- The most difficult thing to get used to working in the film industry is its oscillating nature. Through this video I wanted to speak about the decades of stardom and downfall in #bollywood . We might see the likes of #srk and #hrithikroshan but it all started with the likes of #rajeshkhanna #amitabhbachchan and #govinda in the 80s. Has #ranbirkapoor become worthy of the status? Who will be next? I hope you like the video on The Dark Reality Of Bollywood Stardom

Stardom is defined by the number of people who come to watch your film on day one, in a theatre-without being dependent on how good the trailer was, how fantastic the songs were, or how cool the poster was. They come to watch you. Irrespective of everything else. That's the true definition of stardom. - Vicky Kaushal ( totally agree with his statement)
Yup! I still think the market dynamics currently are slightly different. A terrible trailer even for a star like Salman Khan affects his first day. So an effective marketing push has become essential more than ever!
@@TriedRefusedProductionsSorry. It is bitter but true that we love culture, history & mythology based projects of other countries. But such projects of India are divided into north-south, TV-MOVIE-OTT... Why.
For example:- Everyone love anime & is making amine based channels, but ,regional movie induatries & Tv induatry are rarely touched. Nobody realise that gold and diamonds are extracted from coal mines.
Just like our childhood.

Amitabh's rise, downfall, and then rise again is legendary.
The man hit rock bottom, had humongous debt, failed business, and was completely decimated before he took matters in his own hands and rose again like a phoenix!
Today, he's giving youngsters a run for their money. Superstar of the millennium for a reason. 🔥
Post 1985 his stardom waned..He is not a superstar anymore..He is a great great actor but not a superstar like rajnikant and Kamal Hasan sir anymore..Rajni Sir and Kamal Sis is still acting as a lead hero in his 70s and there movies are still becoming superhits.
While Amitabh is acting as a supporting hero or father of lead actors.
@jayesh1643 Lol..stardom is not defined by only commerce, which Amitabh has gone beyond and sarpassed years ago. And sorry, but Kamal was never a "superstar". He was always a great actor and respected artist.. his movies were not blockbusters like those of Rajini, Mohanlal. Only exceptions are Vishwaroopam and Vikram. Also, south has a different ecosystem when it comes to stardom as compared to North. Rajinikanth became a superstar by remaking Amitabh's movies like Deewar, Tishul, Don etc. And now, even he doesn't rake in the numbers he once used to.
Amitabh is 80+ now.. post 2000s his hype was rejuvenated to the point where he was pitted against then superstar SRK continuously. Baghban, Babul, Kante, Khakee, Aan, Black, Cheeni Kum, Pa were carried by his megastardom. His superstar only waned from 1985-1990 and then 1992-1999. He is still very much who he used to be.
Absolutely. Infact movie can be made on him. The greatest superstar of all time

Amitabh Bachchan and SRK's stardom path will always be legendary. Both touched the extreme level of stardom for such a long time (especially SRK). Then came a downfall for both in which nothing was going right (debt and political situation of Bachchan, and Aryan case of SRK). But after that both made a huge comeback and conquered the crown of Shahenshah and Badshaah once again in it's full glory.
truly never seen before. These two types of star don't come around often.
I don't comment on anywhere but I will comment here. One thing both of these starts realised that they have to reinvent. For Mr Bacchan it was his wise elderly type characters from his angry young man. For srk it was transition from romantic boy to nationalistic hero. That's why Amir can take huge break and still can appeal to audiences because he reinvent himself in every movie.

Amitabh Bachchan is different gravy altogether. Shahrukh is obviously a star. But Amitabh... he's a league beyond "stardom" and all. He is a true acting phenom.
True old school stardom doesn't exist for the new age celebrities...they never will be able to enjoy the true love from people that the celebrities used to enjoy earlier
This is far from the truth. We like to romanticise how great stardom was is the past but it is far from the truth. In every age people had to earn the love and respect from the crowd and when they didnt they fade away. You are only thinking about the good times of great star from the past here but that is just half the picture .
Its mostly due to the internet and its availabilities now, being a part of the current generation myself i realize how frequently bored we are for the smallest reasons,we always want something new something fresh but the fact about enjoyment is gone, the mass films and the colourful days are truly gone and it cant be brought back.We have access to all platforms making us often choose ott release of Theatre released films too.
It's because of ott platforms I don't go to watch movies because I know they will ne available someday to watch in my home and also people nowadays are such snowflakes that a star can't share his own opinion cause people will get offended and their stardom will go down as it happened with Amir.

