What a video… combines the spontaneity of a personal diary entry with the summing up the experience of a seasoned photographer. One detail revealed from 4:36 on shows we are akin souls. When going for a bike ride or a stroll in the town, I tend to take the oldest small camera with me (E-M1 orig. or GM1) just to take that “pressure” off… and it works really. I already thought I was a bit weird but am now glad to see how you explained it. Again you saved the video at the very end, when your checksum word _blooming’_ eventually fell in place.
Thank you for the encouragement Emily! I am definitely in a little bit of a slump in terms of taking photos and hopefully this will get me back out there. I love your channel!
Have gone from a full frame Nikon DSLR, to an APSC Sony and now a GM5 which I bought for £400 2 months ago used from Amazon, after binge watching your TH-cam videos. It lives in my pocket (with the 14-42mm lens) and I absolutely love it. I have not used my other cameras since buying it. The images can be a little noisy in low light (but can be improved no end in processing), and it's focus tracking is not up to modern cameras, but the fact that it is so pocketable means it is always in my pocket - if I use it or not. I never have that 'Is it worth taking a camera?' decision to make now.
7:57 you could probably cut it off carefully, and use small plier to pull it out, and get a new cover. Maybe you can use a thin knife to spre it out enough to push it out fully.
So many good points in this video! I think we're all guilty all feeling like the everyday shots aren't worthy to see daylight, but when you use them all together in situ or in a sequence like you have, it becomes a much better story telling device than even the most ornately planned and 'perfect' images. You're also selling me on the GM5 more and more, but I already have too many cameras 🤣 Great video!
Love my red GM5. First camera I reach for when walking about and quality very decent. I’d argue my copy of my gm1 gives me sharper images for some reason, but usability the gm5 wins. But if I’m out and want “better quality” then it’s Olympus em5miii and pro lenses with 20mp sensor.l and image stabilisation. Each has their own unique feel to them. Although, the sheer price of gm5 nowadays you can probably get better bang for buck.
Good video. Been eying the GM5 but I just picked up a G9 and an ply EM5 MK3 for the smaller carry. It's is so compact and the IBIS is amazing. Watched a lot of your videos in delving into Micro Four Thirds. But FYI the X100V is weather sealed as soon as you add the front adapter and a UV filter. I use it without worry in pouring rain.
My GM5 actually came with a detachable on-camera flash. However, don’t ask me where it is. A built-in flash like on the GM1 or G100 is always with you. Now that I’m on the topic, I think my GH3 has a built-in flash too. 🤔 I’ll check!
I've seen that a few times in the comments! Neither of mine did booo. I mean, I should expect the red one not to but I'm surprised the fancy black one didn't! Aww well I might look into buying a little flash for it ☺️
Yay!! 🎉 I finally own a camera you showcase Emily! I adore my GM5 so much. It is on me all the time with the PL 25 1.4 or 15 1.7. I almost panic bought another but not yet. Thank you for the GM5 love!
Great video. Just spent a week in Sydney, Aus. Didn’t want to carry a heavy camera so threw the Gx1 in my bag with the external EVF and a couple of pancake lenses. Same thing - some average shots, a few bangers, and a bunch of meh. But just a great time. Maybe I’ll get the GM5 at some point, but so expensive secondhand here in NZ. Keep up the good work.
Agree about the price. More than I want to spend for this body. I am on the lookout for a reasonable priced GM5. I hope I find one. A larger small body I love is the GX85/9. It has the EVF I want. The screen flips. There is IBIS.There is the L monochrome and L monochrome D B&W jpegs. Most importantly the prices are reasonable. I found a GX85 with charger for $300 on my birthday. I wasn’t specifically looking for it but I found it. Maybe lightning will strike twice. Definitely a larger body. Was at the local camera store this weekend for it’s extravaganza and purchased a G9ii for 1/2 price! I’m so happy. Good things also come in large boxes. Looking forward to trying the Leica monochrome. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
If it wasn't so expensive I would already have a Lumix GM5 (GAS alarm). But I can wait. In the meantime I'll continue to use my Pentax MX-1 and the Olympus TG-6 for EDC.
Thank you mam. On EVF (electronic view finders). I have one on a Panasonic pocket camera which is too slow to be much use. It is always a chunk of a second behind reality and doesn't cope with panning. To my delight, the second hand Om10 DE II or whatever it is called is very fast to the point of being near real time and highly suited to way of doing photos based on decades of optical SLR/DSLR viewfinders which are in real time. A not very subtle property of viewfinders which has a large effect on the usability of a camera. Anyway - the Om10 DE II or whatever is a decent jump forward for me and joy of joys, the batteries from the PEN (1) will make it work.
