So Hyang has been singing a lot longer than Dimash, about 22 years. I think this was 2016 so she would have been 38 here. The reason she isn't so well known is, that apart from being a South Korean gospel singer she refuses to sign to any large label. She sings other genres as well so long as she finds meaning in the song. She is a cancer survivor who sings to bring comfort and healing to people not for fame or fortune. She has frequent bouts of pneumonia and only just got out of hospital here after one of those bouts and told not to sing. No doubt she was quite exhausted by the end. Oh my goodness... this is one of my go to songs, in the same category as Dimash SOS, it’s one of those to the soul and beyond voices, performances and songs. She’s amazing. I won’t be around for the live, but I’ll be watching this later for sure. Much love to all. Xo
❤️.... Sohyang is my Queen of Singers and Dimash is my King of Singers! Sohyang sings with her whole heart, soul and emotions! My favorite one is her performance: "Everyone".
Another awesome reaction Matthew! I always learn something new about the song, stage, lighting, and other tidbits I missed watching on my own. I agree with others commenting asking you to do two (2) songs from So Hyang. *Arirang Alone* and *Everyone.* These two really showcase her range and passion for singing. _Lean On Me_ is a fun one with her just cutting loose. Michael Bolton is in the audience and his reactions are priceless. *_Cheers_*
I am always a sucker for those songs that can just bring you to tears because they are just so pure and beautiful. Her voice is amazing. I wish I could’ve witnessed that live and got a better look at that saxophonist 😝 but seriously, another great reaction @Boostd Reviews! 👍🏼🙌🏼
I am very very jealous !!! I wanted your first tears to be for Dimash, the song I have asked you so many times ... #DAYBREAK with SUBTITLES. You saw at the concert but not in detail that she deserves. I did not know her, she is fantastic, but I do not get as much as Dimash or my other idol, Chris Cornell.
Very lovely, a powerful and gorgeous voice and a wonderful performance! Hard to believe she was sick while singing this! Thanks for introducing this singer to us. Please react to Morissette Amon doing Akin Ka Na Lang live (108M views in two years!). She's a Filipina singer with a stratospheric range.
She has a super soothing voice. Please react to her Arirang performance next. Btw, you always spot hidden amazing features of these videos that I generally missed :)
You should react to So Hyang singing "Where Are You"! She hits an amazing B5 and puts so much emotion into her performance, especially since she had gone through so much personal strife. Also, I just recently found your channel and absolutely LOVE your reactions! Thank you for putting great content out!
Hello. From Brazil ... I had heard this song with the group "Woman Celtics", in a very beautiful performance but I didn't know Sohyang. It's a wonderful letter. Too strong. Spiritual ... This singer is very beautiful ... and her performance was exciting
Glad you made your acquaintance with Sohyang, my favorite singer since I got to know her 4 years ago. The rearranged rendition by Sohyang is the most striking "You Raise Me Up" I've ever heard. Technically speaking, Sohyang is as impeccable as this world has to offer, but the unique thing about Sohyang is not about her vocal acrobatics but the emotion she invokes with her voice. BTW, she didn't really showcase her range in this performance. For a more detailed read of her power and range, see her in Lean On Me on the Michael Bolton Special @ th-cam.com/video/GvsgCllcNPE/w-d-xo.html BTW, the guy you saw is Shane Filan of Westlife, the Irish Boy band who also made this song into a hit. The instrument you wonder about may be a celtic whistle. You have a rather unique way of doing reactions. I've never seen anyone make so many comments on the instrumental and stage settings. At the risk of being called biased, I would say that South Koreans are truly outstanding with its stagecraft.
For me there are three top discoveries since finally starting to appreciate solo vocalists (via youtube reactors) recently: - 1) So Hyang - great to see this reaction, 2) Dimash Kudaibergen (as already featured admirably here) and 3) Hua Chenyu who followed Dimash by getting 2nd place in the "Singer" 2018 competition. He went on to win it earlier this year. He is very different from Dimash vocally, but has amazing talent for communicating the complete package of a song, together with composing and arranging. From the way you appreciate and analyse the first two, I do think you would find him interesting to add to your featured artists. At least 6-8 songs are needed to get a sense of his versatility. More than most, his performances greatly benefit from having English subtitles, even though there's something impossible about fully translating the Chinese meanings. So Hyang hits pretty high notes in this song, she just makes them so effortless and keeps them in proper service of the music. As a Christian myself, her gospel background appeals to me very much. She sings primarily to encourage and inspire people, and she does that so well. I have enjoyed many reactions to these artists through this time of virus lockdown. Yours is one of a handful of favourite channels, and I thoroughly enjoyed the full Dimash concert stream last weekend. Thank-you.
