Dealing with Apple made Luke's soul leave his body for a moment but he was able to catch it
Linus wouldnt have...
He's ascending
I watched 90% of the video, until he fell, I didn't realise he was a floating head......well played Luke.....well played
@@Designsecrets I didnt realize at first either. He looked somehow 'off' but couldnt pin it at first lol
I feel that way with juggling multiple accounts, iTunes shite, and iPhone shite... I can't imagine how they must feel. I'm pretty much set on not buying Apple anything from this point on, even if that means not having a phone.
Years of working with Linus has trained Luke to catch technology.
It's because Linus wasn't there that he caught it 😜
Actually his midwife training taught him how to catch dirty, slippery things
It shows how horribly attentive I am that I didn't notice Luke was a cutout until he ascended
oh jeez I didn't realize ever after he ascended. I thought they had done a good job of putting him into the scene like they did with Linus but lol no linus was actually in the scene and Luke was a floating head
what is wrong with me
same lol
*inattentive
I literally thought they did that as a joke and that their live editing skills were insane
You and I both
6:51 Luke: "I think our app is still up on the store.. Oh wow"
Gets beamed up by Scotty*
To me, I thought he got sucked into a gravity well from Halo.
Tim Cook took him
@@trayner just 30% of him. The rest now exists solely on the float-plain.
I thought Luke was trying to stand up and was confused as to why he stood up mid sentence.
Former iOS dev here... Apple representatives not knowing how their system works is surprisingly common. They've never seen the developer side of the UI and have no clue.
i think that that's pretty off-brand for apple
@@psychodelogen.9694 is it? I own everything from Apple and some of the things they sometimes do seem like they never used their devices
@@psychodelogen.9694 that's literally what is happening in real-time in this video... lol
@@psychodelogen.9694 I mean, none of their “geniuses” at the genius bar have ever taken apart an electronic, let alone repaired one. That’s why they just replace your broken device and chuck it as e-waste.
@@psychodelogen.9694 Nah that's definitely on brand. I mean their repair techs at the Genius Bar can't even do basic electronics repair,b they just replace parts.
Holy hell it took me 3 minutes to realise Luke was not actually sitting there
The metaverse is upon us
I was wondering what was off on him until I realised it was poor greenscreening.
Same but I didn't realize until the camera fell lol
Did they mention why he's not physically there?
It took me 5 haha
The irony of a company legendary for its tax avoidance charging 30% of people’s transactions is too rich.
The only ones allowed to tax anyone aara Apple it seems. That company really needs to be taken down several million pegs.
@@xmlthegreat I love their products but I absolutely agree with you. Several million pegs is the right way to put it.
lets double dutch sandwich this app and locate floatplane in ireland for no reason in particular.
@@esoel Several trillion.
@@AsbestosMuffins App paradises, eh?
I think it’s funny that Luke still has a physical laptop and chair. Even though he is just cropped there
I didn't even realize
Watching Linus react, it feels like we are literally watching business occurring.
The panic in his eyes when he heard Tim Apple got carbon copied
Luke takes Floatplane too seriously, he even floats above the chair
Hmm. Could you get around the whole not mentioning the subscription on floatplane by: 1. allow them to create account but no access on the app. 2. tell them they need to confirm the account from the e-mail sent. 3. The e-mail for confirming the account creation sending them to the floatplane subscription page. This would be a pain for new app users but could clear any confusion.
If apple deems it a bypass, their app is kicked off the AppStore. It’s really not worth it to try and get around the system, just wait for apple to implement 3rd party payments if anything
You can't. You can NOT DIRECT THEM TO A WEBSITE FOR ANY REASON basically lol.
If apple finds out that youve done this. They will black list your app period.
didn't the epic lawsuit rule that they had to allow apps to mention that other forms of payment at least exist?
@@technoturnovers7072 Not within the app.
