R'lyeh is a lost city where Cthulhu rests according to H.P Lovecraft
I lived in a small village in India for a few months as a Red Cross Aid there back in 2008. It was 775 miles from the nearest major town. The Village population was 913 people and to get there by road is very hard, with steep cliffs all over the place and vast amounts of nothingness (trees mainly). It was so remote that to walk to the next town (pop 70,000) would take a person of average fitness 34 days, due to mountains and rivers, forests / jungles and massive grass areas. Even by car it took us just over 2 days, but in the rainy season it would be around 8 days. Only 775 miles and it took 2 days to drive there. Now thats remote.

@@maulikshah28 Himachal Pradesh I do believe. It was some time ago and have been all over India and Asia since. However the village I think was, but not sure, named Malana,. Perhaps you can help me out here. There was a really old Statue on the mountain top that represented Padmasambhava, however that may also be wrong.

So literary references to point Nemo. R'yleh (Home of Cthulhu) was located at Point Nemo in the Lovecraft and Derleth books.
Skull Island was also originally described as poll of inaccessibility but for some reason they located it in the Indian Ocean where the Kerguelen islands roughly sit in real life.
And of course it's name is from 20000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne after Captain Nemo.
As an introvert, this is pertinent information.

I live on a tiny island in Norway. There are 10 people here. The closest inhabited island is around 10km away. There they are about 30 people. The mainland is 32km away. We mostly have a daily boat that travels to and from the island, but during winter that is often cancelled due to harsh weather.
What happens if you get really sick and can’t travel to the doctor?
@@ThePunisher014 Norway has a very good helicopter rescue service. Their response time here is 20 minutes. Which is faster than the ambulance response times in the big cities when traffic is heavy.

I live in a town with less than 3,000 people. Most people here don't know my name, but they recognize me due to my running habits. So the privacy thing absolutely gets worse in small towns.
Mind you, I'm not in a remote location. Takes me 20 min to get to the core of our greater area population center.
I was thinking about 'Into the Wild' the whole time, before you mentioned it. Sad story
I'm an introverted person who is fine with my own company, before the pandemic these remote locations would have been enticing - since then though, I realise that I do like the option of being around people, it would be interesting to visit these places, but definitely not live long-term.
Now this is going to sound very strange to you , I have a mancave with my tech equipment and xenomorph figures , it is a spare room for when grandson is over for a few days .
Switch off the lights play my music , i am gone my heart rate drops and i am literally not there i can not hear the music and i am gone , many times my son will come in the room and touch my foot and i would jump up .
I am not asleep , I am literally either walking in another place or i am just in total darkness , i have been doing it for over 30 years , i do not do it as a regular thing , but it is like i do not exist but do somewhere else .
Once my heart rate raises up and come out of it my body feels like it is fresh like a reboot , yes it is dangerous but what the hell i enjoy it and if i do kick the bucket it worth it for the experience.

I agree. I could do without any people or very internet. I wouldn't mind A super small amount of people who are super nice. I can't stand city's and definitely can't stand major city's. It'll be a while till I can go away somewhere...

Yup. We moved like 45 minutes south of jacksonville and then like 15 minutes south of our closet populated city. So really just going 30 minutes outside of a rural town is more than enough for most people wanting solitude. At that point it's not a weekly trip into town. It's a 'stock up for the month' type of living.

I moved to Salt Lake City last September. I was raised in rural Wisconsin. I like the options available in a city. I also like to go hiking through mountains. So far, Salt Lake is pretty great. For music I'd reccomend checking out some Khruangbin.

Se trata del único camino decente (o sea, no está asfaltado, pero con grava y relativamente entretenido) hasta el embalse de Caniapiscau, ubicado en el norte de mi provincia natal de Quebec. Dicen que al llegar al embalse, uno se encuentra en el lugar mas aislado de cualquier ciudad/municipio/aldea por "carretera" en Norteamérica. Hablamos de más o menos 700 km recorriendo esa ruta entre Caniapiscau y el pueblito de Radisson al oeste donde empeza esa "Transtaiga".
No sé si seria el lugar más remoto del mundo por "carretera" de cualquier zona poblada : imagino que no.
Pero igual, es un dato interesante aunque bastante desconocido que me provocó compartir.

I would agree with you that you can be more isolated in a city than in a small community in a way, having lived and worked in small villages and on occasion in London.
In both you can have all the privacy you want, the difference is that in a city you can be almost completely anonymous, whereas in a village, even if you keep yourself to yourself, people will create their own stories about you, and at some point you will hear these speculations.
As for sickness and injury, there are many reports of people dying unnoticed by their neighbours, so proximity to hospitals etc guarantees nothing.
As for me, I like solitude, particularly in nature, so after listening to people who have served there, I think somewhere like The Falkland Islands sounds pretty idyllic.
The way you decided to place yourself in your chair this time makes me feel like there's an invisible somebody sitting in it... just staring at us through the screen... the whole time...
Hi NP, I enjoy watching RLL geography related videos. This is a good one. My country has plenty of remote towns to visit and it also has a collection of very remote islands in the oceans that surround it. Hello from Melbourne, we are sorta at the end of the world.
There are a couple of other videos from RLL that are worth recommending if you haven't seen them yet. The first is the longest distance you can travel on earth by boat going in a dead straight line. The second is discovering what part of the world is opposite to where you live. If you are like me I can remember which countries or cities are completely on other side of the world from each other.

