$10 for a week? EXTREME Budget Grocery Challenge! (vegan)

  • Going vegan is expensive, right? This week I challenged myself to an extreme grocery budget challenge where I only spent $40 on groceries for my family of 4. That means each person had to survive on $10 worth of food for all their main meals for a week (less than $.50/meal). Links to the recipes for each meal can be found below ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️
Also, if you're super observant, you'll notice I say tofu is $2.50 at the very beginning of the video and $0.50 later in the video. The $2.50 was a typo and it's really $0.50 per block here! Crazy!

Wow! Near me it’s just gone up to $2/lb, but I can usually get it cheaper at an Asian-owned grocery store.
When I first became a vegetarian (about 15 years ago) it was about $3.50 at target, and I found out that was a huge rip-off!

I'm in the US and I find that we can get the best price on rice and dried beans/lentils at Asian grocery stores. We especially like the Indian grocery for beans and lentils because they have varieties we can't find elsewhere. The bulk packs there are even cheaper per pound than stores with bulk bins near us.

It was a big investment up front, but worth it.... 20 years ago, we bought a wheat grinder (it does all grains) and a Bosch. These two quality items have saved me thousands and thousands of dollars. Not only for feeding our family, but our friends and family ask us to make them homemade whole wheat bread instead of buying them a gifts.
For our young poor family, we decided that instead of going out to dinner or movie on date night, we would go on walks together (sounds lame, I know). After we saved the money, I got the appliances for Mothers Day.

    • @TheConscientiousEater

It was hard but doable! I learned a ton my first time around...I didn't even use the spinach I bought and that was $3! I definitely could have included snacks if I had thought through things a little better. I'd be curious how long $10 would last in Japan...

Is it truly cost effective to make your peanut butter or is it just healthier? ie.... how much pb does 2lbs. of nuts make?

    • @TheConscientiousEater

It’s cost effective here in malaysia but probably not in America! I can make a typical size jar of PB for $1 here when it costs $5 here to buy. I’m americano can find pretty cheap natural peanut butter so I probably wouldn’t make it if we were in the states

I would totally be down with some more budget ideas! I live here in the US, and single by myself. I don’t think I can stick to a $10 budget per week. But, even if I did $40 per week, that would still be low and I think doable. But, I’m not always sure what to cook. Just need to do better searching out some recipes.

We have had terrible floods and lettuce and cabbage was $8.50. Just coming down in price now. Tofu costs $3 each for a similar amount. Tempeh about $4 . Seasonal produce is cheaper in green grocers stores than supermarkets. You can also get basic 1kg frozen mixed vegetables for$2.20 These frozen vegies were $1.60 at the beginning of the year.