Still on the hunt for my first M43 camera and this one is on the short list. Pocketability is really one of the most important features. Do you have any sugestion on stores stores in Japan to look out for some used LUMIX cameras? Thank you so much!
Hi Emily, you have changed me. Although I wasn't a full fram maniac, I did use my ASPC canon 80D with whopper kit lens (18-135) for everything. Because of this, I didn't have an easy carry camera. I recently bought a nifty little 10ish year old Olympus EM5 MK2, and it goes to so many places with me. My camera buddies are shocke and miffed at the amount of photos I am sharing again now. The canon will be saved for dedicated photo outings, and it does perform better with motorsport panning stuff, but the little MFT is absolutely the mutts nutts.
I got my hands on a gx 800 two weeks ago and since that day she ist alway with me - do not count my fotos but it's still an ervery day practice. Got her for 280 EUR roundabout 225 Pounds used in an excellent condition so unbeatable in the price. No EVP - never thought I can go through this but it's works absolutely fine, and gives me surprisingly an knew way of taking photographs because you are noch trapped in your littel tiny square - on the other hand nothing wrong when you have an EVP but you don't need one to take serious photos.
Looks like the new red one came with a Franiec grip -- how do you like it? I personally really like the additional purchase it adds, I think it helps with manipulating the fiddly little buttons one-handed.
Do you paint your own cameras? If so I would love for you to do a tutorial. if not then you could still do a video on how it’s done or who does it in depth. Your cameras are so cool looking. Style is sadly part of the battle when pulling out my older cameras in public.
Very good "long term" review of my long term favourite camera. At those prices I am thinking of selling my other GM5 body as I was able to snatch a mint gx9 a month ago. Funny enough you also have the same aluminium custom grip in the red body that I bought years ago from an American or Canadian chap, so beautiful! For fun I asked what MPB would offer for the GM5 and the answer was: not much : )

And didn’t do it. What an -… -Your self presentation has gotten a professional lift… just like you to know that we spotted it! (But the spontaneity of the old way is irresistible and matches your personality)
My absolute fav camera.. is a 16 year old bridge camera. with a whole 8mp, a 1/2.5" CCD and a 38mm-380mm f3.5-f3.7. to me, it ticks every box, well, most of them, it could do with having RAW, but its JPGs are very flexible (before exif 2.3, aka before the compression happened) and it could have better ISO sensitivity (64-1600) but, I adore it and ive taken OVER 12,000 pics with it, it takes priority over a 700 quid Canon DSLR!!
Not turning this into some infantile brand flame war but E-5Miii/OM-5 are tiny (only a fraction bigger than PEN), are fully weather sealed and for the 999 photos challenge and everyday carry, comes with no compromises. Just saying.
I just can't get rid of my Olympus e-M10 for the same reason! And I fell into the rabbit hole of cheap Chinese fast manual lenses that are somehow still TINY!
I just happened to pick up my GM5 again last week and mounted the 7artisans 18mm f/6.3 on it. It’s so pocketable! But the photos I take just don’t have the same quality as yours. I’d love to know how you push this camera to its limits.
I have the little Olympus ZX-1 in white. Bought it used. Has a fiddly battery compartment, but it shoots awesome macro. It is very pocketable. Also the Ricoh GR. And of course the Pen F. I recently purchased a Fuji Panaromic camera that shoots film, which is bigger, but I wanted to try it. (I sold a Hasselblad XPan film camera a few years ago because my fear is that there wouldn't be enough parts to fix it. One of my favorite cameras of all time). The little white Olympus is a blast to use. Smaller sensor. I had an original Leica D-Lux 4 which had the CCD sensor I loved but sold it many years ago. TIt's the macro on this camera that makes it fun, and the B&W settings. Had the Panasonic Lumix for a hot minute but sold it. Never meshed with me. I've also come to the conclusion that there is not one perfect camera and neither is there a perfect camera bag. LOL! Years ago I owned a Pentax Option which was one of the most smallest P&S cameras. I loved it. I made an Altoid camera case for it. LOL! The sensor on the Pentax went and then it started producing LOMOGRAPHY like colors. I still used it until it just didn't work one day. Also another camera I loved was Canon S90, S95. Even the G9 was nice.