Sohyang and Dimash are the best singers in Asia, both are true machine vocalist, in this perfomance Sohyang has pneumonia and his doctor say she can't sing and her don't sing, she sanggg with his heart
I haven't seen anyone mention that she had severe pneumonia when she sang this, the doctor advised her not to perform but she did anyway. Could be one of the reasons she cuts the end note so quickly, she probably knew she couldn't sustain it. But wtf, when I had pneumonia i was in bed for days couldn't do anything, she goes on stage and sings her heart out.
Thank you so much for your reaction to this... I am a keyboard player and recently discovered Sohyang... wow what an incredible, soulful, powerful, clean and divine vocalist she is! I cannot listen to any of her performances without crying! lol! It does not matter what age, sex, race or religion you are.... music is truly the universal language that has no boundaries, and she speaks it so so fluently. In our current global situation we can find strength, unity and hope from this music!
I love how you notice the little things other reactors don't mention, all the atmospherics in lighting, colour, shapes, wardrobe and instrumentation as well as the main attraction, the performer themselves. I came here from watching your reactions to Dimash. Keep up the great work, Matt👍✌❤ I also watched your video in response to some who have questioned your integrity. I really felt for you and I hope your lovely subscribers continue to donate to your BFF and to your PayPal account 👍 Tuning in all the way from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
This is my fave song that I've heard since it was performed. She's an outstanding singer who can be called vocal master but above all she's a respectable person with great character. Love, hope, and dreams are the main themes of her songs and the reasons she sings.
Trust me dude, this was only 25% of her capabilities. She had pneumonia that day and was told by her doctor not to perform but she did it anyway. React to Everyone or Arirang Alone next and you will see what she is about. Take care.
Next you should check out Sohyang's performance of "Fate" ... You can find the EngSub version on Vimeo, it's a Korean song and one of her most beautiful performances IMO. And she sustains her notes pretty long in that one ;)
She has much longer sustained final notes with vibrato in other songs, but this was a straight tone which is harder to sustain. Fate has an impressive ending with transitions from one sustained note to another. Dream has a sustained Bb5 in mixed voice transitioning to a sustained D6 head voice. Second she had pneumonia and had been advised not to sing. Please listen to SOHYANG (소향) & DIMASH (Димаш) Shocking High Notes! th-cam.com/video/SMimPW-97Co/w-d-xo.html to see the extent of their ranges and textures are similar and her voice does not thin out as much as Dimash in the highest part of their shared mixed voice and head voice register ranges.
I unfortunately can't watch it live. I am in Germany. But I'll definitely watch your reaction later. I love So Hyang! One of my favorites is the song "Hug me" but the live version. Her vocals are incredible. I'll try to insert the link here. th-cam.com/video/SdkvAX2O7aU/w-d-xo.html
I think you would love her Arirang performance! I always picture an epic battle scene as she performs that song! The arrangement, support vocals, and her stage presence is AMAZING in that performance!!
Great reaction! Sohyang is incredible! One of the best vocalists ever! And as amazing as this performance is, she actually had pneumonia at the time so this isn’t even her full potential! She’s 42 years old and has a background in gospel, and she’s spent years perfecting her technique to where it is now. If you were a fan of this, I’d also recommend her performances of “Arirang Alone” and “Everyone.” They’re even more incredible!
I love her voice. And I had listened her first time three years ago. She was attending in the I Am Singer contest, where Dimash was attending, but one year ago than Dimash. She is so strong singer
fab reaction xxxx she is such a beautiful performer and singer isnt she. stunning voice. her performance of bridge over troubled water is outstanding. on another note if you up for more epic performers maybe you could check out a composer/singer/performer from china called hua chenyu. totally up there with dimash for different reasons. his original compositions and re arrangements, imo, are the best i have heard for decades. more of a rock voice but has many tones and can do soprano as well as rap and much more. all of his performances are stunning and visual and very unique. i can give you a whole list of his work but most people start with nunchucks and then fake monk. i have been following his music for nearly 2 years and he has the most beautiful pure personality i have ever seen in a person....is that enough to convince you to check him out.... my friend, exaggerated, dad i am home, i am what i am will leave you in tears. his performance of folding is visually outstanding, i know you like the visuals so think you would love that one. there is also a you tube chanel called hua chenyu english that works tirelessly to translate is work.