The whole game here is to pivot at the right time if you wish to stay relevant. Amitabh Bachhan has set the template, wisely followed by Anil Kapoor in the current timeline. Accepting the fact that you are not a star anymore and realizing that its time to be an actor. Rest is all delusion.
Bang on about both actors who have had an unprecedented longevity
@efusedProductions It needs to be mentioned that pre 90s superstars were great actors as well like Amitabh and Dilip Kumar. The general perception is that Amitabh only played angry young man roles in the 70s and 80s, alongwith the masala potboilers of Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra, whilst not much is talked about his Hrishikesh Mukherjee films where he proved his mettle as an actor of calibre, not to mention unconventional choices like Saudagar, Parwana, and Main Azaad Hoon, among others. Ditto with the trio of Dilip-Raj-Dev as they have played many grey shaded and morally ambiguous characters in their heyday instead of playing "hero" who romances the heroine, dances around trees, and beats up the villain to save the day.
Among the 90s badge, SRK, Salman, and Akshay, majorly played safe and diversified their choices only occasionally, while Aamir and Ajay did it at a much more consistent phase with projects like Raakh, 1947:Earth, Zakhm, Bhagat Singh, Raincoat, etc. Anmol, I request you to pls make a video on this as well as I feel sometimes Hindi Cinema is unnecessarily vilified and shown inferior in comparison to the Southern industries for not doing anything different or experimental although there are innumerable examples to the contrary, when in fact, all 4 southern industries too suffer from the 'star syndrome' at a much larger scale that is barely highlighted and brushed under the carpet.
@@uditnath5272Amitabh is know for his masala movies and he wasn't able to do romance..Ajay Devgan is only good in dialogue delivery.

Most of Amitabh movies from 1975 to 1985 were similiar..None of Amitabh movie with hrishikesh Mukherjee is still remembered,he is mostly known for his angry young man roles..Had a huge downfall from 1985 to 1999..But still he showed his mettle from year2000 performing in mature roles.

Saif never had that star pull ever since his debut😂
He never had that pull , he survived as a side hero in 90s and then ventured into experimental cinema
That's not what he realised lmao he never had commercial pull what he realised was to become a good actor is much better than to do storyless mass movies and ventured into the good stuff and learned to act.
Saif has more of a Niche audienece that are very loyal to him , he doesnt have the mass Pull though.

I think Anil Kapoor is the only actor who has been very noticeable and without any major letdown in this industry. Doing side characters but still not losing the star image.

I don’t think that true about ranbir what u say.. he is a I industry kid and always had a heavy PR support and paid media support. He has no star pull.. but is a good actor. Him and Alia are just always overhyped by the PR but ground level noy very popular among audiences. Atleast Ranbir is good.. Alia completely mediocre
@@Besties591 I agree Alia is overhyped but not Ranbir. His stardom is well deserved and well earned.
Oh i love this topic. Glad you tap this Jammy.
Every super star had a different reason for being loved by the audience. With Rajesh Khanna, he was seen as a lover boy who is gentle and caring which started with Aradhana, with Amitabh Bachchan, he was the guy who the struggling youth could relate to so he became the angry young man which started with Deewar. With SRK, he was seen as every mother’s son, every sister’s brother and every girl’s dream which started with DDLJ. The problem with stardom is that now audience can actually know the personality of actors or different degrees of their personality, so it’s harder to picture them with something different or visualize an aura. I see people claim that Ranbir Kapoor would be the next superstar but with his personality traits that go viral on Insta or Reddit, the audience can’t imagine him to have an aura that can be loved
True
👏👏👏
Social media is a boon and a curse, you are right, there was a time when the audience wanted an actor to have more screen time so they started to watch the same movie again and again..
But now a days you'll know what your favourite actor is doing on a daily basis which kills that excitement..
If you watch your favourite actor going through a lavish cars and attending crazy parties who just got into the fame zone because of his performance/ character as a poor guy in a movie....
Then audience hit the reality check that whatever was on the screen stays in the theatre.
People on the internet are snowflakes that's why they don't like Ranbir
To be honest, these people who cry about rk on insta or Reddit never go to watch any movie. They just pass comments on Instagram.
I sometimes wonder how the likes of Shahrukh salman khan will cope with the end of their stardom, and them not being leading men given they are the last superstars india will ever produce
They will die the very next day when they come to know that they are no longer "STARS" 😂😂😂
There should be a sense of realisation for Bollywood stars same as it happens with cricketers. Sachin was a superstar, people used to leave their work to watch Sachin bat, absolute hero of that time. He enjoyed his success but when he went away he never struggled to get those things back. Sachin is not the talk of the town anymore, people are watching and idolising current cricketers , I don't think Sachin is finding any difficulty in it. Actors should learn from many cricketers in this sense
Shahrukh And Salman have amassed huge amount of wealth..Shahrukh is part businessman..His production house is one of the best in business and he is the owner of kkr franchise which has 5 cricket teams..I still think Srk can play mass roles for atleast 5-7 years more later he will start acting in roles like BigB did.

