That was a Massasauga Rattlesnake. Don't get too close! Rare sighting these days, so consider yourselves lucky. You'll only find them in 4 spots in Ontario, the Bruce Peninsula, Wiarton, Massasauga Provincial Park and the Wainfleet Bog. I've spent a lot of time hunting in the Wainfleet Bog and have been on numerous canoe trips in The Massasuga and I have never seen one in person.
