When this show was taped, Elvis had just passed away. It was the height of the disco era and one of the greatest year in the history of rock and roll. 1977.
They never could accuse us of taking ourselves too seriously after looking at this "Great Pretender" choreography. Once the TV series re-defined us from rock group to cartoon, I always thought we had more in common with "Hee Haw" than any other TV show.
When I was little, I knew of Sha Na Na, but, to my child's eyes, they looked like they were ready to do somebody harm, or at least to mug and rob someone. The tv show made them a lot easier to enjoy, and I'm still a fan today.😌
Oh yes. He handled the bulk of the Elvis songs, and he was great at it. You've probably seen Santini singing "It's Now or Never", charming a beautiful young lady in the audience...while her boyfriend(?) looked on with an impatient smirk(lol). We all know that she would've been better off with Dr. Scott Powell😊.
I saw them in September 1974 in Memphis. I was 18. Over the years I saw a lot of great concerts and I enjoyed seeing these guys as much as anybody else. They were some seriously talented people. I think they rivaled the original artists on a lot of songs they did.
I WILL FOREVER LOVE "GREASE", AND ALL of SHA-NA-NA's SONGS ON "GREASE"! :-) MY FAV. FROM THEM IS/WILL ALWAYS BE, "THOSE MAGIC CHANGES"; NO ONE CAN OUT DO THE WAY THAT JOHNNY CONTARDO SANG IT! :-D :-) THESE GUYS ARE ALL TRUE ARTISTS AND REAL MUSICIANS WITH REAL TALENT! :-D BUT oh my Lord, PLEASE BURN those gold outfits, LMBO! :-) :-P

Santini was my favorite to watch in concert, especially in the early days........I loved the way the band looked after one another to set up the next song.......that took a lot of practice I am sure, not to mention the choreography of each song. One of the problems with the TV show was the choreography paled in comparison to the concert choreography. I am sure it's because there were so many songs in a short time.......but for someone who had never been to a Sha Na Na concert in person, well, they are not seeing the full genius and power of the "Greatest Show on Earth"!
Lennie singing at the end... damn what a voice, and a great musician as well... they're all so talented, but i reckon Bowser, Johnny and Lennie were my faves

Denny, you couldn't have taken a few seconds after taking Santini's jacket off to take Johnnys off, too? Just sayin' :) In one of their early concerts, Johnny's the one who helped Santini off with his jacket, and then started playing with it like a bullfighter's cape LOL! :)
I think Elvis could have taken some lessons from Santini in the moves department. Of course Johnny is off the wall brilliant as a ballad singer and I'm sure Elvis would have approved. For myself, I like Johnny's version better.
Last I checked, Jocko, Donny and Screamin' Scott are still performing together with new line-ups. Bowzer reunited with Johnny and Lenny at various times. And there's Scott Powell & The Fabulous Owls. The spirit of Sha Na Na is alive and well, even if they're not all performing together(and some of them have gone home to be with The Lord).😌

I miss this t.v. show. They were so talented. I was so into the 50s in the 70s (maybe because the music was better).
Can never forget them!!! One of the best groups during that time!!!
Loved their show. Soooo much fun to watch! 😎😍

I loved Sha Na Na! I even saw them at the Ohio State Fair. Had a great time. Such a talented group!!
This is absolutely awesome! What a superb tribute to the King of Rock n Roll ELVIS Presley. Two Thumbs Up!
What a crew! Tremendous talent. Screaming Scott, Dirty Dan, Chico, and, of course, Santini, don't always get the aclaim that they deserve.
Apparently Santini went on to become an orthopedic surgeon after he left Sha Na na...eg. of more than just musical talent!😎

What a fantastic group they were. All of them were talented. I'm so glad these videos exist.
I was born in the 50's, loved Elvis and what a great tribute!
Never got to see Elvis, that was a major disapointment, but loved these guys!
I don't think there is a group past, present or future that respects Elvis's music more than Sha Na Na did.

When I saw Sha Na Na in concert Andy Kaufman was their opening act and Andy's Elvis just couldn't be beat. ☺
Wow, that must've be brilliant, I love Andy Kaufman, rumour has it Kaufman was the first to impersonate Elvis while he was alive?

I loved watching all of the guys, but I favored Jocko. I had my picture taken with him in 1980 in Charlotte.

a little side comment. I much prefer the gold suits with the black tops. I just really liked that look so much better.
Yeah, but the all gold ones were tighter......chuckle
well I don't know the exact dates but before the tv show there was no tops

«The Great Pretender» was not an Elvis song. The Platters had a huge hit with the song, before Freddie Mercury revived it later.
Santini------------Scott Powell------------did the best Elvis !
I love this song from Shan Na NA.❤❤❤❤❤😂❤❤😂
I think Elvis could have taken some lessons from Santini in the moves department. Of course Johnny is off the wall brilliant as a ballad singer and I'm sure Elvis would have approved. For myself, I like Johnny's version better.
Does anybody know if they are still performing?

Desde que tu me olvidaste
un nuevo lugar encontre
que queda al final de una calle donde solo llorare
Es un sitio muy solo, si muy solo
donde muy triste morire
Y aunque mucha gente habia
solo casi me encontre
y el humo de sus cigarros apenas dejaba ver
La luz era rara, muy muy rara
no pude evitarlo y llore
Hoy corre el luto y el llanto
la gente se viste mal
se encuentran muy solo y tristes
y en mi tragedia me acompañaran
Se encuentran muy tristes muy muy tristes
y nadie me va a ayudar
Asi si es que no regresas
muy pronto yo morire
para el resto de mi vida
ay, yo te aguardare
Me siento muy triste, si muy triste
muy triste
hasta morir
did you know that Donny trips on the cord and bowzer laughs at him
Santini's mike wire got caught on Donny's leg and that's why he was laughing.
