The music is surprisingly spot-on. Easily the closest sound to the arcade of any home port other than the 32X and emulation-type ports like the Saturn.

No wonder - I just did some looking, and the NEC PC-88 computer and Sega's Super Scalar arcade hardware used the same sound chip, the Yamaha YM2203. I used to own the non-moving sit-down arcade version (I bought back in '94 from a local arcade) and I'm very familiar with the music...I knew there had to be a reason they sounded so alike!

Despite the rather simplistic graphics and voices of this version of the arcade classic, I still find the gameplay to play pretty well for the hardware it's running on, and I also find the music to be very nice to listen to.

The reason why the game runs so well is because they limited the graphics. If they would've gone with more accurate graphics to the arcade version then the framerates and scrolling would've suffered an immense loss, as it is common with PC-88 games.
Yeah, the music is great - but that's to be expected with a PC-88 game / port. 😉

@@Highretrogamelord Yeah I do realize that, it was a good decision to focus on the gameplay playing well than it taking a hit because of the graphics.

You did better than me in this version

I don't think so. I mean we both got only to stage 7. 😉

    I think it's a very good result.

All things considered, yes. Of course it is not the best version, but it is playable (level 4 not so much though, as it isn't good on the eyes).

Given the system its running on, this is pretty good.

This is an excellent port.!!! Trouble is it's way too fast, and the speed setting doesn't seem to change anything 😭

    Wow.

Music & sound are close to the arcade, but this port looks like an unfinished prototype!

Well, yeah, they had to sacrifice the graphics for smoother scrolling and gameplay. If they would've gone with graphics more accurate to the arcade version then the scrolling and gameplay would've suffered a lot.

Is this what the graphics actually look like? I thought we were just seeing blocks for sprites blocks and lack of animation because of the emulator involved.

@@RetroFett Do you folks even understand the ultra limited hardware this is running on? Jesuschrist
This is insanely impressive the way it is

@@radiantansel202 right, dempa made rhe right choice. The feeling and music are spot on! Even in the arcade version the speed is too high to appreciate the graphics anyway 😅
