This is one of my favorite beat-em-up arcade games I play whenever I get to go to the local mall after class; along with The Punisher, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Alien vs Predator, The Simpsons, and X-Men...
It reminded me of Total Recall, the Toxic Avenger and 80's horror movies. The alien mutant freak angle is actually really sinister when you see some of the mutants and bizarre enemies.
Yep, it was all video arcade games. No stuff toys or claw games. I think it was around 1993-1994 (I was in 3rd grade at the time). It was popular enough that our school had to issue warnings during flag ceremonies about cutting classes.
Man, you can't blame Mayor Haggar for an alien invasion a quarter-century after he left office. Interplanetary defense was Governor Mario's job, but he was too busy chasing skirt in the Mushroom Kingdom.
I brought the Switch to my cousins house, his two kids (9 and 11 years old) weren't interested in any of the first party games, and went straight for the Beat 'em Up Bundle. I watched them shred through Captain Commando with so much pride lol Ginzu forever
And also, in this shared Capcom universe is Strider. The far future ahead. Guy's former master, Zeku, becomes the first Strider. Also in this universe, Saturday Night Slammasters.
They did that in the first MvC too. Both the Captain Sword and the Captain Storm attacks summon the whole group to perform them, though MvC2 seemed to capitalize a bit more on the group as a whole, as I think they can sometimes appear striking a victory pose together after winning. Also, in both MvC games, Captain can summon each member of the team separately for an attack: Jennety (Mack, in the US version) glides through the upper part of the screen spinning with his knives like his special attack in the original game, Sho (Ginzu, in the US version) jumps into attack with his sword, and Hoover (Baby Head, in the US version) appears shooting a rocket against the opponent.
Own this game as part of the Capcom Beat"em Uo Collection & remember playing this at my local arcade back in the day. Always loved the design of Captain Commando, Baby Head & Jack the Knife. I always wished Capcom would do a Captain Commando game for modern consoles; perhaps a 3rd person high action game by Clover Studios (now Platinum Games). Instead of making another Resident Evil Remake, it would be nice if Capcom went back to their library & made new games w/their more popular characters from the past.
@@3nkidu465 - DmC or GodHand is kind of what I had in mind. I also always wanted to see a Devil May Cry-style game w/Darkstakers' Morrigan as the protagonist. We kind of got such a game & what it could play as w/Platinum's Bayonetta.
With the current popularity of Marvel and DC superhero movies, you'd think that, by now, Capcom would've already taken it as an opportunity to revive some of their own superhero-type characters, such as Captain Commando and Viewtiful Joe.
There is a 4 player option on the PS1 port, but you have to enter a code to unlock it in the options menu. From GameFAQ's (and the code does work) Press Square + Triangle + Circle + X when the warning appears on the opening screen (it has one just like the arcade version has). In the option menu, in game options, press the square button to access the menu on the right, if the code is done correctly, you can change players up to 4, viola, 4 player mode.
I remember playing the arcade version of this game at the local pizza joint in my hometown. Not even the arcade in the mall or the dedicated arcade across the train tracks had this game. Ahh, fond memories of my childhood...
Duuuuuude, FUCK! YES! I rented this game from Blockbuster as a kid on a whim and it easily became one of my favorite best'em ups. This game is criminally overlooked by a lot of people!
My personal hypothesis is that the character in the NES game "Bionic Commando" is Captain Commando. Check it: The character in the game is only ever referred to as "Captain," not "Rad" (which he is first referred to as in the later Game Boy release). There is a reference to "Ladd" in the game's ending, but it is not made clear who this is referring to (I always thought that it was the helicopter pilot). The ending is played as an old Super Joe recounting the origin story of another great hero. Also, both characters have bionic arms, similar haircuts, and a penchant for visor-style sunglasses. It just seems like an idea that diverged at some point, but something to consider.
Captain Commando has been HELLA slept on. This is a really dope game. Baby Commando was always my favorite character to play with. Mummy Commando is a close second though.