999 photo challenge, yes! While not a pocket combo, I forced myself to take my G9 + Sigma 18-35 on my trip to England last weekend, and I’m so glad that I did. I probably took some of my greatest pictures ever. I totally agree with always going out with a camera, and like you said, even if you don’t have the right lens for each scenario, it will force you to look for different angles.
I've been looking at the Lumix series for awhile now. But when I found out about the Signa 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN and 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS lenses I knew I had to go for a Sony instead. Both have a fixed aperture of 2.8. So even though they're expensive and not very pocketable, they're all I'll ever need. But I could also get some pancake lenses in the mean time for a more pocketable setup, while I save up for these two
Actually, my choice for an every day camera is the Panasonic LUMIX GX7. I think it is a bit overlooked, since the GX8 has weather sealing, and it is not really tiny (but I am a big guy, so the smallest are fiddly to me). It has a tilting viewfinder, which some find gimmicky, but is actually handy for those low held shots in bright light. It has both a built in flash and a hot shoe, and a tilting screen. What it lacks, IMO, is proper battery life. I always bring two spares, but for a full day, even that may be limiting. It is kinda bulky, but in my opinion, the lenses usually make up most of the bulk anyway.
I bought a GM5 like new in the box 6 years ago, and then lost it for 5 years during a move. Thankfully I recently found it and have been playing with it every day like a new toy. I even like the little flash that came with it.
I use the gm5 for every Foto walk.the gx9 and gx8 stay most time at Home. I use the GM 5 with the original aluminium Hand grip from the gm1 .that is a nice Feeling. Its so fun to work with the gm5.also a nice qualiy magnesium boddy.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 A new gm5II with all new specs.i will buy imidiatly. Best regards
I am a big canon fan, that discovered the joy of an everyday pocket camera while buying a GF1 2 Month ago. now I have a GM1 a second GF1 a GF3, and few lenses, all that for less than one of my L serie canon lens price. But I must admit the GM5 is hard to find
I always (well, if it isn´t raining) carry my (now six year old) Sony A6300 with me. Equipped with lense SEL35/1.8 it is quite versatile. BUT: it is chunky! As an EDC i thought about investing in a action camera (one which does not exceed 400 Euro/GBP/Dollar).
The GM5 came with a tiny little flash, didn't it? I have one, and a flash and I'm pretty sure they came together. Cracking camera. Looking forward to using at again after a few years (I lost the charger in a house move, just bought a replacement)..
I have one. The only thing I miss on the camera is a tilting screen. It has become a rarity now. I've only seen one on sale at MPB for the last 4 months (and I visit almost daily). It was gone very quickly.
This might be a big ask but I think there is 1 camera you need to reveiw. The Leica D-Lux 8. It is essentially a Lumix so I think you will be the best person for the job!
Emily, I also love the GM5 and I could only hope Panasonic makes a GM9. That said, the X100V is weather sealed for the most part only missing a filter attach and go- it is. Or one of the conversion lenses. So to say it’s not weather sealed is not exactly accurate. The X100VI also has IBIS.
Neither are weather sealed without the additonal kit. I know the x100vi has ibis, I reviewed it recently. My point was arguably the most popular everyday carry camera of all time, the x100v, is much larger, much more expensive camera and has the same flaws.
@ I agree as I mentioned myself you don’t have it weather sealed out of the box. But it’s not entirely right to say it’s just not weather sealed. The kit didn’t much more if we are talking about filters. Particularly third party. Anyhow. I can only hope Panasonic listens to you and do a gm5 successor. For sure that camera is a jewel
My GM5 stopped working a couple of years ago and was overjoyed that my favorite camera store had a repair person on tap who fixed it with a new motherboard for a little over a $100. I put a little stick on rubber wedge for a fingertip grip, not the swoopy one you have.
Interesting camera. But with that lens it might not fit in all pockets, but I see you got hiking trousers/pants so likely big pockets, and as you said jacket, I got massive pockets in my jacket, so it would work. But for tiny camera, something different or a smaller lens might be good.I'm not sure what to get yet. I got a full frame camera yet, which I always bring in a backpack, unless it's dark and I know I won't shoot anything. But a small camera would come in handy on mountain bike rides when it's a group ride and I can't stop too long, or something happens fast, and being better than a smart phone.
This vid came in clutch. I've been scrolling the webs for new gear (lenses) cause I need some inspo. I ended up shelving my Nikon Zf, and Lumix GX85, and pulled out an old gramps, a Nikon D800. Paired it with a vintage 28mm, all manual lens, and took that dinosaur outside. I might take you up on that 999 challenge. But instead of a tiny setup, I'll be walking around with brick lol. I need to get away from the fancy tech for a bit.