Hah! When you said "That looks like some sort of recorder, BUT it's being played so beautifully..." reminds me of Twoset Violin's recorder vs violin video and Lucie Horsch's reply. Lucie Horsch being a super talented recorder player.
Just an fyi... the guy in the stands was Shane Filan from Westlife, who has one of the most revered renditions of this song. He immediately went on the record saying SoHyang's version was his favorite.
Her other good songs are bridge over troubled water, lean on me, i have nothing, oh holy night, everyone, arirang alone. And please react at the mask singer show for better version such as Hug me, breath, where are you, do you know, fate, monalisa.
Her songs that will make you shooked ! 1. Everyone 2. Arirang Alone 3. Bridge Over Troubled Water 4. Where Are You 5. In The Flower Garden 6. Lean on Me 7. Home 8. Dream 9. Fate 10. Hug me
she was sick that day, told to not sing at all by Drs. I always thought that was why she cut the last note short. Usually she will do a really long Bb5 or D6 etc..
I love how reactors who are usually of a particular music genre reacts to music of a totally opposite one yet the human experience is still the same. Awesome! You got good eyes to take note of the lights and the production that changes based on the arrangement to get a different feel and theme of certain parts. This is a fantastic collaborative effort by everyone to give the audience something of a religious experience.
Matthew, so happy you checked out So Hyang; she, Dimash, and Hua Chenyu are my three favorites, and three of the best singers in the world. I would highly recommend Arirang Alone and Bridge Over Troubled Water, as they are even better than this. If you are willing to check out Hua Chenyu, who was in the Singer 2018, the year after Dimash and a good friend of Dimash's, please check out Child. I guarantee you will find it stunning.
We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she's from another planet or perhaps an angel come down from Heaven. We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. She does all the musical arrangements herself, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese. Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of "You Raise Me Up" before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV. She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 42 on April 5, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 35 when she sang this version of "Arirang Alone." th-cam.com/video/zFyndK9VOCk/w-d-xo.html She decided to enter a televised singing contest called "King of the Masked Singers" in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on TH-cam. Apparently Oprah Winfrey saw her on TH-cam and showed her to David Foster, who then contacted her and went to Japan in order to work together. She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." So she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! Please analyze her performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water." th-cam.com/video/C6iHh4yBxCo/w-d-xo.html And also, please react to her version of "The Power of Love": th-cam.com/video/LrNkVRrK7_I/w-d-xo.html So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being! She is beautiful both inside and out--and so humble! Here's an English language interview with her that I'm sure you will enjoy: th-cam.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/w-d-xo.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I'll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang says that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she has never gone above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is approaching a 5 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: th-cam.com/video/VnPAkryrygQ/w-d-xo.html
She is a cancer survivor, a throat tumor survivor, a believer, and a conquerer. ANY of her performance is perfect but I personally love "home" from masked singer original. I still tear up a little when I hear it.

Arirang Alone (th-cam.com/video/zFyndK9VOCk/w-d-xo.html) (Also, emotional. Arirang is a folk song with many variations from different regions of Korea. It's kind of the unofficial anthem of Korea. Arirang doesn't really have a definition. It's more like a concept of longing. The "hill" symbolizes a trial to overcome. As beautiful as this was, we long time fans can tell how sick she was this day. "Everyone" is a 7+ minute Master Class and a must See.
ME TOO!!!
Thanks for the reaction!!!!!
QUEEN SO HYANG!!!!!
More So Hyang!!!!!!
Ya active el recordatorio! Estoy muy emocionada por esta reacción....Muchas Gracias!
You should react to So Hyang singing "Where Are You"! She hits an amazing B5 and puts so much emotion into her performance, especially since she had gone through so much personal strife.
Also, I just recently found your channel and absolutely LOVE your reactions! Thank you for putting great content out!
I agree, but not the TH-cam version since they edited her speaking part right when she hits the B5
Hello. From Brazil ... I had heard this song with the group "Woman Celtics", in a very beautiful performance but I didn't know Sohyang. It's a wonderful letter. Too strong. Spiritual ... This singer is very beautiful ... and her performance was exciting
I got chills! She's really good. Hope she and dimash would do a duet soon wowowowow
For a more detailed read of her power and range, see her in Lean On Me on the Michael Bolton Special @ th-cam.com/video/GvsgCllcNPE/w-d-xo.html
BTW, the guy you saw is Shane Filan of Westlife, the Irish Boy band who also made this song into a hit.