The dilemma between being a star and an actor or artist and final choice in that will dictate longevity of everyone at the end of the day
It's time that people should really understand star culture is nothing but waste. Just appreciate for their work but follow your own way of lifestyle. Stick to your family and friends. Open your eyes. Jay Jagannath 🙏 🗿🖤

@@TriedRefusedProductions Yes but also it's really satisfying when you get something after working hard for it.😅
@@TriedRefusedProductionsOne key reason behind celebrity worship is that common people's life is very hectic in our country as compared to developed nations. You have to be rich in order to even enjoy full personal freedom.

He had also mentioned how his works and contribution on the Hindi cinema will be gradually fade away through the time with his current fans and audiences. I like srk personally. Though I don't watch any Bollywood movies but I truly appreciate his honesty and his open minded perspective on life. The man has achieved more than anything in life. Good for him.
@@BauklebenHes no in 60s. SRK is 58
The most disappointing thing is govinda still hasn't changed as a person and a professional it makes me disappointed that what he achieved as an actor during the mid 80s-90s with his comedic films. Also him signing so many films at an Young age.
He still craves for being a lead hero just look at his TH-cam channel its a meme material totally. No wonder why every director refused to give him offers later on . He still lacks professionalism. And still has a bad behavior.
Also during his political run he did nothing. He had the lowest attendance during parliamentary meetings.
He is himself the destroyer of his career. And blames industry.
The difference between Govinda that I loved a lot in his 80s and 90s and SRK, for example is that SRK is so much beyond the characters that he plays in his films. He has fans that don't really like most if his films, what they love is SRK's personality itself. When I watch Govinda's interviews and some videos about his behaviour, his self obsession, I'm so disappointed. But still to me on screen they both have that energy, easy going manner and charm. But again SRK who wants to stay on the top at 58 gets up and does workout, keeps himself in great shape so he can still be relevant as a leading hero. But look at Govinda, what has he done to stay on the top? Nothing. He took weight, he complains all the time, there's no continuous self-improvement, he doesn't evolve or aspire to something new. I cannot imagine him as a leading hero any more. And I'm sorry to say that because he had the capacity to be one even at his age.
I don't about others because i am not from the era of Rajesh Khanna but what i saw after the release of Kaho Na Pyaar and the craze for Hrithik in the whole country was just unimaginable. He can do thrillers easily. He can do superhero movies 100%. He can do negative shade roles 100%. He can even make comedy movies. He can do content driven movies easily.Romance, ofc not😅
Srk has that eternal stardom, so I don’t think so that he needs to play supporting role, even when he is 80.
His movies flopped, cuz of high budget. Literally zero was a 200cr movie. Still, it did a good 190 cr ww business.
So his stardom never went away.
As he already proved everybody wrong by making a comeback(in terms of big BO numbers)which not even AB or Dilip could do, he might prove everyone wrong by being the biggest for eternity. And I definitely want to see him do this. Like who doesn’t want India’s global icon to keep shining brightly for eternity.
How much do you know about AB's comeback. Do you know the craze When Sehahenshah was released in 1988, if you were to know that craze , even 3 of the best of comebacks today wouldn't equalise that let alone overtake.
How you millennials just come across with tall claims without analysis with such blatant flawed confidence is what amazes me
Possibly one of the in-depth analysed and well documented video from Jammy. Thank you
We need more videos like these, it was like an excerpt from the digital discourse. The subject matter was so academic - loved it. Though in India Cinema is created with a commercial aim but still there is a need for conversation like these because some so-called celebs have become too delusional and the ignorance is visible in their words and actions. I hope you can avail more creative freedom while being elaborate instead of being cryptic with the fear of cancel culture (something that has been a success only with small scale or independent creators rather than the celebs).
I stand by SRK when he said "I'm last of The Stars" ❤❤

