Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus - An All Terrain for Winter 2019

  • Today we have the Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus. The Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus is a great new all terrain tire, does well in the snow just in time for winter 2019. This Pirelli is good for a SUVs or Toyota 4 Runner, Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Tacoma, or Chevrolet Colorado. I think that Pirelli really spent the time to develop this all terrain tire and make it very competitive. That being said, I think it kind of gets lost in the shuffle because there are so many great alternatives. If you want something a little different than everyone else is riding, give them a shot.
For the record, truck stop hot dogs can be a delicious treat or bring on food borne illnesses. You know that going in and sometimes the risk is worth the reward. Same goes for the Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus.

I’ve had them on my 2002 Ford Expedition for the last 1 1/2 years.
I’ve driven accross several states with little to no noise, through about 1- 1 1/2 feet of snow with no problem, off roading through some mud, some sand and through up too about 3 feet of water.
They handle very nicely and haven’t let me down yet when off roading through some sketchy situations. I love these tires!

I've had these on my VW Amarok for over 30,000km now. It's handled high-speed twisty mountain roads, black ice and torrential rain on tarmac, mud, snow, wet grass, sand, gravel and high speed dirt road better than any other tyre I've owned. Sure my previous BFG's may've been a little better offroad, especially in muddy terrain but these Pirelli's give up little there to be excellent for 90% of my driving surfaces. There's at least another 20,000km on these tyres. The on-road performance as an AT tyre is the standout feature. The turn-in and rapid direction change handling is better than many HT tyres. I'm hooking this car through mountain pass roads from everything to bone-empty through to hauling 3000kg on the towbar. I regularly haul 700-950kg in the tub down 100kph country roads. I love this tyre and they're going straight on my wife's Ranger the day their OEM Bridgestone HT's are worn.
Interesting that "wet grass" is called out in this review. My BFG AT KO2's struggled on icy/snowy/wet grass in my paddock. I slid down my highest paddock for about 400m in those. Same hill in the Pirelli's I at least had the ability to stop with my brakes, not the creek-line fence like I did in the BFG's.

I'm a tire tech in akron ohio, and let me say, I'm extremely picky about my tires since I do this everyday. I had a set of Michelin defender Ltx on my 2014 f150 2WD and I was happy with them, but being that our snowfall often exceeds 12 inches I was wanting more traction. I bought these tires for the premise of wet and snow traction and because pirelli designed these tires for 90% on road usage and the other 10 for wet and snow traction (and they can hold their own offroad but not like some other tires in the category). The snow traction on these is very good, probably the 2nd best I've had next to a blizzak. But the thing that impressed me the most was how quiet they are. They were marginally louder than my defenders, which as you probably know is one of the most comfortable tires out there. If you're looking for a good all around tire I'd highly recommend these scorpions. The only downfall is the slightly lower treadwear warranty, which is reflected in the price. I'll definitely be getting another set when these wear out.

Great info, thanks. I just ordered a set from Costco for my 2015 Ford F-150. Great to hear your endorsement and with other research I've done. My buddy has K02s (they're everywhere) and they are noisy on the highway and wearing quicker than they had hoped. I got 80,000 km out of my Goodyear Wranglers which have worn well and included 15,000 km while towing a 7,000lb RV. I was pleased with them, but they weren't the best in snow. I am looking forward to putting these Pirelli's to the test and doing a review in the winter.

Now after some km's I can say tires is AWESOME and unique-perfect balanced for all conditions. Much balanced than any other similar AT's. I try 10 similar top ATR tires, this AT+ beat all of them! Top balanced tires ever. Very smooth, very quiet! And without compromise in safe driving. This is must important. Great.
Really great tires. Highly ...highly...highly recommended. Probably next set of tires is also the same ScorpionsAT+. On dry and wet is fantastic! I can't believe ABS not go to On!! Nothing! Wow. Car is only stop and stick like glue! BTW. What a difference! (with other tires have many problems with similar wet conditions, Scorpions AT+ is really best)
    Highway-top! Offroad is - Wow!
Now I know what is " power without control is nothing". AT+ have all.
; of course, and honestly, I hope that in future versions I hope that the sidewall will be strengthened.
But, since these are new tire compound technologies, I can only pay attention and test them in future trips and see how is "strong" or durable At+ tire and how it will behave on slightly more difficult off-road roads. In my case I have XL version plies tread: 2 poliester, 2 steel + 2 nylon sidewalls.
    Max.psi is 44.
Well....time will show the durability of the tire as well as the types of roads on which it will roll. We'll see how behaves as time goes by ....

In rain, I'd rate the Michelin and the Pirelle's tied. Noticable better than the BFG's. BFG' s are noticable better in Mud, then the others. The Pirelle's do great in mud, but don't clear as nice if you floor it and get them spinning. Michelin don't like mud and clog up.BTW I've put a lot of miles on the Pirelle's, with very little wear. So it really comes down to where you drive most, and what the biggest challenge you would face. Off road, either the Pirelle's or BFG. On road... Pirelle's. Winter demands ice, sleet, slush... Michelin. SNOW either the Pirelle's or BFG would be awesome, but keep in mind, BFG do the worst of the three in slush and deep puddles of heavy rain

I do 90% on-road driving, so I'd rather have a quiet tire, but I'd like to keep at least some of the aggressive AT look. How do these Pirelli's compare to the Continental Terrain Contact A/T?

They are similar. The Pirelli is more aggressive and carries the 3 peaks snow rating. So if you drive in snow do the Pirelli first but if you don't do snow, get the Terrain Contact AT.

Most of my driving is street but I do hunt/fish so I do the logging roads and class 6 roads here in NH. I live in a rural area and we have long hard winters and snow packed roads so I like the 3peak mountain snowflake rating.