The result of the Epic lawsuit was that you could have a separate website that the app does not reference, and a user may randomly decide to go onto your website after finding it on Google, and a user on that website after “randomly” finding it can then use that website to buy stuff that appears in the app.
This is why I pray the Open App Markets Act passes in US Congress
Cyber criminals would like to show their gratitude to you.
@@imaginarystranger1974 Including all developers
@@imaginarystranger1974 If you're unable to download something without using common sense, you can still stay on official stores.
@@AppleMenace You mean all developers that operate mobile online casinos and gacha games? Oh, they sure will be grateful for more income.
@@adenrius You overestimate abilities of your average mobile phone user.
Most mobile developers know what pain you're going through.
*More iOS devs, I guess
I had my app rejected 3 TIMES from the Play Store for using a permission that it doesn’t even use. Google’s support team is horrific. They take 1 month to respond, and their response to your appeal is just a copy of the reason your app was rejected. These companies give 0 shits about developers.
This is the reason I'm staying well away from mobile development. Stuff like this. (and other reasons, for example the ridiculously locked down environment.)
Linus just reached another level of dropping stuff. He is now able to drop things across the net, nobody is safe any more!
Couldn't Floatplane just have an error message when someone tries to subscribe on Apple devices to contact customer service?
I think they’ll still call it a bypass
Apple is really, really strict about this stuff. Last year they blocked an app because it linked to its official website and that website had a donate button. For Apple that already counts as bypassing the Apple payment system. It also doesn't help that they're inconsistent at enforcing their own rules. Like when they threatened to ban an app because of its name even though that app name had been accepted by Apple for over 5 years.
The joys of quasi-monopolies.
No you aren't allowed to tell the users why they can't subscribe... asinine.
6:52 "I must go. My people need me."
Yeah remember that debacle with the metal bats we were talking about? Where exactly did we leave then at again? Just out of curiosity
Luke: *Talking about the app *
Apple: *Abducts Luke*
It took me far too long to realize that Luke isn't actually sitting in the chair. Good job, LMG team!
6:53 completely broke the immersion
Yeahhh. I didn’t realize he wasn’t there till it fell despite the cut out being there the entire video
@@Iffythegreat now I notice it 24/7
Luke had to go, his planet needed him.
And what about droid attack on wookiees?
In an ideal world, Apple would recognise the fact that in-app purchases deliver a similar user experience that other payment providers can deliver for a fraction of the cost and instead deliver something with deep integration into other Apple products and technologies (screentime, for example, to allow for a pay to play model) in order to give developers a reason to use them. Why would they do that though, when they can just play the bully and say “my platform, my rules”?
I know it's never going to happen but I really hope they get forced to split the appstore as a separate business. It would be so much better both for apple and the appstore...
How did I only notice Luke was badly greenscreen in and not actually present only when his camera fell...
apple charging 30% on 3rd party payments.
That is not why people want 3rd party payments at all.
They want it so they don't have to pay the Gatekeeper "apple" 30% for every IAPP
Honestly, I love the Apple vs Floatplane saga, so much drama!
luke ascended for a second
Picking up your phone and seeing Apple as the caller ID? Peculiar.
Linus trolling Luke live with business-speak, and he doesn't even realise? Priceless.
Why was it trolling? Maybe I also didn't catch it but I think Linus just wanted to ask Luke how it all ended to be able to take his mind off of it, before Luke actually gets into telling the entire story. And of course he did it in a funny business-like way, fitting the situation of Luke talking to Apple Support.
Just charge 42% more, that's what lots of small companies are doing these days, apple user will happy to pay it for "convenience" of its ecosystem.
There's no way to justify that. It's pretty unethical to charge Apple users more than other users, and doing so just allows Apple to continue these bad practices of screwing app developers. It might be a long fight to get Apple to change this system, but in the end it benefits everyone who wants to make apps on iOS.
@@snipey14 you're making same profit on apple users, nothing unethical.
Only unethical party is apple in this scenario
@@snipey14 Charging Apple users more is what Apple does, how is that unethical?
