit more appreciated :)

Jobs are all about connections and networking, so make sure you get out there and meet people and collaborate. My best friend and her husband have been working for about 8-9 years trying to break into the video gaming industry (they want to create video games and make their own studio and bring that type of business to our city located in Midwest part of US). Right now it seems like everything goes to California and I think it’s a missed opportunity. I’m an optimist, but I also understand the competitive nature of the field I’ve chosen, so I’m gonna keep working hard to make my way in the industry however I can through networking and so forth. "When the future of the normal film belongs to the engineers of matter (the human body and the body of nature), then the future of the cartoon film belongs to the painter-poet. And it is only the possibilities of the latter movie that guarantee the cinema its artfulness. [...] For the normal film is a temporary substitute of a painted movie. To disregard a cartoon because a photographic film already exists would be as absurd as to abandon painting because the mechanism of photography was invented."

I hate live action adaptations of animated films. It never ever turns out well. The idea behind the practice is literally just "How to suck all the soul out of a piece of art and make a quick buck while doing it" in my opinion. They never take the bad/mediocre animated movies to do it and try to "reimagine" them, retell them in a better way, because of course they wouldn't. They always take the masterpieces that don't need to be retold, don't need to be reimagined because they're near-perfect as is because it's literally ONLY about making money! And animation, specifically old animation, has a much higher likelihood of being great than any live action films because of how much work goes into them and therefore thought. Thought being the driving force behind quality in art.

This was a great video on the subject!
Animation is my favorite medium because it enables artists and storytellers to tell stories in a way that would be impossible to transmit in real life. Art, in general, seeks more an essence of reality than reality itself.
And with the animation, artists are able to bring an essence to life.
In The Lion King, for example, some artists of the project went to Africa to do some research for the movie. And their goal after the trip was to know how to convey the Africa they visited to the audience. Not what they saw exactly, but what they felt when they were there.

And the result was a great movie that brings a great visual experience to the audience.
We have so many movies these days that would look so good with animation.
But with many people seeing animation as something that it's only for kids, we have many films with excessive effects and CGI that will probably be dated in a few years.
Animation is a language that has the ability to tell any story and do whatever you want, and therefore deserves more recognition of the market and the audience.

Yeah...this is 100% correct, except for one thing. The UP opening scene COULD NOT have been done in live-action as the animators specifically used colours and framing techniques to convey the emotions behind each scene that could not have possibly been fully replicated in live-action.

(+Q) I would say that CGI definitely IS becoming more realistic and seamless over time, but you only notice the bad CGI. Everyone talks about how great the practical effects in Mad Max: Fury Road are, but ignore all the CGI in the movie. And nobody even realized that many of the super-suits in Endgame were CGI, like the white Ant Man suits. Even Iron Man’s suit has been primarily CGI for the entirety of the MCU. The thing is, the better they do with CGI, the less recognition they get because people won’t realize that it’s all computer generated.

"Animation is thought to be for kids"
    Japan: Hold my sake
No, really. The whole mindset of "animation is for kids" thing is purely a western mindset. And yeah call me a weeb or whatever, but ever since falling in love with anime back in the early 90's, I've grown to despise the mindset that "cartoons are for kids" because it's simply not true, and it CAN be changed here in the west if we use a more serious approach to animated movies. Stop "live-actioning" adult-themed things that can and do look better animated, and freaking ANIMATE the thing! Like, look at this year's Battle Angel Alita. yeah, the main character is animated, so is like 90% of the movie, but it's meant to emulate reality. If they stylized it and animated to look like say, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" but just emulating the style of the original manga and anime, the movie could have been much more amazing. (Alita wasn't bad, I liked it. I just prefer the manga and anime OVA's)
    Like come on, Dragonball Evolution????
Some things can be live-action, and some things can be animated. But we shouldn't force one into the other.

Speaking of Wander Over Yonder villains, thank God Lord Dominator made PhantomStrider's list of "Top 10 Most Powerful Animated Women" along with Twilight Sparkle (however, what makes the list flawed is that Strider could have put the Mane 6 on the list), Maleficent (much more so than Princess Aurora), Wonder Woman, Toph (wait, if PhantomStrider is aware that she's mega powerful, then she could be more than an honorable mention, which there could be a lot of on this list because a lot of characters were missing from this list and I could talk with PhantomStriser himself about this) and Marceline & Princess Bubblegum on the list. But what makes the choices look not as good as they could've been is when a Frozen character and a post-Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise character was on the list. "Don't underestimate those amazing, powerful young women!"?! More like "Don't overestimate those bratty teenage women! EVE in WALL·E and the Disney Renaissance women are way stronger!!!!!"!!

In psychology and observation of child development specifically relating to art... I feel like, as an artist, I can say this with at least some modicum of confidence... A child, innocent and full of life, views the world with open eyes and sees the beauty and the vibrancy of the world. You look at a child's drawings and there are strong saturated colors. A vivid blue sky, a beaming yellow sun, green trees and grass... you name it. When we grow up and learn to draw more intricate drawings and we base it more and more on reality, instead of the impression we get of reality...
When you look at these fantastical, vibrant animated movies you get to see what a child sees. Strong vibrant colors and expressive body language and facial mimicry.
When you look at the live action rendition of the same movie, you can't help but to see how cold and dim the world looks like in comparison.
