This and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs had the most satisfying controls for a beat-em up, superior to even Final Fight I always thought. Not just the controls, but the way it feels and sounds when hitting opponents.
The Punisher could've easily been added to the roster in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 instead of having 2 Wolverines. Each time I play this beat'em up and look through the gallery in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, I question this. Great video by the way.
They never added Nick Fury, either. I always thought that Capcom should have done a Spiderman fighter featuring his allies & villains. Punisher was a guest on the 90's Fox animated Spiderman show too, so he could have been in it.
@Lassi Kinnunen - MvC3 Chris Redfield is mostly guns with some melee weapons..... What's the difference? What about Cable from MvC2? Lots of gun-freak fighters already in MvC games. Man, people are narrow-minded.
They added to wolverines because it was easy lol, that took no work which is why they did it. Punisher would have meant they needed to make a new sprite and that would be a hellavu lot more work.

I felt you glanced over the fighting system, which makes you feel free and in total control - every enemy is a punching bag whether they move or not, you can grab them, mash them, smack them around, throw them, grab them again from the ground, jump with them and slam them piledriver style. You can jump off walls, throw grenades, use a flash kick, run and jump and so on. The most satisfying beat-em-up I've ever played.
The Genesis port of Punisher was so baffling being that they censored certain things when the Genesis was known to be the more "mature" system at the time. Not sure why Capcom got Sculptured Software (WWF Wrestlemania The Arcade Game, Mortal Kombat, The Simpsons: Barts Nightmare) to develop it but they definitely could have done a better job with it.
This was my introduction to the punisher, that the end boss was the kingpin blew my mind, since I knew him from spiderman and I wasn't aware that the punisher was a marvel character as well

But eventually everyone took a chance on the merc. Pretty wild But Capcom, excellent. Seriously they delivered an awesome experience 😎
if you want to know what the Punisher was like when they made the game, I recommend The Punisher volume 2, started in 1987 (104 issues). Frank Castle is better integrated into the Marvel universe, and uses all sorts of advanced technology.
Capcom and Marvel working together has got to be the one of if not the best collaborations in video games. I honestly wish some action figure company decided to make high quality action figures based on the Capcom game sprites. Can you imagine a Psylocke or Rogue figure based on their game versions?! I know Toy Biz tried it but those were horrible.
@@sidearmsalpha You're absolutely right! The Toybiz versions were a valiant attempt, but were horrible (I actually own Morrigan and Akuma from that line)! If Kotobukiya or some other really awesome company got chance to do high-risk figures like psylocke, Rogue, ( based on their win animations or special moves!)and let's not forget the ever beautiful Chun-Li with Jill Valentine, we'd be in business!
"I am the Punisher. "And if you're guilty, you're dead." This was one of many arcade games I've found at a local Burger King at a strip mall I'd visit on school field trips, including Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, X-Men: Children of the Atom and Street Fighter II.
This should’ve been a Fantastic Four game with up to 4 players. Because the Punisher deserves way better than just a 2D beat ‘em up, like how Capcom gave Spawn the groundbreaking *In the Demon's Hand* 3D game.
This was one I'd play every time I went to the arcade, it's top of the form beat em up gameplay from Capcom, and it's also where I first saw Nick Fury. Yes children ,he was once a white man. The genesis port comes close, but not really, the arcade version just has to be played any way you can. It's such visceral fun, use an arcade stick if you have one.
@@daniel-zh9nj6yn6y yes and he's clearly based on Sam without his knowledge. They're just lucky he was flattered and so was he to allow it considering how many roles it's gotten him now.
I discoverd a ps1 hidden gem i didnt realise existed till today tatsunoko fight. It never left japan but anyone familliar with gatchaman/battle of the planets/g force will recognise the characters. Its a 1 on 1 fighter based on that show and even features the music from the show on some of the stages. The only fighter i knew of that featured the gatchaman team before that was tatsunoko vs capcom on the wii. Theres also a gatchaman shooter that was released in japan as part of the simple series on ps1 as well. That plays as a vertically scrolling shooter. Dont know why i felt the need to mention any of that lol. Just a big fan of the series from the early 80s and always nice to see g force in a game
I think having only two players at most feels right for a Punisher game, he's supposed to be a lone wolf and Nick Fury's company is already pushing it. But it's even better for gameplay balance since restricting the players' number of sprites allowed for more enemy sprites to be on the screen which is good since you're using firearms a lot here and it really drives home the feel of being always outnumbered but never outgunned.
Since Disney also owns Fox,they can publish Capcom’s Avp game and Marvel games in a collection someday...also the cyborg enemies are the guys from the Logan movie.
The X-Cutioners or something, iirc they fought Punisher during the Acts of Vengeance crossover in the 90s, when villains swapped the regular heroes they fought.

huh- I was curious as to why a game I found pretty much a generic brawler (for the time) was so history-rocking, but you made it clear in the end, lol. Nice work! It really was quite well-made- I think it just didn't stand out as much because I'd seen AvP first. When did the genre start getting called "Brawlers" anyways? I came up with that when I was a kid to differentiate them, as gaming mags didn't have an official name back then, but I've seen both "Beat 'em Up" and "Brawler" used in the modern era.