Ah yes, screw the consumer and pass the cost onto them. The ultimate answer.
I think this has been Amazon's solution for Twitch. Subscriptions etc are more expensive through the ios app
luke beaming awaay was the best
It took me way longer than I’d like to admit to realize why “Luke is sitting in his chair so weird” and why he sounded funny!
I realized he was green screened into shot but thought that the chair was real lol
@@zmuzzy101 I think the chair is real, is the one that he usually sits in.
I’ll be honest. i had my phone propped up and was watching this out of my peripheral vision while doing some work. I didn’t know he wasn’t in that chair until the webcam fell over
That whole time I didn't realize that luke wasn't in person until he floated away.
6:55 for some reason it didn't register that luke's lower body was missing and that they weren't in the same room together until that moment.
Seeing Luke acceding into heaven when his camera was falling was hilarious. It just happened at the perfect moment.
Luke achieved peak frustration and ascended.
There is 2 solution for this “regulations”:
1) You make apple subscription more pricey to account for margins including 30%. User’s are smart enough today to check website and see that subscription is cheaper there. It is not mandatory to have same prices on all platforms.
The thing is that for floatplane it can be business hell to manage money from apple subscriptions to creators. For example: Stripe has really cool solutions for this kind of problems: your users pay for subscription and money goes directly to content creator and configurable percentage goes to floatplane. It is easy to configure and easy to manage solution. For apple you will have to hire accountant that will do payouts for creators. And i am not starting to talk about how bad apple in-apps to configure and debug from developer’s point….
2) You remove signup and information about subscriptions from app completely. It makes user experience so bad especially for small products. This is so strict that one time my app was delisted from store, because one of the users said in the chat about subscription on website.
It totally looked like Luke was ascending to Apple Heaven near the end lol
If only our tech overlords actually met expectations we wouldn't mind them being overlords
Valve continues to be the exemplar of that. Offer a good service, treat your customers right, and then get out of their way. You can have all the walled gardens and payment processing controls all you like as long as you respect the user's inherent rights to do what they want with the hardware and software they bought. It's actually way cheaper, more profitable, and easier to do than what they're doing now.
amen
6:51 “I have to go now, my planet needs me”
This 8 minute clip summarizes Argentinian government.
"We support small and medium sized businesses" however, you have to pay all these taxes for every thing, and fill up all these forms and be written as a "tier" in the gov institution. And this is literally exactly what happens. Been talking to people in my area, local shops, and they buy what they will sell, sell everything and the margin is pretty low, but there's no expansion incentive at all.
If you make 49.999 a month (random numbers - not in dollars) you're tier 1. X amount of taxes. But if you're 50.001 you're tier 2 (assuming you're whitelisted and want to comply with the laws, of course).
This is what Luke is talking about because, you don't "break" the revenue arbitrary mark by doubling it or tripling it. The 1 million dollar revenue mark is not going to be, when broken, say 4M or more to off-set the 30% cut losses. It could happen in some cases, maybe, but generally speaking that's not how growth works. Or at least I don't think, I really wouldn't know. Linus and Luke can confirm or deny.
So the "pickle" is that at 1M or less, they're fine with 15%, but going over 1.000.001 will give them nothing and there's no offset.
And then the phone guy being super nice but then making the mistake is a classic.
The way it works in Canada is that only the portion over the higher tier threshold is taxed higher,
so if below 30,000 a year gets 10%, and above gets 20%, (just example numbers)
If you make 50,000 a year, 30,000 of that gets 10%, and then 20,000 of that gets 20%
Are you sure that it's not the same in Argentina?
It looked like Luke was ascending xD
Luke's laugh makes me laugh every time, regardless of what he's laughing about. It's contagious.