Guess I made a good deal when I got my GM5 used some years ago then. I don't think I spent more than the equivalent of £250 including the 25-F1.7 and some other accessories.
One of the things I try to challenge myself with is using a camera that doesn't have IBIS. While it is a brilliant feature to have in cameras, it is something you can get incredibly comfortable with to the point you don't realise how much you miss it in certain cameras.
I'm surprised the GM5 you got in Japan didn't have the tiny flash that came with it. If you really want one there's lots on the bay at fairly reasonable prices. I used mine (before I sold it) at a friends charity gig and the video it produced was every bit as good as the GH3 I had at the time, infact, the onboard audio was better imo :)
Holy **** these are expensive in todays market!?!? I bought a GM1 2 years ago for about 140 usd. With the 12-32 kit lens. And the camera had 265 shutter counts!?!? 😮 It's in absolute mint condition. My precious! 🥰
I got three bodies of Yi M1 with the latest firmware (3.2 int) that cost me around USD 75 each (body only). Its weight is just like GM5 at 280 gram. If you shoot raw, with the latest firmware, and optionally but highly recommended calibrate the color using color checker card if you have one, the result is just as good if not better than my GX85 especially for skin tones. All those horrendous reviews of this camera with the initial firmware does not apply anymore with the latest firmware. If you can get your hands on it on the cheap I suggest to give it a try. The 20MP Sony IMX269 sensor in a body that was 'inspired' by Leica T that was designed by Audi, and won the 2017 reddot award itself, will give you a pleasant surprise.
I see the GF7 has a popup flash. There's a whole series of these, most much cheaper than the GM1 or 5 - ah i see you link to another video at the end there about exactly that 👍🏼
The problem nowadays is that the actual price is not what you show, is way more expensive (mainly because videos like this one in the last year or so). That said, I prefer my GX800 at 150€, the GM-5 at 400€ doesn't make better photos 😂
What about the Olympus TG series. I have the tg5. Totally weather proof shock proof you name it proof. It is a fixed lens but a decent zoom. That’s my everyday carry
Challenge accepted! My New to me LUMIX G85 is waiting for delivery of a new to me Olympus 8-25mm f4 Pro lens from mpb. Why this combo? I want a small, weatherproof travel camera that will cover my most used focal lengths in a compact package. So the 999 photo/video challenge is a brilliant opportunity to dive in to a brand new camera/lens experience! True m43nerdy fun😊
Not terrible! I thinkkk it worked out as £360 after the tax relief. Incredible given it was pristine! Just the pesky problem of it being in Japanese but I fixed it when I got home 😁
If I was going to spend $1000 for a GM5, I would rather shell out the extra $300 and get a penF. My everyday carry right now is the Olympus EP5 paired with a 17 mm F2.8.
Nice little camera but bloody expensive AF, I mean you can get a GH5 or a G9 for cheaper. Sure it's more compact but I'm sure there are similar sized Panasonic which are more feature rich and cheaper.
Yes it's a bit eye watering isn't it! It's such a shame they're becoming more rare to find. Thankfully Lumix have some other smaller cameras that are quite similar and much cheaper, like the Gx800, GF7, etc
Stop it. We aren't here to sell out the Ricoh. Let's just listen nicely to the micro four-thirds people. I'm sure their cameras are just as nice as ours.
Thanks for having me on the channel AND for trusting me with your beloved GM5! 😁
Any time! Glad you enjoyed it, and your boobie-camera b-roll made me HOOT. almost made it the thumbnail 😂

Not turning this into some infantile brand flame war but E-5Miii/OM-5 are tiny (only a fraction bigger than PEN), are fully weather sealed and for the 999 photos challenge and everyday carry, comes with no compromises. Just saying.
stunning gallery
Finally, LX15! I absolutely love my LX15! 🤩
It's a beaut!
I bought a GM5 like new in the box 6 years ago, and then lost it for 5 years during a move. Thankfully I recently found it and have been playing with it every day like a new toy. I even like the little flash that came with it.
The flash also fits on the GX8.
@@tobiasdavid3096 I would imagine it fits many camera's, it has its own on/off power switch.
Nice video. As someone who is actively looking at getting a small (tiny) camera, this was very interesting...😊
I use the gm5 for every Foto walk.the gx9 and gx8 stay most time at Home.
