Having 17 inch wheels is the better choice if you intend to drive off road / rough road conditions as it gives more tyre depth and better rim protection.

Just double check the full sized spare wheel. I think it's a 185 vs 225

Yes, that's correct. But it is capable of normal drive mode, unlike those skinny space saver spares. The only downside is that the flat tyre will not fit in the well completely.
