- Hi Lovelies! Let’s Paint! All year I’ve been painting small watercolor sketches en plein air, mostly taking around 5 or 10 minutes, sometimes up to 20 minutes per page & I wanted to share a few tips.. .
1. Materials Matter.. . It might take a while to figure out what you like to use. Using materials you like will make a huge difference. I’ve really enjoyed the size, amount of pages & format of these Arches sketchbooks, they are lightweight, have the support board already attached, & aren’t too big {so I don’t feel like I have to do a large sketch or ‘waste paint’ on a sketch}
I’ve dappled with different travel brushes, different travel palettes & extra supplies like Neocolors or watercolor crayons
2. Consolidate your sketching kit.. . Creating a Sketching Kit is such an enjoyable endeavor! This follows along from the first tip but adding extra supplies or taking away supplies you don’t use will take some time to decide on. It can also change depending on how long you’ll be somewhere {ie is it a holiday, a day trip, an afternoon, or a quick sketch on a train}
3. Take colors relevant to your subject matter. Often we can know beforehand some of the general colors we may need for our subject matter, but it’s always exciting to improvise on the spot as well! It can help us find some beautiful & unusual color pairings!
{Color Mentioned ~ Daniel Smith Hibiscus}
4. Practice beforehand or as you will see, practice afterwards. In your quick initial sketch try to think about the colors or particular things you’re seeing that interest you.. . Once you get home you can refine those sketches, try other colors or compositions etc
5. Create a zoomed in & zoomed out version of the same scene. {also create a more figurative/realistic & more out of focus/abstract version}
6. Create a night & day version, or a morning/afternoon version. {you could also create a tonal black & white version paired with a color version}
7. Think about what you’re trying to achieve, or what matters to you in capturing your scene.. . For me, it’s about getting as much form in as possible in a very short amount of time. Also thinking through color choices & how to show as much of the feeling of that scene without being able to take a long time to accurately capture it.. .
8. Convey your heart! This might sound a bit odd but there are things you will see or feel that no one else might notice, if you want the sky a certain color, paint that!
9. Focus on one type of thing you want to improve, for example in this video we focus on nocturne paintings & watery washes for the clouds & sky.
Heres a wonderful video about Nocturne Paintings from @IntheStudioArtInstruction {its for painting in oils but alot of the same concepts can be applied to watercolor}

I also mentioned John Wolseley, we will talk more about him in upcoming videos, but heres a couple of amazing videos

10. Have Fun! This should definitely be a low stress activity.. . Even though i only have a few minutes , i dont try to rush them or be overly concerned about the outcome, i know i can change things/repaint things later so i just try to absorb as much of the scene & the beauty of the scene as possible & enjoy this time!
Ok, don’t forget, next week will be about the pink palette, swatches, favorite mixes, glazing, & more autumn scenes, if you want me to add anything in particular please let me know!
Have a loveliest of weeks! 🥳💝🎨🪷🌷🦋
🌬️✨✨✨
I do so hope you realise how special you are and that there is nothing similar to what you do on TH-cam - so beautiful, calm, peaceful, relaxing, creative & inspirational. The Nocturne sketchbook is a wonderful idea and I would love you to do a 'paint along' of something similar to the one with the birds - perhaps bats & Halloweeny? Your videos continue to help me through a very dark depression. Thank you.
Aww Thankyou Ever So!I will definitely do a video over the holidays painting the bird page, I couldn’t get it done by Halloween but I’ll show you how to do bats as well in the video so you’re ready for next year {it seems to roll around so quickly!} have a wonderful week! 🥳🤗🫧✨🪷🌷💝🦋🍁🍂
Beautiful images 😊
Love the fireworks page.
I would like to see more work with oil paint or oil paint sticks 😊
Lovely video, thanks!❤
Thankyou So! You got it, oil painting videos will be on their way soon! 🥳🎨✨🫧🌷💗
Thank you so much for sharing this video & the tips you have learned. I absolutely Love your style & seeing the benefit of keeping a Sketchbook. Can't wait for the next video.
Aww Thankyou Ever So! Yes Sketchbooks can be such a treat! A very nice way to also understand our progress, what to work on, what we like & don’t like, & then to see how far we’ve come! Have a wonderful week! Next video should be up soon! 🤗✨🫧🎨💝🦋🪷
Wonderful idea to paint the night sky. As the nights are getting longer I could give it a try.
Oh that sounds luminous! It would be so nice if we could all have a sky painting party! 🥳🦋🪷🎨🫧💝🌷
Love it ❤❤❤❤❤bravissima
Thankyou Ever So! Have a scrumptious week! 🥳🎨✨🪷🫧💝🌷💗
Love your watercolor use. The combinations of colors and the metallics or sparkly encourage me to use my pearlescent colors etc. I may just bring them out of the drawer now haha.
Thankyou Ever So! Ooh yes do embrace the sparkle! I feel like the most awe inspiring times we have are when we see sparkle on the water, or sunlight through the trees, or the glisten of dew on branches, I definitely think sparkle is a beautiful part of nature! Have a painting party! 🤗🎨✨🫧🌷💝
It might be rushing winter, but I would love to see you paint a snow scene🙂 Very relaxing video, as usual❤
hehe I feel ya, I will definitely be filling a whole winter Sketchbook with snow scenes, it’s been on my to do list since last year when I realized I need a lot more thought in this area! Stay tuned! 🤗🫧✨🎨🪷🌷🦋🥳
@@eaupoetique I love snow paintings, but they are more complicated than it appears they would be.
Hello, I would love to see your process for painting clouds. Especially the pinky orange above the dark greyish purple clouds beneath. cloud
Absolutely! We’ll do a whole video & possibly sketchbook on clouds! 🤗✨💝🪷
Hello! I only recently discovered your channel, and I really love your videos.
I have a question: when you sort in the pans in your watercolour boxes, do you use self adhesive magnetic tape under them so that they don't slide back and forth?
And another question:
I bought the golden ink from Winsor + Newton today. What confuses me is that I have to shake it constantly during use because the pigments sink so quickly. How do you handle this?
Hi! So nice to have you here! With the pans, I generally pack them in quite tightly so they don’t really have a chance to move {in the smaller palettes} in the larger palette where I take out the spokes & move them to the middle, I don’t do anything they seem to be ok & not move around much.. . If you’re worried you can also take an old tube of watercolor paint you don’t use, & squeeze a little on the bottom of the half pan, it will help it stick to the bottom but you can take it out if you need to.. . With the gold ink, yes sadly it does need to be shaken fairly often, I just take it as a necessary situation in order to get that kind of sparkle so it doesn’t bother me too much
Thanks for the questions, hope that helps! 🤗✨🫧🎨🌷🪷🦋
The W&N Gold is so worth the constant 'shaking'. Enjoy! You will love it.
@@golden1789 That´s true! I´ve just used it again 🙂
