$19.99 in the States is all she's worth not a dollar more. I love a Midge but everyone deserves to have her easily and readily available. I also hate the fact that Mattel put "rare find" on the box, it's just gross to use the same wording as the resellers. Especially because Mattel knows how the market is right now.

for real, its very scummy. Since i have to buy dolls from a secondary seller to get them in the Philippines, the mark up for them is so high. The deluxe style #2 doll costs ₱2200 so around $38 and the midge variant costs ₱3100 so around $53. wow i love this so much! 🥰😭

It’s a sad situation all around.. Mattel knows exactly what they are doing. And at this point some of these scalpers have got to be doll collectors… or they are telling their friends or family to help them scalp. It’s crazy how we can’t escape them no matter what doll brand we collect. They are everywhere.

    • @h_stefany88
      @h_stefany88 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Yeah I know a collector that is also a scalper. Every thing he buys, he gets 1 or 2 more, so when he re-sells the extra, the money he paid in the doll he got for his own collection comes back with a bonus.

  • @sherrimakesstuff3112

This is such an important discussion. I'm an old doll collector, and the forced rarity market is always a shady move by companies, in my opinion. Also, snapping up playline dolls just to resell is disgusting and predatory. As someone else here said, now there's a little girl out there who can't get that doll as it's been taken out of circulation. When I was a teenager in the 80s and started collecting I always gravitated to the Midge, Christie, and Teresa dolls because they were so much more interesting to me than yet another blonde Barbie. I can't help but think that now there is another young Barbie lover out there who doesn't have that opportunity because of these resellers. I'm not mad about resellers in general, but buying all of them from a store just for resale is greedy, in my opinion. Some people have no integrity.
They did the same thing with the Barbie the Movie dolls in 2023. Now, no one cares about them anymore and prices are starting to come down. What I've learned as a collector is that you have to play the long game in situations like this. These are mass-produced items. Even the "rare" ones. I'm disappointed that I won't have one in my collection right away, but hopefully I will bump into one at a good price down the line. As a collector, I can deal with that delayed gratification.
As a TH-camr, however, that leaves me in the lurch. Like you, I refuse to just jump on trends to feed the algorithm, but then that leaves me with only my mom watching my videos - lol.
Keep your chin up, and don't let the grifters and the slaves to the algorithm get you down. This video tells me that your content is worth seeking out because your collection means something to you - that personal touch is still important on here. Thanks for taking the time to say what's been on my mind.

I've been collecting since the 90s myself, and I am also always way more interested in Barbie's friends than Barbie herself. You're 100% correct, these are mass produced items, and frankly I don't get the need to have each new doll right away, but it makes sense that people are trying to get views on their channels by having the latest/greatest doll as soon as it's released. I just plug along and make content that I would want to watch and if other people want to watch too, that's great LOL

It happened this here in my country (Brazil) but with fashionistas a couple of years ago. For some reasons, someone decided particular Black fashionistas were "rare", and yes, some of these were a bit harder to find in stores. Then, we had scalpers buying all they could find and reselling them online for double, sometimes 3x the price, with a huge "RARE" tag in their ads.
And then we saw stories of collectors saying "I love black dolls, but I can't find them anywhere/ I saw someone selling it, but it was super expensive", or "I wanted to gift that doll to my child, but I could never find it in stores and the online prices are ridiculous".
There are what I call "trendy today" dolls. Dolls that become trend in social medias and everybody is crazy about, but when the hype is over, they drop the price and most of the people that bought on a impulse during FOMO - just because they saw everybody getting it - finally saw they never liked the doll in first place and can't understand why they got it lol Sometimes said dolls can be found even on mtm body and super cheap. This is what happened with the Ariel live action dolls, Barbie the Movie, the redhead Holiday Odile, all BMR1959 (specially the pale Ken doll with a bun and the other one with green hair), Jurassic World Owen Ken doll, Wonder Woman and Mera dolls, among others (now we can hardly see anybody posting photos these dolls online).