I really hope we all give up our obsession with stars and focus on the directors and technicians who work much harder than these stars. It was really sad that when a terrific film like Merry Christmas released in Sakranti, it lost most of its shows because of Captain Miller, Guntur Kaarmam and a Darshan film. People must choose to decide to go for a film seeing the director rather than the so called leading men.
That will never happen sadly....
That should never hapoen
Why not what's wrong with giving importance to directors ,writers costume I mean yes there profession will not or is not same as an actor but they should also recognized in public eye bcs I'm sorry this people are backbone of a flim or movie industry why should only faces of project should only be celebrated
I love how well written this video jammy
The points were sharp and easy to follow while also being thought evoking....amazing
i think this topic deserves to have subtopics. there are plenty of reasons why stardom would no longer be something that can be achieved. listing a few being the growing awareness of mediocrity of films, growing parasocial relationships with literally anyone and everyone while also having a cancel/ outrage culture, rise of ott platforms, also bad scripts and acting being more frequent, growing political unrest weirdly also has started to have an impact on actors. i think overall the concept of art vs the artist also highly contributes to what a person might achieve and for how long.
Only srk can make the audience watch mediocre movies that's for sure after the release of pathan and jawan. So he really is the last of the stars
As an Indian, I believe more in Turkish stardom now where their actors are becoming globally famous with their dramas without having to worry about any box office numbers.
The box office results will be volatile, but the digital content won't be as much.
Many Turkish actors now enjoy more global stardom just with one or two shows than an Indian actor does with his multiple successful films.
And I am also seeing for last few years is that drama stardom lasts much longer than movie stardom for an actor nowadays (started by South Korea and Turkey).
We Indians have to understand is that theatre films will not have monopoly in determining an actor's global stardom anymore just like it once did.
One of the biggest bug bears I have is Ranbir Kapoor is the ‘next superstar’ like he has been one for the past 15 years.
His films weren't really working from 2014 until Sanju.
Because it's his script selection which makes him a ot of complications because he is loved as romantic hero so it's very difficult to see him as an action hero
I just want to thank jammy for educating me and improving my English ❤❤❤❤❤
in all of bollywood's history-domestically the biggest stars might be SRK,BIG B or Dillip kumar. But when we talk about global stardom you know no one comes close to SRK. It is just an undeniable fact
WrONG. Amitabh Bchchan was the biggest star in a time of no social media, cell phone, etc.

Nice that you added subtle music to your videos. It will engage your audience more.
Change is the only consistent nothing and noone is permanent but till the time u have to shine shine brighter and make space in heart of all I wonder after 90's stars and 2000's like Hritik and ranbir who will be the next superstar? Time will tell that but I don't find any 😂 if talk about female then after deepika or alia I don't think others have that of stardom and ofcourse there is shortage of female superstar after deepika
The reason why 90s batch has dominated the box-office like no one else is that they've always remained relevant and adapted themselves in each decade. My parents, me who born in 98 and my sister born in 2007 all has seen them working as leading star and still in top of their game. Even if someone was born in 2018 and is currently exposed to the world of Indian cinema they'd see Shah Rukh after Pathaan and others being his competitors as the biggest stars of the industry and curiously explore their best works, unlike someone like Varun or Ranveer for that manner whose name appears just when they're promoting movies. That's why they're still the only boniafied superstars! They've hooked on to the "superstar" status from the 90s while others are just fighting for a "big star" status.
Excellent video Jammy!
Great Informative Video Jammy By revealing the Dark side of Stardom
SRK is clearly the different breed in the bollywood superstar list....he will always be huge
I think the journey of Rajesh khanna should be discussed in alone video and please read the book by Gautam Dark star 🌟 n Rajesh khanna. Then u will able to understand cinema in terms of business.
loving the new thumbs!!
Loved this video! Great analysis!
0:03 their faces after getting to know the reality 🤭💀
Rishi Kapoor was the one who returned signing amount to the producers of those movies who casted him as hero and realised that he should play character roles
Really?😮
Love the video n topic❤
You did a short walkthrough on history of stardom in Hindi. This topic needs be explored more.
Next you should make a video about actors who learnt that the tides were changing and changed along with it like saif ali khan, anil kapoor doing age appropriate roles, shahid changing his filmography, etc.
This may upset a lot of people, but i watch an SRK or Salman movie and i see acting. I mean, i am aware of the fact that i am watching an actor acting. I watch Ranbir kapoor and it feels like i am watching him living his life without knowing a camera is hidden. Thats what makes a true actor.
Tbh, SRK or Salman doesn't seem to be serious about acting. They are more concerned about giving big blockbusters through big commercial movies 😅
Is that why Ranbir needed a South director to finally give a 500+ crore movie@@AshishKumar-ui9wy
@sabeermuhammad5313 that's what acting is supposed to be like Ranbir Kapoor did with his character of Ranvijay in Animal.
Every next gen of superstars learnt from the previous gen. AB adjusted to the new world, 90s superstar kept coming back and sticking to their core fans. It will be even harder for the next gen superstar as the current audience are more hard to please.
Even Hritik Roshan saw complete downfall and called him the next Kumar Gaurav. But, his father helped and relaunched him through Koi Mil Gaya.
Take a break of 4 years and assume ur on the same position
No one can pull it off except you’re SRK ❤

