Poison Spyder Defender XC (High-Line) Install

  • A video of installing my Poison Spyder Defender XC (High-Line) front fenders on my 2004 Jeep Wrangler TJ. This project was very time consuming and a pain, but the end result is well worth it. I had a friend repaint my hood; if you are not repainting, make sure you use touch up paint on any bare steel to avoid rust. Fabrication is needed to get everything to mount in the engine bay again, but it is not difficult. I mounted my horn using the existing bracket and bolt by threading it into an unused threaded insert that the stock fenders bolted into. I also had to pull back a wire out of the loom to mount my windshield washer reservoir further back. I used a weather proof plug to solder/wire in the blinkers. This project is very doable, but time consuming. If you have any questions or need any advice, leave a comment. Thanks!

    When you installed the fenders and inner fenders, did you do the inner fenders first or the fenders?

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did fenders firsg. Then assemble inner fenders, then bolt to fenders and self tapping screw to the grill.

      I actually sold the jeep over 3 years ago. I mounted mine underneath the battery, on the aluminum inner fender.

    I’m about to buy front and rear position spurred fenders do I have to respray them or can I keep them the bare steel because I don’t want it to rust and idk if leaving them bare will make them rust

    Really nice job! I was on the fence about ordering these but think I might now! Is that the zone 4.25 lift?

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeeping.Net I'm very happy with them! And yes that's the zone 4.25" lift I installed a few years ago. I'm happy with that as well especially for the price, but the shocks seem to corrode easy. That is the only down fall to the kit. I have the metalcloak front adjustable track bar paired with it

    Are these 5" tapered front defenders? I'm from the UK and importing some from the US!

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These were the 3" XC defenders. The high-line version that you have to cut the hood for, but is the full fender replacement. They were great! Really made the jeep stand out.

    Awesome Beast ! Few questions how does Bed lining the flares hold up over time , did you paint the inner fenders I love the look but worried about oxidation and what hood latch you using lol . Watched your vids a few time great work .

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      derek loria the bed liner holds up amazing! Scraped the rocksliders over a rock a few times and didn’t even scuff it. Way more durable than paint and powder, which is why I choose to bedline. I left inner fenders bars like most and hold up great. I am using hood pins from poly performance, I think autocraft? And thanks a lot!

    Love your work brother!
    Great looking jeep!
    I just bought my wife a TJ and would like to do the same thing
    Would you please send me a link or tell me where you bought this flat highliner kit? And does it come with the inner metal mesh/underliner?
    Thank you

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I ordered this kit from northridge4x4. Took some fabrication to make everything fit under the hood but it all worked out well. This kit does not come with the inner fenders, you can buy solid or vented aluminum inner fenders. The vented will cost just a little extra. You should be able to find the inner fenders easily on the website but here is the link. www.northridge4x4.com/part/fenders/14-02-093-poison-spyder-defender-xc-high-line-fenders-steel?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh7S9177L1gIVDzNpCh0XQAOKEAQYASABEgI7M_D_BwE

    Question. I bought a smitty built front tube fenders. Will the stock fender HAVE to come out when installing the poison spider XC inner fenders?

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will just have to remove the stock inner fenders before installing your new poison spyder inner fenders.

  • @603vettman

    Did u say that u rhino lined your bumpers? If so , could u give me the details of doing it? And the light switches in your jeep, did the lights come with those switches? Thanks

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      603vettman the rear bumper just has por-15 and spray paint on it. The front bumper is extreme liner which is pretty much linex, sprays on at a very hot temperature and dries within seconds. This is the best way to do Bedliner but is the most expensive and a shop must do it. On my fenders and rock sliders, I have monstaliner which is the best DIY Bedliner. I will be upgrading bumpers next winter and will do Bedliner on it. The switches I ordered trough OTRTTW which is where sPOD gets their switches from. I now moved all my switches to the newly installed sPOD. the spot where they used to be doesn’t have anything hooked up to the switches anymore.

    Hi does the hood need to be cut to install these fenders?

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes because these are the XC fenders. You can also get the regular style that does not require cutting the hood.

    Good looking rig. Trading a guy for these XC fenders (new) with "negative flare" this week. I also have a silver TJ. I saw where you said you have a 4.25" suspension lift..any body lift? I'm running 35s on a 4" with a 3" body. The body will be dropped down to a 1.25". Just want to get an idea of how much gap I'm going to have lol

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheAlmighty Tuna I have a 3” suspension, 1.25” body, and 1” motor mount lift. 1.25” body lift is the highest you’d want to go on a body lift for functionality and looks. Your gap between frame and body will look exactly like mine with a 1.25”

    • @thealmightytuna3239
      @thealmightytuna3239 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeep Moto I have the 1.25" lift, just need to install it. I was trying to get a good idea of gap I will have. Total I'll be running 5.25" lift with 35s...shouldn't look to crazy lol

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheAlmighty Tuna shouldn’t look bad. I will be putting 35s on a while after I do my axle swap. I think the setup you will have will look proportional, you’ll have plenty of room for wheel travel, while still looking proportional.

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Siggman I sanded smooth and had my hood repainted because of the cuts for hood pins, fenders, and hood Louver. Spray paint and clear coat was finally wearing off on the hood vent cuts so I decided how’s a good time to get it painted. I used this on the edge www.amazon.com/MATCC-Guards-Rubber-Protector-Protection/dp/B01BWKCUAO

    if you have AC what did you do to make the line fit? also what are your plans for the air box as a more permanent solution? thanks -Joe

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Homa I do not have AC, but from what I read, the lines just need some persuasion to fit. You don't have to do any modifications to them or anything, google images will show an idea of where the lines fit. About the air box, I believe everyone that uses the OEM air box still uses zip ties like I did. Cold air intakes don't provide a benefit for this engine and they are spendy. I do know there are other solutions to this besides zip ties. Some people install more compact air boxes that work fine as well. Poison spyder instructions recommend installing a cone style air filter such as K&N filters.

    • @josephhoma1206
      @josephhoma1206 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the quick reply. I know i dont want to go to a k&n style filter so I am hoping to make a bracket for the factory box and if i cant do that then ill go with a ford windstar box that some people run in the cowl

    • @GarretHofer
      @GarretHofer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joseph Homa I've seen a few setups run through the cowl. Bleepin Jeep just did an install on one. But honestly, zip ties on the factory air box attached to the hood support rods is extremely sturdy and most people do that. I'd definitely start with that rout until you get bored and want to do another project. Let me know if you have any questions or need any tips, I'd be glad to help!