I feel this about the scalpers. Best way to beat them is to just not pay these prices.
I'm glad this seemed to happen with some of the Bratz x Mean Girls dolls. Some couple months passed and you can get some of them for almost retail now cuz (except for Cady, she's still insane but also going down). I guess the scalpers cant get rid of them fast enough xD I ordered one and the freaking scalper reached out to ME asking me if I want more, cuz they have many xDD What I took from this is that these scalpers need to sell their wares fast in order to make buck since most of them are doing this as a side gig. If you wait for a bit, the whole gig isnt profitable for most of them. So if we just sit it out as a community, releases will be less interesting to scalpers CUZ THEY WILL KNOW WE WONT PAY THIS AMOUNT.
I notice that many of these scalpers also scalp sneakers/merch/etc, so I assume theres networks for people like this, telling eachother whats "hot" on socmed now. I love the dollcommunity, but sadly they also attract these people. : /

What we can do about it is to refuse to pay the artificially high prices on eBay. Sure, there's FOMO, and this doll obviously resonates with a lot of collectors. She's pretty but is she really worth $199? What if you wait to see if they become more plentiful in Target? What if you wait to see if the secondary market price becomes more reasonable as the grifters find themselves stuck with extra dolls? And if you absolutely, positively will die without getting one, then buy it for many times over the inflated secondary market price. But don't complain about the speculators.

Im glad you said these things... I actually gave up on trying to get " the newest release dolls" and while it was hard at 1st, I dont buy these dolls from secondary markets. Because whether it's a scalper, reseller, collector, opportunist etc. I dont care anymore, they are all the same to me. If I can't purchase the doll at MSRP or on sale, if I have to "treasure hunt" its not worth my time anymore. It was making my hobby less fun. I want to enjoy my hobby. Not be exploited. Im glad people are excited about dolls and im glad new dolls are being made. Im just not going to get all upset anymore about these "hard to find/hard to obtain" dolls. I'll spend my money on things I can obtain and enjoy. I'll enjoy the dolls I have now.

    • @Bethany-v7h
      @Bethany-v7h หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The only reason I buy on the secondary market is to get discontinued dolls. Sometimes the doll's value on the secondary market decreases over time. I remember when the Silkstone Midge was first on eBay. People were asking well over $100 for a doll that retailed for $50. The prices now, however, seem to have settled around $80 or so. More often, the secondary market price can increase dramatically. Look at the Wave 1 Looks dolls. The males can sell for over $100 each and the #1 Looks Lina and #6 Victoria dolls are also approaching $100 each. There is a real demand for these dolls, especially among customizers, which is how I play with my dolls. I get them when I find a low price because they might be more expensive in a few months.

I think if people want to waste their money, fine, but it doesn’t help anyone, when they start telling other people to do it also 😢. So I’m not following her anymore. Buying dolls just to sell later for way more than they are worth, is wrong. I would love to have her, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to. You’re so right about everything you stated in this video. I have been feeling the same way. It’s ridiculous that Mattel plays tose stupid games with us. Bratz didn’t again twice with Karol G doll. I was on the their website in queue to check out, not even 3 minutes from launching when it got sold out because people were able to buy more than two or more (in eBay some have up to 10 to sell)….not fair that now I need to negotiate with them for double the price that she was sold. The worse part is that many who bought her don’t even know who she is…. I’m from Colombia, the same country she’s from…sorry, I’m venting because I’m so frustrated with the whole thing from the minute her doll was launched.

I really appreciate your perspective. You are right. We are being manipulated by our FOMO and greed. I am resisting this release but to be honest I have been scammed more than once trying to obtain an elusive doll. For me it was the Stevie Nicks doll which I was scammed for at least twice. Finally I relented and paid an exorbitant price only to see her return again at half that price. I was played like a puppet and it is not a nice feeling.

I totally agree with you! I don't know what the "answer" is here. Mattel likes to play games, and the secondary market can be a tricky game as well. The "hunt and seize" is a huge part of collecting, so it IS disheartening to continually see new releases unavailable, while others are posting pics of their shopping carts full of the same doll, etc. Personally, I sincerely doubt if the intent is to customize THAT MANY dolls, or do you really have THAT MANY friends or nieces, etc. to buy for? I get it if you have a selling site that you'll want to make a profit, but $100.+ profit?? That's just blatant price gouging! And yes, those that are willing to pay that much mark-up are definitely part of the problem, as we all know the longer those sellers feel "stuck" with those dolls they WILL start reducing the price and perhaps think twice the next time and not hoard so many - in turn - leaving more available in the stores. This is true with many products.

