I went to see the production at Harold Pinter Theatre last week, and I have to say that I thought it was perfect. Some of the best acting I’ve ever seen on stage, Norton is truly one of the most impressive actors of this generation. I was also blown away by Luke Thompson - I absolutely fell in love with his Willem. The two of them stole my heart and completely broke it, I can’t recommend the play highly enough❤
Thank you so much for this content. Millions of readers all over the world have been waiting for this moment to come. Jude´s emotional collapse at the end of the book will stay with me until my final day on Earth
i will not say anything about whether the actors accurately visually represent the characters in the book🤐🤐🤐 but James' voice honestly fits Jude really well, i love it.
Yes, Norton certainly doesn't fit the visual description of Jude in the book as Jude is described as 'ethnically ambigious' nearly 6ft 2, 'beautiful' and preternaturally thin. I think there are covert textual references to Jude being part Native American. What Norton does, however, is convey via his voice, tone and demeanour Jude's fear, vulnerability and sorrow. Just one or two moments of over exuberance (he sounds celebratory even) when delivering some quite devastating lines that deserve more introspective quietness.
@@Journalistwoman would you elaborate which moments you are refering to? i went to see that play last week and for the first half, i couldnt digest the characters as they were written in book; my mind was stuck on james as xyz character, luke as the bridgeton boy etc. The second half, however, was phenomenal
@@nehasultan409 I don't quite understand your question - sorry. You felt that the actors during the performance did not convey even an essence of the novel's characterization? Aesthetically Norton and Luke Thompson certainly don't adhere to how they are minutely described by the author. I've written quite a few comments on this so don't want to repeat it (as above). I haven't watched Bridgerton, I was at the stage performance of Hamlet and Luke was part of the cast. I think I understand about Norton being entrenched in TV roles and those roles linger about the actor? Is that what you mean? Any really good RADA trained actor should come to a new role as a 'blank sheet' so to speak. I felt though Norton is physically miscast as Jude but as anactor he possesses emotional intelligence and sensitivity which he brings to the fore of his Jude characterization apart from some lines, for example "the best thing about being an adult is not having sex". This (in both book and play) is a devastating line at the epicentre of Jude's trauma and the text's whole (awful thematically) dynamic/motivation, yet Norton delivered it like he just won a prize at a jamboree! I saw the second performance at The Pinter, maybe he doesn't do that anymore. Other examples are his (and this is the script perhaps) curt one word answers which sound (confidently) dismissive rather than imbued with self-shame, doubt and fear etc. Sorry for the lengthy reply.
I can’t put into words how excited I am for this play. Being able to be there for it in person would be a dream come true but unfortunately that’s not possible for me. However I really hope for a professional recording of it at least:‘) I first read this book in 2019 and even back then it was talked about everywhere on the internet, at least that’s what it felt like for me, but that’s not to be compared how popular it is today, years later. It’s so cool to see how this book seemingly just keeps getting bigger and bigger. That just proves how much of an impact it has on people, as it had on me. The cast seem honestly perfect to play these characters, I can’t wait to see what they make of it, I’m sure they will do them justice.
Totally agree with Zach and Emilio. I saw the play last week, sitting on stage, and it was crazy watching the audience reactions; seeing them cry. I felt like I was part of the play - it was truly amazing.
I've seen the play and I still think Norton should be Willem (well aesthetically) although I understand that as Willem he would be playing himself perhaps: tall, 'handsome', affable, sweet (mostly) kind person etc - based upon Willem's character. I had a thought, imagine Norton and Luke Thompson alternating the roles, but perhaps that would be too confusing, too demanding of the actors in such a lengthy (timewise) and emotionally/physically demanding production.
Can u aploud this play after ending selling tickets and after it fnishes ?... i really like to watch it but i can't go there , and i'm sure so many people are like me .