Th difference in color and size, height is what actually after minutes gave away the footage was blended from two locations! Nice edits! Even the chair is visible. 😎
Wow, I wasn’t paying attention and haven’t watched WAN show (clips) for some time, so I didn’t realize Luke wasn’t there in person until the camera fell XD
Idk how the hell I didn't realize Luke was green screened until the camera fell and I thought they were doing some live special effect or something it was hilarious I was dying
I didn’t even realize Luke wasn’t actually there until the camera fell lol
6:50 "professional" as always i see Luke
Novel idea: Say no to putting out an app for Apple. If enough developers decide to give them the finger things might change, but at present producing anything for any Apple platform is just enabling anti consumer and anti developer policies.
bump
Lol lot's of idiots in this world who will defend Apple in any case, even Linus or any influencers will speak against Apple in light tone after praising how good the apple is and everything can be excused so that it don't blowout except some right to repair people
That’s my idea!
@@chrissieblossom That's part of the point. That's how to start to appy pressure and reasons for people to stop buying Apple products. If enough developers follow suit then Apple is forced to either change, or cede relevance to Android.
Well, Apple monopolized the app store market on iOS devices, so this is essentially asking all iPhone and iPad users to stop using what they bought, which is nearly impossible. I stopped using Apple products years ago, leaving the app store purchases, the hardware, and gamesaves behind, but I guess this is not what the majority of people would do (I mean how likely is one going to intentionally leave his money on the table for the sake of morality...Very unlikely).
Just add the apple tax on top and pass it on to consumers. If people really like Apple products let them pay extra. This is part of the reason I haven't bought an Apple product in ten years.
i never paid for an apple product myself. the last one i owned was the old iphone 4s from my father which he paid 50 bucks for a couple of years ago (was his work phone got it for cheap after they upgraded him to a 6) my current phone and the one i actually paid for is a 200€ 64GB redmi note 7 running android ofcourse. android is so much better atleast for me. i dont need a device designed for 6 year olds just something that is cheap and lets you do whatever the hell you want
They don't allow this. You would have to add the Apple tax to everyone, not just Apple users.
Of course that's also against Apple's rules. Raising the cost of the in app payments to cover the Apple 30% is an explicit no. Pretty much anyway to inform the customer about the 30% or have the customer avoid the 30% is not allowed.
IIRC Luke talked about it before and Apple doesn't allow to have different price for their users, so they would have to apply the tax to everyone, not just Apple users.
@@gyroninjamodder I didn't know that. From a business standpoint then, if I were Linus I'd just add it to everyone then. Another reason to avoid Apples walled garden for me then. That's a super anti-competitive business practice.
It took me 4 minutes and 55 seconds to realize that Luke was just green-screened in.
0:05 That reaction from Linus was gold.
I worked for a small startup streaming service and we hit these exact issues with apple, I feel your pain.
As an aspiring mobile dev I am very invested in this saga.
I’m actually surprised that Luke would answer a random phone call with the caller ID of “Apple”. I feel that with the amount of robocalls and scammers masquerading as Microsoft Support, Insurance companies, the IRS, etc… I would just pass that straight to voicemail and instantly block the number haha.
Cell phone carriers should have like a “verified” system where legitimate companies can go through a process of verifying their phone numbers with them and getting a check mark or something in their caller ID.
Being the nicest person in the world doesn't excuse your absolute incompetence, Apple dude
linus wants you to hurry up because linus loves the sound of his own voice........
Ok who else didn’t realize Luke wasn’t physically next to Linus until his camera fell lmao
when his camera fell it was like ok he is leaving us. up up and away.
WOW i cant belive how good and commited to quality you guys/girls are...
I noticed that Luke is at another location only when his camera tryed to fall down before that i thought they are sitting in same studio eye 2 eye...
Such a great comitment and setup i will now go and watch other episodes of WAN Show to see are they always apart or this was a one time job...
Anyway best wishes to everybody at LMG from Serbia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And thank you for all these years of great content!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👌👌👌
(i think this is my first comment on anything on interweb since ever, this is how surprised I was)
Hahahaha when Luke just started fkn levitating I was like "OH SHIT TIM COOK'S GOT HIM!"