There was a Japanese comic book series of this apparently. I got the first volume, and I don't remember how they explained the baby if they even bothered to. I always felt they just stole the idea of a super smart baby from Cyborg 009. You know, because video games get away with SOOOOO much plagiarism.
Ah. I never had the opportunity to pick that one up. Considering I got the first one on clearance somewhere, can't recall where exactly, I doubt that's going to be a cheap acquisition.
The manga version did explain Hoover's origin, but I think it was in Volume 2. They also added some background for pretty much every character that appeared in the game and even added a few more that were manga exclusive. Sadly, those mangas seem a bit pricey nowadays and they are not very common either, but someone scanned and uploaded both existing volumes a while back.
Thank u so much for continuing on man we need u bro. I've always wanted 2 play his arcade games cuz he was always my favorite character in every vs game he was in. Looks like they went crazy wit all the additional features in comparison to the other beat em ups
Capcom might have Captain Commando as an overlooked mascot, but we retro fans have Big Daddy Top Hat and that is more than enough. p.s: please, SONIC BLAST MAN is a must review and i still need someone to help me with a long lost arcade fighter if someone is interested to show off as a beatem'em up god!
This one is my favorite one. It's above Final Fight 1 just for how crazy it is (characters, small stages interactions, etc.). Keep your head up and everything will be good soon. Much love!
One of those arcades games I always loved in the early 90s but always got overlooked by TMNT and Simpsons, etc. The design and combat in this game is superb. An underrated classic.
I'd love to see the Medieval trilogy (Magic Sword, King of Dragons, and Knights of the Round), along with some Marvel beat em ups (Spider-Man, Captain America and the Avengers, Punisher, Maximum Carnage or Separation Anxiety etc...)!
Its from the first beat em ups i played and made me go deeper to the genre by searching on the coin ops other trying to compare their values. But it is a really interesting fact that captain was essentially at first a mascot hidden inside booklets introducing the games etc! That i didn't know and also the fact that this was the metro city in the future as well, never stopped to read the story of the game since i consider it as a whole not that interesting, having that B movie trope of a dystopian era since it is strongly being showed in the game as a whole. But back in the day we decipher that capcom used this name captain comando by their company name cap-com pretty clever if you ask me showing hinds of what they were somehow planning as company. When i got the chance i found this game as a first port from the arcades on snes, and though a pretty good port it lacked one of the big aspects of the original arcade.Though they were claiming that they had the robot walkers in the games booklet the snes version couldn't handle probably the burden of the animations? I am not sure but the robot walkers missing from there and i was like-AW this sucks!!! The next version i played on my hacked Psone was in copy captain comando which was a much better port for the stronger playstation and watching it like my pupil of my eyes not to be ruined because i had allot of love about this game. One of the games that put me even deeper to capcom as a company!
17:23 *I have to correct this point, there's actually a cheat to enable 4 player mode.* *In the "This game is only for Japan" screen hold Square, Triangle, Cross, and Circle until you hear a sound. You can check also in the button config if a Player 4 setting is displayed. the downside of this mode is that tends to lag if there's too much action.*
There was a pizza place in town called Crystal's Pizza that had a four player cabinet, but each player had their own screen and was character locked. One screen was for Cap, another for Baby Head, another for Mack, you get the idea. That was a great game.
It's so funny, I have literally zero memory of Capt. Commando outside of Marvel vs Capcom. I wonder if he'll ever have his own game.. I mean he'll need one hell of an update, but he seems to be more iconic in the MvC series over any of his other appearances. I"ll say this, the sprites here look pretty good, the mech enemies look pretty cool. lol, and I love the 'dominatrix's that ignore social distancing rules " Lol... your humour is so spot on...
Love to play with Captain Commando, easily my favourite character in MvC. He is an underrated character and I would love to see a live-action adaptation of Cap and co. It could be very interesting if done correctly.
LOL, I'm not sure what the enemies are supposed to be either, but I'm guessing they made them look like Foot Soldiers from Teenage Mutant Ninja (Hero) Turtles as that was very much in vogue at the time.
