Holy shit. I've just been watching all your birthday episodes because I discovered you guys like a week ago and this is already my favorite film podcast on youtube. You guys rule. Happy birthday Evan!
In the first matrix and Constantine, one actor plays under the name Keanu Reeves, and in John Wick, under the same name, Keanu Reeves is played by another actor, he is his understudy both in the movies and in real life for almost 30 years (just like Tom Cruise's understudies) . They've been bullying their fans like this for 25 years. In the last matrix, they both played under the same name Keanu Reeves in different episodes. Programmers, run this through a special face recognition program and see for yourself.
The first two 1999 movies that popped up in my mind were ''Bringing Out the Dead'' & ''Election'', I hope the other two movies are ''Ravenous'' & ''Office Space''.
That fan art is blowing my mind!! If that was on your website for sale, I would have bought it already.🔥🔥🔥 When are y'all jabronies gonna to get some merch??!!

I could write 1000 words on The Matrix easily but briefly stated, it is an incredibly important cultural marker for me, and I would argue for the world. It didn't cause the culture to change but it did mark it. In fact I kinda think it was one part of the LAST major cultural shift. Yes there was once a time when not only did not everyone live on the computer but not everyone even had a computer. Then one day everyone thought that the future was sexy, and that you could have your leisure time, your sex life and your career all in the Matrix- I mean, the internets. I was in San Francisco, the center of internet venture capital. We were the rock and roll/art people and the computer people had been invading for a while, driving us nuts and depressing us. After 1999, the computer people had won, it was over. Tom might remember "Foreign Cinema" this douche barn that opened up in the heart of the wonderfully scuzzy Mission. Somebody decided you had to wear all black when you went there so every dot-com jagoff was in there in all black in a horrible Matrix party. We would NEVER go in there... the rock bar was 12 Galaxies across the street. We went to see Matrix in the theater expecting some fun John Woo style fare. In the audience were repeat viewers Rocky-Horroring the movie and waving their hands in the air like it was a rave. (true) We thought it was fun but stupid. Then we found out that weirdly, even the rock and roll people liked Matrix! Like Evan I also did not know one person who disliked it! Or maybe, three who were meh on it. But I didn't think it was a good thing. To me this is the movie that no one questions, everyone speaks about it as if it accomplished what it set out to do and maybe it did since it ate the universe, but it didn't create cinematic coherence in my view. Anyway, I'm not saying it's a totally bad thing that we're living in the internet-miasma culture now and forever, or that there is no more underground-- just that it was a violent shift, insane to witness, as big as Elvis or the Beatles, just much, much shittier.
what a great gift and painting. This would make a great t-shirt! The Matrix i would say is the last of the 90s big cultural movies of the 90s and even going into the 2000s. What other film do you remember which organically had a big impact on everything upon its release. Even it's home video releases is the last big one with both the snapper and tin foil VHS release. GREAT PULL on Shadowrun i still have that on my SEGA I even bought a replica of the phone. Matrix pulled SO many references into creating something which Gen Pop were not fully aware of. After this movie, everyone turned into a connoisseur of hacking, hong kong flicks, scifi concepts, philosophy, cyberpunk, Anime. Speaking of Anime, I am of the few that enjoy the sequels as these films are live action animes. Those cyberpunk films, like Ghost in the Shell, are so heady and heavy with concepts mixing spiritualism, technology, existentialism, all that other nonsense. Speaking of pulls, aside from Terminator, this film shares similarities to two other Schwarzenegger films: Total Recall and Last Action Hero which, either of those, would be great for an OFH treatment. Considering you guys are focusing on 1999, a good follow up with this episode perhaps for patreon is a talk on The Thirteenth Floor which shares a lot of similarities
One thing I always hated about "The Matrix" was all the fighting. If you had the power of Neo, you could make the matrix blind to you, and you wouldn't have to dodge bullets. It would be so much easier to blind the Matrix than to dodge bullets.
One thing that bugged me about the movie was that it seemed to say "the world we live in is an illusion." but then followed it up with "the thing to do is to get the high score in the illusion." not to dispel the illusion but to play by its rules. It smacks of half-assed rebellion.
Saw it in the theater, HUGE when I was a kid. Really doesn't hold up today. Last time I watched it it really struck me how 90% of the dialog is just exposition, Can really see the seams of the screenplay trying to sell this sci-fi concept to general audiences. in 1999 a lot of people still didn't even have internet in their homes yet.
It's funny, I hear what everyone is saying about "cringey but cool" for the time. But I still dig this movie with no reservation. I'm not a movie nerd, but have always been a big movie fan, and when this came out I was firmly in my 2-3 new movies a week mode. I think of this movie as very much of its time and full of interesting ideas that us people who were NOT comic book, or video game nerds saw as brand new and, dare I say, "cutting edge" (I know, barf). It was kinda rare for a fairly big budget Hollywood movie to be so unique and auteur driven, seemingly without much studio interference. I bet Warner Bros didn't REALLY know what they had. I'd bet Joel Silver championed the Wachowsky's vision, and he was so successful at the time, the studio simply trusted him and crossed their fingers.
@@OneFuckingHour Haha! It's funny, as dedicated as Keanu (and Lawrence) became to the kung fu training for months, the fights don't really have the snap of the Hong Kong films they're borrowing from. Nobody is REALLY quite fast enough or graceful enough to sell it 100%. Admirable, but not quite there. But, I guess most audiences didn't read it that way, because the Kung Fu aspect was very popular, and part of what made it unique.

But the actual massacre shooting happened in April of 1999, and the movie was released in June of '99. And again, crazy, later on Evan mentioned the school shootings and even Columbine.....
The office worker that has a bigger purpose reminds me a lot of the original script for Total Recall They changed it to Quaid being a construction worker to fit Arnold’s appearance better Also in Total Recall, the red pill shows up , I think the Matrix got the red pill idea directly from TR
@OneFuckingHour Quick question: where did you get a copy of the 35mm film scan at the beginning of the intro? Is there a feature-length copy of the entire Matrix 35mm (1999) online?
God, crap like Hackers and The Matrix aged like milk! The Animatrix remains watchable but it's a toss-up - honestly what would be more embarrassing? Your nearest and dearest catching you masturbating, or watching The Matrix? I'd be more embarrassed about being caught watching The Matrix because it's wank.
Cypher: No. I don't believe it. Tank: Believe it or not, you piece of sh*t, you're still gonna burn. (Spits) Horrible lol. I couldn’t even understand what Tank said until now.
I tossed my Matrix snapper DVD--a gift from a friend who evangelized the film--when I bought the big set in the clear case with the bust of Neo on sale as Media Play was going out of business. I still have that one on my DVD shelf with all three films, Animatrix, and other supplemental materials. I still haven't seen the most recent sequel. I will sometime. But how will I ever stick it into that case with its orderly trays?
@@OneFuckingHour In college Media Play became my place. Between classes I'd slip over there a few times a week to browse. My friends went nearly every weekend. I bought stacks of CDs and DVDs.