Luke really got so sick of Apple he nearly floated to another plane
WOOOOOOOO
I didn’t notice Luke wasn’t there till the camera dropped
when the camera fell for luke i though time just contacted jesus and was like "Ya take this guy out"
linus be goin crazy looking at a wall
For logged in users you could also include information about subscribing on the website in the welcome email. It certainly won't convert as well as just having it in the app but is better than nothing to get the word out.
6:23 OMG, use this in other videos!
It took me way longer than I care to admit to notice that Luke wasn't actually in the studio.
0:54 lol I just realized Luke is green screened and that they're not in the same room 😂😂
Luke got lifted up into the spirit realm there for a second-
One thing I don't understand about this whole apple monopoly thing is why don't all companies just charge a 30% apple tax in there apps. If you have apple you are used to be gouged for cash already so should help them feel special for paying more for the same service elsewhere?
He really took off from the ground
6:51 Luke: “I must go now. My planet needs me.”
6:51 Luke was so upset he Floated from this mortal plane 😉
I didn't even realize that luke wasn't in the same room until the camera feel down
The phone saying "Apple" feels like something out of a sci-fi dystopia.
Linus’ passive apparently works through cyber space
We need to make it illegal to monopolize any platform's app store. Make it a prerequisite to allowing the sale of apps to be open to alternatives.
i literally didn't notice luke wasnt actually there for longer than i'd like to admit
i didn't even notice luke was remoting in until he dropped his camera
6:52 I watched with half an eye, only now I realized Luke is actually not sitting on set! Haha
I straight up did not notice Luke wasn't physically there until the camera fell
Do what Spotify did!!!!!! Payments restricted to website and the app becomes a vehicle for the program already payed for by the sub
they can’t, spotify and netflix are both under a different bracket that is for the old papers…
@@Souls4Roca Actually, I'm curious what's the issue with Floatplane presenting itself as a "reader" app, as Apple calls them. That's what the JFTC lawsuit was about and that's when Apple allowed "reader" apps to insert a link out to external websites and let people set up or manage their accounts there.
Amazon Video and Photo are also under that umbrella now.
But I also think that Luke's issue is mainly users who come across the Floatplane app on the App Store first and wanting to register & pay?
@@danshilm size pretty much, they can't really go against Murdoch
I didn’t realize he wasn’t in studio until about halfway through.

Its scary to hear this as someone who's been developing an app myself for half a year.
edit: oh my god I haven't realized that Lukes been a digital greenscreen insert this whole episode. Were yall doing something similar other episodes too?
6:53 Luke: I got to go now. My planet needs me.
They couldn't say if the 30% is above 1 million or replaces the 15% overall? How are they so incompetent?
You think Apple actually bothers to train its employees to competency? No, no, that's not how abusive mega-corporations work at all. They hide everything and belittle you for not knowing things when they review your performance. That is how abusive mega-corporations do.
Luke ascending was hilarious
See myself... if it is available on web, I'll go for the website and save the homepage as quic access icon instead.
Tl/de: Linus' dropping powers are now so strong he can even drop stuff remotely.
Lmao I didn't realize Luke was floating until 30 secs of watching
It's a bit spooky how Linus sits there motionless for so long! It's like he is rebooting!
6:53 Luke just ascended to the developers heaven
5:08 I finally noticed Luke is a disembodied torso
Tim Apple on the WAN Show next
Wtf, I did not even realised luke was not there until the camera dropped. Even though he was cut off at the bottom the whole time 😂
Just another case for allowing sideloading apps on iOS/iPadOS. The app would still run in the same sandboxes environment that apps from the App Store do.
I love how Linus is just having a mental break about the situation, while Luke is so beyond saving, he can only laugh at how terrible the situation is.
How did it took me a whole minute to realize Luke isnt sitting in that chair
Linus remotely dropped Luke's camera.