Love playing this game in the Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle on the Switch. You should review some of the other games in that compilation one day, especially Knights of the Round, King of Dragons, and Battle Circuit
I'm a huge fan of this arcade game and can give you an expert opinion if you don't mind sir. The Captain Commando hero is a ripoff from an anime called "Galaxy Rangers" by the likeness of ranger Shane “Goose” Gooseman and the bionic powers from Zachary Foxx that is the Captain of the rangers. I'm also a fan of the anime to boot, it seems that nothing is truly original and borrows from someone else's idea.
You know what I’d would’ve love as a kid if capcom had made a Captain America game base of the punisher engine that was from the punisher game as a sequel to the punisher game a team up from them to or three if you throw in nick fury
I finally found the absolute Mecca of beat em up deep dive videos that I've been searching for for so long(about a week). God bless you, Top Hat Gaming Messiah
I hope to see you do a video on Mighty Final Fight. As is tradition with other Capcom arcade to NES conversions, Mighty Final Fight takes a huge hit on the graphics but offers a very different gaming experience.
I'd like to think that Metro City got better after the Final Fight series, but went back downhill after Haggar left office. Granted, I can't PROVE that...
I love this game Onenof my favorite and wish it would get a 2nd Chapter and Graphics update like S.O.R 4.. Oh well as for now I enjoy playing it in the CapCom Beat'em ups Collection..
Nice new beat em up vid on Capcoms Captain Commando! Would Love to see a vid on Capcoms Dungeons and Dragons arcade games! Beat em up mix with Magic and RPG elements always really excited me as well as the awesome grafx and colors and action! YEAHHHHHHH!!!! Please do a combo vid of both as they are quite similar! 😍
I know it's a Japanese exclusive, but will you do Namco X Capcom? That game brings back lots of Namco and Capcom characters that haven't been in new games like the SideArms and Forgotten Worlds characters.
Many thanks for uploading these great videos and histories of these gr8 fighting games. I've played fatal fury on sega before I played art of fighting the arcade game and was instantly hooked on its mechanics and challenging gameplay back in 93. I was kiat introducing my 9 yr old daughter to captain commando yesterday on ps4 and she liked it! Loved the samurai shodown, tmnt torment fighters and I had the Sega version because my parents couldn't find it for christmas back in 95 which was fine... tho I could only beat it with Casey Jones lol. As a 10 yr old I immediately caught on that Robert Garcia was inspired by Steven seagal but nobody believed me so thanks for putting it out there. Your final fight videos are spectacular too along with snk, so, marvel vs capcom, and I cant wait for aliens vs Predator!! You bring about so much nostalgia for us 80s and 90s gamers and you're very much appreciated. I take my hat off to you good sir. Cheerio!
17:28 The PlayStation version actually does support 4 players through a secret code. Probably causes a rare game breaking bug so the option couldn't be offered as standard.
Zeku in SF V is the link between SF and Strider. Since Captain Commando is in the same universe as Final Fight, that means Captain Commando is in the same universe as Strider. Hence we need a Captain Commando and Strider cross over game.
There was also a manga that serves as a prequel to the events of the game, translated into English by Udon a few years ago. 12:36 Grocery stores here in America have started putting arrows on the floor as seen here to encourage social distancing, so that people don't pass each other in the narrow aisles. It's weird how electronics companies just gave up on 3D TV before a winner emerged in the format war. I was waiting it out to avoid being stuck with the 3D TV equivalent of Betamax. I would have bought a 3D TV if they had settled on a single format for the 3D glasses and after the prices had come down.
Back in the day, as a kid, I was both shocked and amused about how the mummy and the ninja could cut in half enemys. A little dark side to the genre that I never had seen before. Final Fight's more polished gameplay, nice graphics, nonestop action with enemys everywhere, ... this is a nice game.
The 80’s was an optimistic time regarding technologies advancement. In 30 years man had been to the moon, cars were mass produced and available for everyone and CD’s were music read by lasers! It’s no surprise film, TV and video game makers were optimistic about the future.