I totally agree with you! I am disgusted with the scalpers and refuse to pay crazy money for a plastic doll! ! can understand if someone is having a hard time and needs to feed their family and are reselling things but not at crazy prices. I really wanted the mean girls collection but that was a really rotten thing for mga to do! They got everyone all excited then teased them about it if people were not able to get one. I really love the older Barbies because i feel they are so much better quality. So i like buying old dolls and cleaning them up. The ones with the high quality clothing.I like the velvet gowns and sophisticated outfits. This was such an important topic about scalpers taking the Joy out of collecting. I bought the blonde deluxe barbie and when i saw there was a red head Midge i really wanted her. The older Midge dolls are too expensive also, so i thought it was nice to see they came out with one for just $20.00 but i won't spend more than $ 20.00 to $30.00 for her. If we do it just encourages the scalpers and i DO NOT understand why people don't understand that and why they contine to pay them outrageous amounts of money , then think they will stop doing it! It is very sad that collecting something we love has turned into a sick game.😔Where i live , we don't even have a Target and i doubt i will find her on their website. Same her. I love to collect and clean pre-loved Barbies. Most of the times, they end up looking brand new. Once I got a Steffie doll from 1992 in great condition. It was one of those manufactured in Brazil by a brand called "Estrela", when they are Mattel had a partnership in the 80s-90s, so Estrela could produce Barbie dolls in Brazil with the approval of Mattel. Some of these dolls are just like the ones released in the US, but some of them are exclusive, and it's the case of the one I got. I was amazed because she was in such good condition. She looks just like the Midge dolls from late 80's, even has the red hair and freckles.
The young woman that sold it to me, also put a letter with the doll, explaining that doll belonged to her aunt in the 90s, and then was passed to her when she was a little girl in the 2000's, and she played a lot with that doll, but took good care of it. I even glued that letter on a sketchbook of mine. I like to imagine the stories behind each one of those pre-loved beauties, specially when I know they were loved by a child.

I agree 100% with you. I’m not going to chase it, if my local Target has it I’ll purchase one . Mattel knew what they were doing causing a scalpers dream, I won’t participate. I’ve seen collectors in the FB groups purchasing two knowing that’s all the store got, and it does my collector heart good seeing others shaming them “buy one leave the other unless someone asked you to purchase”. It’s our fault for falling for this every time Mattel, and other toy companies do it.

Scalpers make me want to scream. I will never understand the greed mindset that would lead someone to waste a day driving around and buying up all of the "rare find" dolls (or any other toy, like the people that did this with Beanie Babies back in the day) and then put them on eBay at a ridiculous price. I feel like this happened with Monster High and with the first Barbie The Movie dolls (the "Perfect Day" Barbie when she first came out) too. But you're 100% correct, if no one bought from the scalpers, they would stop! So I guess it's the fault of someone who panics and "needs" to be one of the first to have a doll. I would rather fix up thrifted dolls and etc. than spend 10x what a playline doll is worth, even if she is cute, like this "Midge." Happy New Year 2025🎉🎉🎉🎉
    1. 2024: The year of the Scalper
I do feel that scalpers have seen how our community consistently buys new items. So they have taken advantage of grabbing up either the rare items/ items we’re excited for as a whole. I admit it dampened the fun of collecting for me. I refuse to buy from scalpers.
I focus on other dolls and customize them to the ones that are in demand. It’s brought me joy and helped me explore my creativity in the DIY part of the doll community.
    2. The Sameness in Presentation-
There are so many great doll collectors across all social media I just rotate and focus on various doll content topics. Instead of constantly focusing on new launches.
I hope some collectors won’t focus on the FOMO aspect of doll collecting but the creativity and the reason why they love 💕 their collections
    3. Doll News- 📰 has been great 😊 getting various opinions on doll news is fun
    4. This year I’m focusing on finding doll collectors who are great at doing doll hacks. From how to take care of your dolls, organize, customize, etc