I use the GM 5 with the original aluminium Hand grip from the gm1 .that is a nice Feeling.
Its so fun to work with the gm5.also a nice qualiy magnesium boddy.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
A new gm5II with all new specs.i will buy imidiatly.
Best regards
Such a great video!! Also Emily x Becca collab sometime???
I am a big canon fan, that discovered the joy of an everyday pocket camera while buying a GF1 2 Month ago. now I have a GM1 a second GF1 a GF3, and few lenses, all that for less than one of my L serie canon lens price. But I must admit the GM5 is hard to find
Although the GM5 is very cute, I'll stick with my GX85, which is essentially "pocketable" with its 12-32 lens.
I'm curious, did you or Tom edit his segment? I feel like your editing styles are very compatible.
I did 😊
This might be a big ask but I think there is 1 camera you need to reveiw.
Smashed it out of the park with this one AND a bonus Tom cameo. What's not to love?
Interesting camera. But with that lens it might not fit in all pockets, but I see you got hiking trousers/pants so likely big pockets, and as you said jacket, I got massive pockets in my jacket, so it would work. But for tiny camera, something different or a smaller lens might be good.I'm not sure what to get yet. I got a full frame camera yet, which I always bring in a backpack, unless it's dark and I know I won't shoot anything.
But a small camera would come in handy on mountain bike rides when it's a group ride and I can't stop too long, or something happens fast, and being better than a smart phone.
Great video as usual, and a great little camera…………….. and with this, there go the prices. 😂
Your photos are incredible. Low key want to go back to m43
Very good deal 👀 oooooof!
That thumbnail with you looking lovingly. 😂 ❤❤
😂 i couldn't resist
One of the things I try to challenge myself with is using a camera that doesn't have IBIS. While it is a brilliant feature to have in cameras, it is something you can get incredibly comfortable with to the point you don't realise how much you miss it in certain cameras.
I was given a smart phone, amazing pics these do now!
Literally the best camera ever IMO! Paired with the 20mm. So sad mine broke. Wish they made it again.
I love Tom
Still trying to get a GM1 or 5. Hesitated an eBay GM1 at £299 Sunday night and it was gone Monday morning. grrr.
Oooo! Hopefully more will pop up that's not a bad price at all 🤞🤞🤞🤞
I got my GM5 bundled with a very tiny flash DMW-FL70 😎
I need a tiny flash for mine I'll have to check that out!
I need a tiny flash for mine I'll have to check that out!
What about the Olympus TG series. I have the tg5. Totally weather proof shock proof you name it proof. It is a fixed lens but a decent zoom. That’s my everyday carry
I reviewed one quite recently in Greece! It's such a great EDC 😁

For me it does seem a bit pricy in addition to the 17.5mm eye point and smaller/older evf.
How much was your GM5 in Japan?
Not terrible! I thinkkk it worked out as £360 after the tax relief. Incredible given it was pristine! Just the pesky problem of it being in Japanese but I fixed it when I got home 😁
@@MicroFourNerdsDid you mess with the firmware to add English to the menu?
I'm only watching once you've reached 1000 shots on this camera!
I hope someone sends you an ep7 eventually 🙏
Pany should make a S9 with a viewfinder, like the pair of gm1 and gm5
GM1 doesn’t have a viewfinder. GM5 does.
@@ImageMaven Yes! Correct
Pew Pew Pew!
Challenge accepted with my DJI Mini 4. :-)
Rare as hen's teeth.....not costing a small fortune....like to get one...
The x100v does not have WR or IBIS but the x100vi does kinda strange you did not mention that
It doesn't have weather sealing either. you need an additional kit to weather seal the x100 cameras.
Thank you for the vid. However it is so annoying to create this artificial hype about some “random” camera just to increase prices.
I got it as my first real camera in February and took my first 20 to 20k photos on it before the back lcd failed.
Laugh that lil bugger
£500!!
It’s hardly a everyday camera price.
Sub £100 might be nearer the mark.
Or even dare I say Film 👍
Yes it's a bit eye watering isn't it! It's such a shame they're becoming more rare to find. Thankfully Lumix have some other smaller cameras that are quite similar and much cheaper, like the Gx800, GF7, etc
Hi, I’m watching your vlog now! Looking forward to seeing how the photos turned out! Please can you vote and comment on my post?
Cough … Ricoh GR3…..cough….
Stop it. We aren't here to sell out the Ricoh. Let's just listen nicely to the micro four-thirds people. I'm sure their cameras are just as nice as ours.