100% agree on privacy in big cities. There's so much going on, and most people have their own lives to worry about. I grew up in a city of about 50,000 and it was still too small for me. The numbers were fine, but the social circles were way too small.

Maybe not the most isolated place on earth, but I've always had a hankering to visit Spam Island, part of the nation of Kiribati. I don't know if I can send people mail from Spam Island but that's part of it. I don't think I'll ever go though. It's around 2000 miles from Hawaii if I measured correctly.

Privacy doesn't mean that no one knows anything about you, it means they're too busy with their own life to interfere with yours.

Man if it wasn't for the inconvenience of not having internet and Dominos Pizza near by, I would def move away from people. This year has been awful!
An interesting take away from that ocean shipping map is how the Northwest Passage is now a thing, seasonally at least.
If you've watched "Into The Wild" but want a more pleasant story about isolation try "Alone in the Wilderness" PBS video by - Dick Proenneke. It's filmed by a person on their journey into the wilds of Alaska, and they narrate their story over the footage. It's a calm, quiet, but fascinating video.

While I am a loner by disposition I would want access to people. And would getting away from people include no ability to communicate with the outside world? I am from Nashville and live in Brooklyn. If I want or need space I turn off the phone and am, for the most part, isolated.
I'm not a huge crowd person, but I don't think there will ever be a time when i need that much space from people, but i will use this bit of information to exaggerate when I convey that I do need space. I'm not sure how yet, but figuring that out is part of the fun.
I love that song! I first heard it on the Boondocks and it's always stuck with me, but I am a big fan of the genre in general. I'll recommend this artist I just recently heard in the past few days called Apashe. It's like electronic orchestra with some pretty awesome features. I started with a song called Devil May Cry and pretty much went down a rabbithole from there. Another good band is the Black Pumas, I'm Ready is a pretty good song to start from. It's a real old-school vibe to it.
For someone who loves history and knowledge, how have you not reacted to Sabaton? EVERY song is about MAJOR battles and historical events. IF…IF…this sounds interesting, your first song should be Christmas Truce. Do a cursory check on the actual event, and it will ADD SO MUCH to your first listen. If you need any suggestions, I’m not an elitist who will tell you to listen to obscure stuff that people suggest so they can show their fandom. I’ll get you started with songs everyone will enjoy.

I watched a video about someone visiting Tristan da Cunha a while back, it was quite interesting. It made me wonder if a simpler and more basic, less connected life like that would be a good thing? In some ways a small community where everyone looks out for each other would be really nice. But I live in New Zealand, so I'm already pretty isolated haha. I think the callback to a more basic existence called to me somehow ... but I don't think I could do it! Really enjoy your channel btw, always very thought provoking content! :)

I enjoy my alone time, I need it, I like how my parents house is where I grew up that if you drive with bike or Car left side you get more and moer to the village sides where sometimes a walk could be to the personal post - box (and it's not scandinavia) and if you go by tram or Car the nearest biggest city is not too close and not to far. Greetings from Germany.
So I really dislike humanitiy and being human ocassionally but like even with that distain of incooperated flaws so 0 humans at all that'd be to extreme even for me.
For most of these villages I don't think it's a matter of choosing to live there. It's just... home. Some people want a different kind of life, but most prefer what they are used to so I can imagine the people living there don't generally dream of leaving for the big city.

R'lyeh seems to be a lost city or fictional city buy a Norwegian sailor who just gives the coordinates I don't think any land exists there
Trying to get my head around picking an arbitrary point in the Artic that is supposed to be most remote but has a single closest coast. I reason there should be at least 2 equally closest coasts.
Except when you're talking about the arctic you're technically talking about a circle so the point should be equally distant from every point along the circumference (coast)
@@MangindDerousWe're looking for the closest coast (land) to the north pole. This doesn't have anything to do with the Artic circle.
@@TheCrocfiles look again at the circles placed around each point, none of them were concerned with the coast of the land mass they were located on but the coast of the nearest occupied land mass.

Most of the remote places (except interior Antarctica) have lots of wild food. You have to know how to harvest it, tho. & a poor place for vegetarians or vegans. I'm in the Yukon - next door to Alaska - and we were very surprised about bus boys death. He should have made it through the winter. The bus was hauled out & I think is being stored at the University in Fairbanks. There's money in it, as there is a cute little cult built around the story - I think everyone is a little squeamish, though. Regardless, Merry Xmas & hope the next year is best yet.

I live in a medium-sized beach town in the UK but would love to live somewhere more remote. I come from an engineering background, have a lifelong interest in electronics and science, though I've been working in construction design for the last 20 years. The problem is, my missus is my soulmate and we make each other laugh all the time and I hate being apart from her, however, I'm a nerd and love to talk about science, politics and other esoteric subjects that she has absolutely NO interest in. Unfortunately for you, this means that you will have to come with us for my selfish verbal intercourse needs 😃
