- "Michael Collins" is an Irish Ballad about the life of the famous Irish revolutionary and politician Michael Collins. August 22nd 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of his demise in an ambush near Béal na Bláth where he was shot and killed. Although his position as a general in the Free State Army makes him controversial among Anti-Treatyite circles, it cannot be denied that his actions during the Tan war were crucial in the bringing about of an independent Irish state.

Michael was true Irish and wanted the best for the country he loved. He was a hero to my father who lived in Ireland under English rule.
All the men at the GPO gave their lives willingly and should never be forgotten.
The GPO was in a sense a folly, but something had to be done and no one seemed to be stepping up. When they executed them, the evil being faced was magnified. It showed the moral bankruptcy of the English authorities. Hearts around the world mourned, as far away as Australia where a huge Irish diaspora had settled.

Your same "short fuse" caused the English to hoist Irish babies on pikes under Cromwell, to provided relief during the Great Famine on the condition the Irish renounce the Catholic Faith for Protestant heresy, to hunt priests and bishops like dogs, to strip the Irish of land ownership down to 20% and put it in the hands of Protestant landlords who controlled 80% To hell with your "short fuse".

I have ancestry from the great land of Ireland, and from all over the British isles, Wales and Scotland in particular, where so many have been persecuted by the empire just as the Irish as well. I'm proud of my ancestry, and given that both sides of my family came after WW2, my mother's father's side only being here for as far back as her grandfather, they may have even fought by Collins' side. Michael Collins may very well be the reason I'm alive in the first place due to his work for the Irish people and their freedom. He's a hero of the people, Irish and otherwise. He's an inspiration to us all.

he was an honest hero of Ireland who did what he could to get Ireland free even if it meant statehood under dominion of England but he thought hat making Irish first a free state like Canada would give Ireland the liberty to be free and he died simply wanting to speak with an old friend Eamon Delevera and was ambushed by dev's own soldier he died wanting peace and while it took till after ww2 Ireland at least the southern part became free...he left a girl he was days from marrying...and wanted peace....and he died trying to acheive it....may you never be forgotten the hero of Ireland Micheal Collins

I would say they wouldn’t be fond of him. I’m not a Marxist but I am a republican socialist and he created a 26 county state backed by the British government to kill his fellow comrades. He created an Irish state that benefited bourgeois capitalists rather than the people off Ireland the working class that keep this country running and even in todays terms Ireland is in a crisis when It comes to housing and rent. Ultimately, he betrayed the 1919 democratic programme and everything that it is to be republican.

I hate the way De Valera is painted as the villain, and all the leaders who were executed in The Rising would've all been Anti-Treaty. Collins was more or less Mary-Plunkett's assistant, and he wouldn't have been proud of what Collins did. So I don't understand why Collins is the hero, and De Valera isn't.