They don't know AB and they don't wish to know and analyse before they speak. They think that with SRK they don't need to learn anything about anyone else.
If they were to watch Bachchan, Dilip Sahab and Sanjeev Saahab perform the same roles in a much mature way they will faint but they won't take that route because that's hard work@@pratibhakushwaha6491

Till 2035, I really dont think the fab 5 of 90s batch* + Hrithik Roshan are going to be dethroned. Stars like Ranbir and Ranveer might rule bollywood alongside with them. But honestly I really dont think so that the 90s batch + Hrithik Roshan, are going to lose their relevancy atleast till 2035.
*90s batch - Akshay, Salman, Ajay, Aamir and Shahrukh.
The problem with hrithik is that he never found good competitors like the 90s star which always keep each other relevant. The competitor he had found was Jr b and John who themselves has a hard time staying relevant.
I think by 2035, the 90s batch will also start playing supporting roles, as they all will be nearing the age of 70.
@@Anonymous-bf5fk that is debatable now because mammooty , rajnikath and kamal Hasan has broken that barrier.

I agree. Amitabh Bachchan is unparalleled and an enigma. That kind of megastardom comes once in 1000 years.
Star of millennium...no one can ever touch that pinnacle.....
Amitabh Bachchan's longevity can only be attributed to his flexible mind and self awareness unlike his contemporaries who held on to this delusion of always being the leading man romancing women's in their teens😅
But the point his Amitabh wasn't able to maintain his stardom post 1985..While Srk has maintained his stardom for almost 30 years and counting..He has built an empire from nothing..Red chillies production,Kkr franchise-5 cricket teams.

@@slayer81 Yup, then man learned his lesson and accepted the reality to move on and do more supporting roles or character roles
@@jayesh1643 There's a huge difference between that era and today's era where these aged actor's are supported with great make-up, cgi and post production enhancement, and ofcourse the efforts taken by actor's like Srk to maintain their fitness. Most actor's like Srk, Aamir, Salman, Akshay in their late 50s look better than Amit ji in his 40s.
Recently director Priyadarshan gave his reaction after watching Premalu, there he said that our era is over (though he is still making films and has a promising line up as well as many directors of his age are successful like Mani Ratnam and Joshiy). I like his humble nature that time that he always praised young talents.❤🧡💙💜
Waise there are timeless stars like Anil Kapoor, Mammootty or Mohanlal who accepted aging and did character roles keeping the ego side. I am also a budding filmmaker and I have insecurities like fear of failure, downfall and bankruptcy.

Himesh Reshammiya will redefine stardom with Badass Ravikumar.
Yes krk is the next superstar with his debuted blockbuster deshdrohi
Sharukh khan is last of the stars
You might hate me for my personal opinion but I feel, Along with Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh And Vicky Kaushal also deserve the superstardom.
Furthermore, I feel actors like Anshuman Pushkar and Gagan Arora are still stuck in the OTT space. They deserve at least one chance in Bollywood.
Would we see a female superstar anytime soon?
We had Nargis, Waheeda Rahman, Hema Malini and Sridevi.
@@karthikanair5162 in that category.. I only see Alia Bhatt
Kartik may be the next superstar. He just needs to use social media less. Ranveer Singh would've been a superstar if not for his social media presence and how he goes to random events every weekend. And who can forget the fashion!
Yes, perhaps we find it hard to connect to a character (and then a star) nowadays. I just realized in more than a decade, I have seen many good bollywood movies- amazing and touching , but 3 idiots is the only one which come out of the screen and moved to many avenues of my life
Le de ke Hritik par phauchna hi hai.