7:48 no only people paying scalper prices but making their profit out of the situation too when they ask for just as much. Somitimes I get the feeling that it’s a thing to buy limited dolls double and then sell one for double the price. Free doll if it works. Personally I dislike collectors who do that probably more than scalpers who do that for business while the other group profits from this too but wiould always come up with justifying it. I really have a problem with hypocrisy btw
I‘m lucky that those trends or whatever rather turn me off too and it feels so stressful when one posts something and all go running to complain about how bad the doll is in the end.
I struggle when there is a limited or lower stock doll that is already pricy because the pressure that she will be a lot more expensive if I don’t get her immediately or when I missed one or thought ok I don’t have the money just now I‘ll wait. To this point I didn’t buy a doll from those people. No doll is worth that much and also I get so negative feelings and it won’t go into my brain why I should give them money for being a nasty person. I do struggle with consumerism though in several terms, just to point out I don’t think I‘m better and I really try not to bother about the issue you‘re talking about because at the end of the day it’s not worth it.

Exactly. I knew a collector that always did this, every doll he got x2. One for his collection, the other one to sell at scalper prices (most of the time he would dismember the doll and sell pieces of it - head, body, accessory, posing stand - if available - clothes and even the empty box LOL), basically he recovered all the money invested and with a bonus. So, free doll for his collection + a little extra money. Rinse and repeat.

I try to make content based on dolls I actually care about and finding about old doll lines or older dolls in general can be fun there's a lot of dolls out there to the point that new releases don't even hold a candle to the most interesting older dolls. The thing is some older doll lines are very hard to find because production was a lot smaller so finding them can be it's own challenge. New releases are not much of a challenge to find at the end of the day if you are willing to pay a lot you can get all of them where older dolls even if you are willing to pay crazy money sometimes no one will even sell them to you no matter what you offer. It says a lot about a doll if someone will not part with it and that will for sure make you want it more then ever.

Artificial scarcity and short-packing were obnoxious enough when I was (briefly) into action figures around 2024 and shops would separate out the chase figures and charge extra. Fortunately, with dolls, I'm not an internet hype person and just acquire the occasional old Sindy (though prices have been growing sillier and dolls that would have been in "parts condition" are now dressed up with the faults not mentioned in the description which is why I don't buy without nudes). My Barbies were mostly bought for making clothes from older patterns.

I get why people are blaming those who pay scalper prices as much as they blame scalpers… but if you live in countries where it’s difficult to get dolls in stores sometimes you don’t really have much of a choice. The mattel creations store stopped shipping to my location this year and in local stores the types of dolls that get shipped here are very limited. So unfortunately eBay is often the only option if I want certain dolls I was really looking forward to 😔
Not sure who the main target group is that are buying from scalpers but if it’s your only option to get dolls it’s sort of hard not to do, even if I get that this leads to higher prices for everyone. If companies would be better with making dolls available internationally I do believe this might make the whole scalper situation better.

I see this happens with lots of toys/other items and hype builds up over them. Good examples are the Rae Dunn Pottery, Ty Beanie Babies, etc. The secondary market is just a rip off and anyone who buys from these people are adding to the problem. Companies are notorious for making limited amounts of a toy to build demand and anger builds up from collectors because they can't find a doll they want. With the quality of the dolls made nowadays, I wouldn't spent ridiculous amounts of money on any doll. Be patient and wait for the hoopla and high prices to settle down to buy your doll. I see content makers immediately buy a doll to be the first to review them and they waste a lot of their money doing that. It is fun for the viewers but if you wait the prices come down. It may take a while, and the newness is gone but you will save yourself lots of hard-earned money. I find that there is a sweet spot between when a new released doll is popular and when it is becomes vintage/collectors lost desire to own time. That is when I try to buy because now it's not a hot item and most people have bought their dolls is the best time to buy because the price starts dropping. Example: Barbie Movie dolls they are getting close to that time. If you can wait you will save money but won't be the first to have the doll. Companies know how to play us and work it to bigger sales. I know when I see a doll that I really want I tell myself wait and see where the prices head. Patience is difficult when you really want a doll or whatever the item is, but your wallet will thank you if you wait a while. Take care.