Sorta like Sonic was to Sega, Street Fighter was to Capcom. As much of a "Success" it was for each company, it only narrowed their focus on the market, pushing all of their other brilliant properties to the wayside. So sad.
It only now occurred to me that "CAPtain COMmando" came from the name "Capcom", and he was supposed to be their mascot... Interesting. By the way, I also think it's strange how so many people thought that the near future would be so different. "The year is 2044 (a mere 24 years from now, but oh well...). The space colony on Saturn's moon Titan has rebelled, but the one-world government will do anything in its power to reign them in." Hehe.
hello gentleman. is there enough material available to make a mad story of capcom's three wonders or king of dragons ? or is it pointless ? great work as usual and take care during these pandemic times.
Well to be fair, if an alien starship did crash on Earth in 1999 we would indeed have been in deep space by now. :3 (And if we did have the Second Impact by 2000, we're toast.
Yo yo Top Hat saying "high" from the states here. Kind of assumed you know but if you and anyone else didnt, from wikipedia: ""Mack the Knife" is a song composed for the 1928 music drama The Threepenny Opera . The song has become a popular standard recorded by many artists, including a US and UK number one hit for Bobby Darin in 1959."
At the time, science & technology were growing rapidly. It's no surprise that they would expect it to continue to grow exponentially to the point where we would have space ships, hovercrafts, & what not.
-CAPTAIN COMMANDO is my favourite beat em' up ever. I know Final Fight is legendary but CAPTAIN COMMANDO belongs to my heart. -I think the most memorable character of the roster is Baby Head. In Japan is known as Hoover. Because... Well... It's a baby riding a robot. -Thumbs up for your video Mister Top Hat Gaming Man.
Captain Commando is a cool beat em up game I just finished playing it in the CAPCOM beat em up collection for the PlayStation 4 I love those classic games.
Just adding this since I didn't see any mentions of it, but Captain Commando and Ginzu/Sho appear as background characters in Ken's stage in Street Fighter Zero 2, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to think both games as well as Final Fight all take place in the same universe.
Top Hat Gaming Man, I have some suggested fighting video games you should cover in future videos. Suggestions: 1. Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo 64) 2. Virtua Fighter (original) 3. Tekken (original) 4. Dead or Alive (original) 5. SoulCalibur 6. X-Men: Children of the Atom 7. Primal Rage 8. Samurai Showdown II 9. World Heroes (original) 10. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 11. Battle Circuit 12. The Simpsons (Arcade) 13. Sonic the Fighters (Sonic Championship) 14. Ultra Street Fighter IV 15. Savage Reign 16. Tech Romancer 17. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition 18. River City Ransom 19. Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix 20. Altered Beast
I’m sad we never got a sequel for this game. Streets of Rage 4 is an example of how we could see a sequel.
x2. I am a HUGE Captain Commando fan. It's probably my favourite beat em' up EVER.
There is this new game that comes in seven bundles.
Sequel or even a remake. Those characters designs are brilliant, such a shame to never use them again.
You should totally do Battle Circuit next. It's an absolute gem of a beat-em-up and was Capcom's last beat-em-up
Yes, spot on
I really want him to review cyberbots full Metal madness.
Return of double dragon for sfc and battle circuit are probably the two best adventure fighters
Battle Circuit is another gem that deserves a sequel.
Could be the spiritual successor of Captain Commando?
This is one of my favorite beat-em-up arcade games I play whenever I get to go to the local mall after class; along with The Punisher, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Alien vs Predator, The Simpsons, and X-Men...
It reminded me of Total Recall, the Toxic Avenger and 80's horror movies. The alien mutant freak angle is actually really sinister when you see some of the mutants and bizarre enemies.
Did you write this comment in the past? Your local mall has all those 90s arcade games?
Yep, it was all video arcade games. No stuff toys or claw games. I think it was around 1993-1994 (I was in 3rd grade at the time). It was popular enough that our school had to issue warnings during flag ceremonies about cutting classes.
