The Number 1 car was the only car used on the show. There were three additional cars built with fiberglass bodies pulled from a mold that was created from the original. They were used for shows and exhibitions. The Number 4 car was also an exhibition dragster. The fifth car was obtained by George Barris, but built by someone else. It was a steel bodied, highly modified 1958 Ford Thunderbird. It was close in appearance, but not close enough for me to have put a bat on the side. There was no sixth car.

Back in 1983, Bob Butts of "Fantasy Cars" bought no. 5 car from Barris (mashed under two other cars out back) and restored it. I was able to drive it "across the street" to take pictures. And yes, only the modified Futura show car was used on the show. Barris had to make the others to satisfy the car show circuit. One had "batfuzz" on the body.

@@paulm.newitt3246 Cool story. I've seen a couple of the show cars, one with fuzz and one without. The fuzz was an easy way to hide fine cracks in the fiberglass. I don't think any of the cars have fuzz anymore.

The original batmobile didn't have a full around steering wheel.. from the 9 oclock position to the 3 oclock position was cut off

Jay Dee below is correct... the #1 car which was made from the Futura Concept car was the only Batmobile used when filming the entire series. with the exception of one scene in the "Contaminated Cowl" episode, in which the #4 car was on screen for about 2 seconds, sitting in the batcave, in the background of the shot.. The Futura was a steel, car not fiberglass as Randall says below... It was designed int 1954 built in 1955 in Turin Italy. and toured the world as a concept car at the new cars shows and events. It was used in the movie "It Started With A Kiss" starring Debby Reynolds and Glenn Ford, in 1959. It sat in Barris' back lot from then until it was converted to the Batmobile. The other 3 replicas that Barris built were for appearances at cars shows and such, with the #4 being built specifically to do exhibition runs at Drag Strips around the country... It was hauled to events and driven by Wild Bill Shrewsberry .. The fabled #5 car was built by a fan and purchased by Barris and also used for appearances mostly on the east side of the country.. There was no #6 Barris car.. The Batmobile that is currently at Barris Kustom City is a Bob Butts replica, which Barris Purchased. The #1 Batmobile is in Fairfax, Virginia, in the private collection of Dave Anderson.. My best guess is that the car in this video was build by Don Currie in BC Canada.

Met Adam West at convention centre car show about 1983 or 1984? and got autographed (pre autographed/massed produced photo) picture of him and the batmobile. The only part he really signed was to my pal Mark. That may have been part of the photo and all he signed was my name. Have took a real photo of him and my 3 year old sister. She says she still remembers it.

I have the same pre autographed photo. Obtained in person in Denver in 1985. A World of Wheels event. A Batmobile was close by. I asked Adam West to sign it "Doug Stewart in Denver" and he did. No one else in line. Usually people ask how do you spell your last name? Since it's either Stewart or Stuart, like Gloria Stuart, old Rose in the movie Titanic. But since he signed it correctly I just said thank you and left. Adam West didn't say anything. Why is still a mystery? Of course it would have been great to chat with him, since nobody else was waiting in line. I still have the autographed photo. It's been carefully stored over the 39 years and is a very treasured keepsake.

I worked on one of these in Chicago many years ago. It had been covered in felt and every time it was shown a crew had to go around and pick the lintel off and run lint rollers over it. This car had a 66 Ford Galaxy chassis with a 427 auto. Some one crushed one of the tube header pipes and I ran pipes from the collector back to the flame throwers.

My daughters and I met and spoke with Mr. BARRIS at the Detroit Autorama in 2001... he ALLOWED us behind the velvet ropes to sit in the Batmobile...he then turned on all the flashing lights and allowed me to push and activate the "bat beam" ... we then took pictures with my 2 girls with Mr. BARRIS in his iconic yellow coat !! Along side of the Batmobile !!! WE then met Adam West and he was absolutely marvelous to me and the girls.... 20 years ago. Seems like yesterday.

There was one of the 1966 Batmobiles at FanExpoCanada 2016 in Toronto; for $20 Canadian (about $15 US at the time) you got to sit in it & have several photos taken. Of course I did it! It was similar to this one, with the round speedometer, but I do not recall seeing any of the blue colored switches nor that smaller gauge on the dash, and the Batphone was in much better shape. I did bang the back of my head getting into it though.