yeah, you are 100% correct. I'm able to buy the "trendy" dolls really late, after she is not so popular, but it saves me a lot of money LOL I want that 35th Anniversary Ariel doll, but I'm waiting patiently until the hype is over. I got that 65th Birthday Brooklyn doll only now because a big discount Amazon gave on her in the end of the year (still waiting when the price for the blonde version goes down, or maybe wait until another collector gets tired of her and decides to sell her for cheap lol). I remember when I saw people buying all the BMR1959/Looks collection at a time, while it took me over a year to complete my collection (I don't have all the dolls, I bought only the ones that I liked most, I'm not a completionist) and along the way, I found nice discounts or people wanting a quick buck reselling them really cheap.

I understand that people get frustrated with people overpricing these dolls and the third-party market. But this is nothing new; this has been happening not just in the doll community but in any other toy community. This is normal behavior for people trying to make a dollar, especially now more than ever in this economy. We don't need to put energy into bringing it up, posting all about it; it's all giving light to these people and showing other people that the product is out there. Unless you're willing to pay the price.

I like older dolls so I usually buy them from mercari or eBay and Etsy. Some I buy new but the doll community was strong when mean girls bratz were in the hands of scalpers and they kept lowering the price. I just wish this stopped. The wicked dolls being sold for high prices because of that misprint. For them to release the same dolls just with blacked out stickers and scratches on the box.

Theres an amazon listing for her
Thats the only way id buy her. Its tough being Canadian since we get barely a fraction of what the states gets so we pay more no matter what

It's a complete shame that Mattel is basically partnering with scalpers. I want the Midge doll, but not at secondary market prices.

you're disillusioned with me? nah. i hate scalping. I remember when i wanted Mohawk Storm of X-Men Toy Biz figures, and scalpers were selling her for $40 online when she was $7.99 in stores...if you could find her.

They also do this with their hot wheels cars they is always a chase that is one to a box so scalpers will buy and then resell.

It's kind of nuts considering it's just a doll and yeah people move on very fast. Not many people are looking for older dolls it's mostly about the new releases and it gets annoying.

Yeah, like. I get why old dolls (that was a playline upon release) become pricey is because of Survivorship.. Meaning they were abundant and so popular that they were so played.. And only a handful survived because of that... That's why I understand (still bummed tho) fashion fever Barbies (that are nfrb) are pricey... On ebay

    • @coolfashiondollstuff

@nevernadeshiko164 yeah someone paying a lot for an older doll you can't just buy any old place makes more sense then someone over paying for something that in a few months will be forgotten because newer playline dolls are forgotten very easy especially the barbie once they changed to the hollow plastic legs you saw a massive downgrade in quality which was about 2010. Monster high only really caught on because the style if the dolls were fun and the outfits gad nice details but when you try to buy old Monster high it's clear that the dolls did not age well. Monster high was not intended to be kept for over ten years or more so now the old dolls are kind of starting to fall apart. I love them as a teen but it's sad that they just were not made to last very long.

TBH, the only Steffie doll I'm diying for is the Top Model Runaway Summer, which I think is the most different Steffie doll around. She looks so fierce!

its a frustrating situation as a collector not from the US. the steffie sculpt is already rare, moreso in the Philippines and now its become an unfortunate subject of this treasure hunt which like you've said, brought out the worst in collectors and non-collectors.
hope those who want her can find her at a fair price 🤞 im excited for next week because my pink prosthetic girlie is arriving in the country (sadly i had to pay almost 40 US dollars for her...)

I personally like what I like and I don't mind getting something late, or "old news". If I like a doll, I like her and want her. But I won't pay a dime over retail. I hope they keep stocking her after the craze. She's the only one I want in this set. I wish the doll with braids had better fabric cause her outfit was so cute, so I'll just stick to the mtm Heidi from the last Looks wave.