Thank-you.
Her back story with cancer and love for God makes this even more powerful....please react to more SoHyang!
Sohyang and Dimash are the best singers in Asia, both are true machine vocalist, in this perfomance Sohyang has pneumonia and his doctor say she can't sing and her don't sing, she sanggg with his heart
Jeeeeezzz....you're killin' me with your Friday choices this week. 😭😭😭
She Is another angel beatifull voice, good Matt 👍
I haven't seen anyone mention that she had severe pneumonia when she sang this, the doctor advised her not to perform but she did anyway. Could be one of the reasons she cuts the end note so quickly, she probably knew she couldn't sustain it. But wtf, when I had pneumonia i was in bed for days couldn't do anything, she goes on stage and sings her heart out.
She did it as intended, sustaining the end note without vibrato.
I've seen several of your reaction videos and I have to admit I really like them. Keep doing the great job you're doing.
I will never never ever ever get tired of listening to her version of this song. Everrrrr !
One of the best vocalists in the World.
Very nice reaction..you should listen to her performing Everyone
I love how you notice the little things other reactors don't mention, all the atmospherics in lighting, colour, shapes, wardrobe and instrumentation as well as the main attraction, the performer themselves. I came here from watching your reactions to Dimash. Keep up the great work, Matt👍✌❤ I also watched your video in response to some who have questioned your integrity. I really felt for you and I hope your lovely subscribers continue to donate to your BFF and to your PayPal account 👍 Tuning in all the way from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
she was very sick during the performance... still nailed it.. You need to watch Everyone... most of it is sang in the fifth octave
This is my fave song that I've heard since it was performed. She's an outstanding singer who can be called vocal master but above all she's a respectable person with great character. Love, hope, and dreams are the main themes of her songs and the reasons she sings.
She has something that touches our hearts.
This young lady is very very good ! Your hair is fine....
Loveeeeeee
Trust me dude, this was only 25% of her capabilities. She had pneumonia that day and was told by her doctor not to perform but she did it anyway. React to Everyone or Arirang Alone next and you will see what she is about. Take care.
Next you should check out Sohyang's performance of "Fate" ... You can find the EngSub version on Vimeo, it's a Korean song and one of her most beautiful performances IMO. And she sustains her notes pretty long in that one ;)
So Yang é a melhor! Toca o coração!
She had pneumonia that day and I'm guessing that's the reason because over 40 of her performances she holds a much higher note for 10 to 15 seconds.
Yay! You reacted to her! Thank you for appreciating her
I unfortunately can't watch it live.
Ohh, deutsche Sohyang-Fans :D
I love your react like always, because it is so real, not over reaction, i love it
She is truly amazing! Try to listen some more songs of her ☺️
I think you would love her Arirang performance! I always picture an epic battle scene as she performs that song! The arrangement, support vocals, and her stage presence is AMAZING in that performance!!
Thank you for responding to Sohyang’s song today. You are a wonderful person. And I just became your subscriber. haha
With your reactions to Dimash, I can only imagine what you will have to say about So Hyang, lets go!
I love her voice. And I had listened her first time three years ago. She was attending in the I Am Singer contest, where Dimash was attending, but one year ago than Dimash. She is so strong singer
But Dimash attend the China version I am a Singer 2017 while So Hyang in Korean 2012
Matt when I watched this reaction, your facial expressions made it look like you were thinking of Liz. 😉🤗
fab reaction xxxx she is such a beautiful performer and singer isnt she. stunning voice. her performance of bridge over troubled water is outstanding. on another note if you up for more epic performers maybe you could check out a composer/singer/performer from china called hua chenyu. totally up there with dimash for different reasons. his original compositions and re arrangements, imo, are the best i have heard for decades. more of a rock voice but has many tones and can do soprano as well as rap and much more. all of his performances are stunning and visual and very unique. i can give you a whole list of his work but most people start with nunchucks and then fake monk. i have been following his music for nearly 2 years and he has the most beautiful pure personality i have ever seen in a person....is that enough to convince you to check him out.... my friend, exaggerated, dad i am home, i am what i am will leave you in tears. his performance of folding is visually outstanding, i know you like the visuals so think you would love that one. there is also a you tube chanel called hua chenyu english that works tirelessly to translate is work.