Okay soo I eventually did get the chance to see the recorded version at a cinema in my city which is still crazy to me omg but anywayss, I saw it twice now, the second time was today🥹. And that play wrecked me fr. The cast completely threw me away, I thought they all did an amazing job as did the crew with everything, so the whole production of it was just incredible imo. Especially James I gotta say, is in my head a superhuman or smth. I don’t know how he played such a tough character, night after night, not ever leaving the stage for 3 1/2 hrs, and still smashing his performance. And he really did smash it..i honestly so appreciate him seemingly putting everything he’s got into this role bc it definitely paid off in the end. I can’t imagine anyone better for Jude. So thank you James you are beyond talented and I love you so much. And other than that that play was definitely much more graphic than I’d thought it would be lol…so that was a surprise for me. And after it was over it really did not leave my mind even days after. And today I was crying about it a lot. Soo yeah I do think it does something to you but that just even further proves to me what an amazing piece of art a little life really is. This experience, seeing the play was really something special for me and I’ll forever cherish it. I’m so grateful for every single one of these people responsible for making something so magnificent and unique❤️🙏🏼 🥹I’ll never get over this
Yes I do and I thought the same. Watching the actors Norton is so composed and confident (public school type) and Luke is less comfortable in his own skin - a little twitchy even and slightly agitated. Yet sometimes quiter introspective people can appear to be very still in that they don't want to draw attention to their bodies/mannerisms. All very dichotomous. But I still think, as I have written below, that Norton should be Willem.
@@laurennobody511 Yes as described in the novel because Willem is of Scandinavian origin (not always blond I realise but Willem is) and Jude is of 'unknown origins' yet perhaps part Native American (some covert pointers in the text, perhaps). Interestingly in the London play script they miss out JB's 'post-racial' during his assessment of Jude The Postman. I wonder if this is due to the casting or it may have been written in the script prior to Norton asking for the role?
Please please please give us a chance to watch this online!! There are so many people who love this book but couldn’t make it to the show. For those who are very unfortunate, would you guys release this online, please?
For the people who have seen the play, I've a question: How were the parts of Jude being a child integrated in the play? Cause the interactions with Brother luke and dr Traylor happened when he was a child, I'm just curious. And also, how was Julia's absence justified? I know that even in the book she's more of a background character but still, Jude had 2 parents who adopted him, not just a single father. Thank you in advance ❤
this is a very late answer but if you still want to know, it’s ‘Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen’ by Mahler (based on a poem by Rückert)! Translated the title kind of means ‘I have been/become lost to the world’.
Don’t understand, will never understand and I’m happy I don’t people who thinks this book is good, the story is horrible. It’s a bad book, a sad porn story that destined to manipulate all who reads it. I found it shallow and with no emotion, just for pure shock value.
I agree that it's overhyped. Beautiful writing but the story absolutely is torture porn. The way Jude's disability is portrayed is especially jarring to me
I literally can't wait to see my favourite book coming into action...only if i were i older enough to switch countries as i literally live in South East side of the world ..one day i would love to see this becoming into a full series were we can access it 🤍
"I hope he likes me" LMAO. He was wearing Jude's part since day one.
I just know, with Zubin's voice, Harold is gonna break me at the end with his monologue.
He broke me for sure, Zubin was incredible as Harold.
Did it break you guys? I'd give years of my life to see this play
can't believe i've payed good money to travel to London alone so i can cry for four hours. (i also can't wait!!)
Hahaha same.
Same! 😂
I wish I had the possibility to do the same
Love that!! I live in Argentina so it's impossible 😭😭😭

Please, please release a full video of the play. I need to watch it, but I'm not able to travel. Please, please, please. 🙏🏽
Bro JBs actor is THE EXACT way i thought of him. Amazing.
For me, the four of them look perfect. They are exactly how I thought the four would be.

Does anybody think that Jude and Willem characters should be switched? James has this composed state that is not reflected to Jude’s character.
I thought Willem would be blonde and Jude dark haired.
I think so too! I’ve always pictured Willen to look like Andrew Vanwyngarden. Still, I’m sure their acting is amazing nonetheless