Man, you can't blame Mayor Haggar for an alien invasion a quarter-century after he left office. Interplanetary defense was Governor Mario's job, but he was too busy chasing skirt in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Yeah man! Cleaning the streets is a neverending job anyway
😂🤣😂🤣😂😂
Isn't that the truth! 😁
😂😂🤣🤣

Ginzu forever
Ginzu is my ninja!
Ginzu 4 life
He's my favorite character in this game too; quick and fluid in his attacks.
Ginzu is THE NINJA.
Mack with knives
His appearance in MvC was just legendary. Everything from his theme, special moves to his ending were just done perfectly.
My fav character back then
Oh yeah! I like my dream team of Captain Commando and Strider, I rarely lost.
@Alex Arias
Captain N, the Game Master?

Your final fight videos are spectacular too along with snk, so, marvel vs capcom, and I cant wait for aliens vs Predator!! You bring about so much nostalgia for us 80s and 90s gamers and you're very much appreciated. I take my hat off to you good sir. Cheerio!
17:28 The PlayStation version actually does support 4 players through a secret code. Probably causes a rare game breaking bug so the option couldn't be offered as standard.
From gamefaqs: Press Square + Triangle + Circle + X when the warning appears on the opening screen.
Those aliens with girls at the end look more like rich guys with bongmasks or whaterver they´re called doing drugs
Zeku in SF V is the link between SF and Strider. Since Captain Commando is in the same universe as Final Fight, that means Captain Commando is in the same universe as Strider. Hence we need a Captain Commando and Strider cross over game.
14:09 "Not really sure why aliens would be interested in human women."
I've seen enough _hentai_ to see where this is coming from, lol!
I’ve seen earth girls are easy
This really needs a remake.
Yeah! I can see the world looking like that in 6 years from now :)
You should totally check out Ninja Warriors excellent beat him up game
The 80’s was an optimistic time regarding technologies advancement. In 30 years man had been to the moon, cars were mass produced and available for everyone and CD’s were music read by lasers! It’s no surprise film, TV and video game makers were optimistic about the future.
Sorta like Sonic was to Sega, Street Fighter was to Capcom. As much of a "Success" it was for each company, it only narrowed their focus on the market, pushing all of their other brilliant properties to the wayside. So sad.
What’s crazy is I knew absolutely nothing about Captain Commando. I never saw this game in arcades here in VA
The space colony on Saturn's moon Titan has rebelled, but the one-world government will do anything in its power to reign them in." Hehe.
it didn't, actually. Capcom is short for Capsule Computers, one of the 2 companies that founded Capcom.
Holy shit, I'm loving how much longer the patreon list is getting! And I love the struggle to say all the names before they scroll off screen lol.
hello gentleman. is there enough material available to make a mad story of capcom's three wonders or king of dragons ? or is it pointless ?
great work as usual and take care during these pandemic times.
I was playing this last night, I remember playing this a lot in the social clubs as a kid. What a great game!
Wait, if captain commando is set in final fight's future and final fight is part of street fighter? This means that Mayor cody screwed up
CAPtain COMmando = CAPCOM,
It should be a company mascot.
the one true capcom mascot
Does anyone else think
Captain Commando in the game look a lot like Earthworm Jim?
Well to be fair, if an alien starship did crash on Earth in 1999 we would indeed have been in deep space by now. :3 (And if we did have the Second Impact by 2000, we're toast.
Thank you so much, I was actually waiting on this video. Loved it.
Dude i always love your video content so please don't stop plus you funny at times 👍.
-Micheal Jackson’s Moonwalker

Love it. Keep up the good work. Do violent storm by
konami. Hidden gem among arcade beat'em ups
I'm glad you are doing these videos
I am really happy that you are doing much better. Be safe!
I play it in the Capcom Beatem up bundle, bring back good memories.
The player character of Street Fighter 2010, Kevin Straker, looks suspiciously like Captain Commando.