I cried like you so many times when I watch this performance
omg! Yes, finally So Hyang! Awesome reaction
This is like 5% of her power. Please react to everyone!! Thanks for this reaction, Matt. You're the best and you deserve all the milk!
Hah! When you said "That looks like some sort of recorder, BUT it's being played so beautifully..." reminds me of Twoset Violin's recorder vs violin video and Lucie Horsch's reply. Lucie Horsch being a super talented recorder player.
Thank you for the reaction~
Welcome to Sohyang's world~^^
It's my favorite song~~~🥰😍🤩
Angelic Sohyang~~~
Just an fyi... the guy in the stands was Shane Filan from Westlife, who has one of the most revered renditions of this song.
He immediately went on the record saying SoHyang's version was his favorite.
One thing about so hyang…Her technique is perfect..She doesnt strain unlike Dimash☕️
Her other good songs are bridge over troubled water, lean on me, i have nothing, oh holy night, everyone, arirang alone.
And please react at the mask singer show for better version such as Hug me, breath, where are you, do you know, fate, monalisa.
Her songs that will make you shooked !
1. Everyone
2. Arirang Alone
3. Bridge Over Troubled Water
4. Where Are You
5. In The Flower Garden
6. Lean on Me
7. Home
8. Dream
9. Fate
10. Hug me
she was sick that day, told to not sing at all by Drs. I always thought that was why she cut the last note short. Usually she will do a really long Bb5 or D6 etc..
Rect to Sohyang - Arirang Alone, please 😍
I love how reactors who are usually of a particular music genre reacts to music of a totally opposite one yet the human experience is still the same. Awesome! You got good eyes to take note of the lights and the production that changes based on the arrangement to get a different feel and theme of certain parts. This is a fantastic collaborative effort by everyone to give the audience something of a religious experience.
You're in for a treat. Two not mentioned are OH HOLY NIGHT and BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER
nice meet you ^^
I'm SoHyang's fan
Thank you for your nice review
I subscribed ~ good luck !!!
Bye !!!
Your reaction is gorgeous!
I guarantee you will find it stunning.
more sohyang pleaseee
Thank you for the reaction. "Bridge over troubled water" is also one of her best performances🙂👍❤
Korean, English, French and
Vietnamese.
She was about 35 when she sang this version of "Arirang Alone." th-cam.com/video/zFyndK9VOCk/w-d-xo.html
She decided to enter a televised singing contest called "King of the Masked Singers" in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on TH-cam.
Please analyze her performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water." th-cam.com/video/C6iHh4yBxCo/w-d-xo.html
And also, please react to her version of "The Power of Love": th-cam.com/video/LrNkVRrK7_I/w-d-xo.html
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being!
React to So Hyang Arirang Alone or Lean On Me!! Is crazzyyyyy
Isn’t she magnificent? I would love to see her do a duet with Dimash. I’m not sure my brain could handle that!😍
Ah! [Little fan scream] I never thought you would react to Sohyang.
She is a cancer survivor, a throat tumor survivor, a believer, and a conquerer. ANY of her performance is perfect but I personally love "home" from masked singer original. I still tear up a little when I hear it.
She had that last note pretty long… She cuts it off pretty abruptly with an exclamation point, but she held it long enough before that.
Please react to Sohyang more!!
Everyone (vimeo.com/249195615)
: This vimeo link has English subtitles for the lyrics (This is probably the most emotional one. Very Gospel.)
Arirang Alone (th-cam.com/video/zFyndK9VOCk/w-d-xo.html)
(Also, emotional. Arirang is a folk song with many variations from different regions of Korea. It's kind of the unofficial anthem of Korea. Arirang doesn't really have a definition. It's more like a concept of longing. The "hill" symbolizes a trial to overcome. "Arirang Alone" is a song that longs for the reunification of the two Koreas.)
Lean On Me (th-cam.com/video/GvsgCllcNPE/w-d-xo.html) (Michale Bolton appeared on the show as a guest)
I Will Always Love You
(Definitely did this song Justice)

I Have Nothing (th-cam.com/video/Nr8_nr4Bofk/w-d-xo.html) (Another Whitney ;))
Bridge Over Troubled Water
(Probs the best rendition of the classic Simon and Garfunkle song)
