When we last lived in New Zealand there was an article on the TV news where people were putting their socks on the outside of their shoes down in the South Island to avoid falling over in the ice. So you need two pair of socks, one on the inside of your shoes and one big enough to go over the outside of your shoes. Too easy.
Marriages between 1st cousins (consanguineous) was illegal in England from the 5th century (banned by the Pope across `Christendom’) until the 16th century in England when Henry VIII wanted to marry his cousin Catherine Howard (later beheaded) and -as head of the CofE-dropped the prohibition. Watching last week's Question Time was excruciating. Once again. Interrupts the speaker she disagrees with to make her point, like anyone cares what she thinks. Bring on Trevor Phillips. Or Harry Enfield ! 😉
Easy to say, but sometimes people who are in crisis medical conditions talk nonsense, so the operator has spend valuable time ensuring that they really are dealing with a time-waster. One man I dealt with at work was behaving strangely, asking for things in a quite normal way, then denying he'd asked, refusing to answer questions, then denying that he'd refused, and so on - he was actually having a catastrophic stroke, although he didn't show the classic face-drooping or slurred speech. On the other hand, some people phone for an ambulance for the most bizarre reasons, and I've seen a few end up in court for phoning 999 hundreds of times within a few days, just wanting attention.
Sometimes people who are in bad situations call 999/911 and use coded conversations to try and get help without their abusers. Like calling for food to be delivered where you have to give your address to let the police know you’re in trouble
I dont know what member of our RF will be given the job of knighting Khan and which one will suddenly find themselves having another engagement elsewhere.

Why is King Charles knightly this so and so? I'm from Australia and I don't generally like that female politician with brown skin who shouted out not my king but I'm beginning to think he's not my king either if he's going to do this sort of thing.
Good to hear some positive comments regarding the Liz Truss budget, it was aimed at making life for working people better unlike the current PM and his crew of cretins.
Sadly, although 1st cousin marriages is (and has been for a long time) morally wrong in the UK, Australia and many other counties it is technically not illegal. Not sure but the US is one of a few who deemed it a big enough a problem to formalise it in their legislation as being illegal. I was shocked when I goggled this years ago, the search results were so so scary (in reference to Australia specifically) not just 1st cousins but technically a whole list of direct relatives are listed as being potential partners to legally marry (direct blood relatives) without breaching current laws. Deemed morally wrong for so long that I hope it hasn’t happened often. But who knows? We need to update our laws ASAP.
I started working for the South Central Ambulance Service in 2023. There is indeed a problem with wait times for ambulances, hospital queuing, public misuse of ther service and so on. But the real issue seems to be people who cannot get GP appointments and then their problems fester for days, weeks, and months, until they call an Ambulance. Most of the jobs I attend are urgent care, not medical emergencies, but the majority of those people do genuinely need help. A lot of other jobs are mental health related. I worked for several years in another country with a private health sector alongside a public health sector, and I personally think that is the way forward for the UK. The NHS definitely has enough money for the necessary facilities and equipment, it just spends it on exorbitant salaries for top management. The city where I used to work, in another country, had 17 hospitals for a population of 4.2 million, about 5 of those had the full set of disciplines (ER/paed/urology/neuro/maternity/ortho/etc etc) So, it absolutely blows my mind how few hospitals the UK have, and its a first world country. NHS also needs to build more mental health facilities, and hire more psychologists and counsellors. There are serious mental health problems here, not only people taking the piss (looking at managers who can get 6 months of paid (with unsocial) stress leave). NHS should also consider outsourcing health professionals who live in other countries. They can be trained on the UK system, get registered with HCPC, then do online consults wherever they are living. For example, if a psychiatrist living in South Africa is working for NHS online, they would not require the same salary as a psychiatrist here due to lower living expenses in South Africa. I think this could also work for radiologists who review Xrays, CT scans etc.
Another massive issue is the number of patients who get discharged from hospital too soon. I'd say about 20% of the jobs I attend are for people who need to be returned to hospital because they are still too unwell to be place back in the community or don't have enough support to manage in the community. Another thing that should be reviewed is aligning protocols between sectors. For example, if an elderly person has a fall and even slightly glances their head against a wall or something, and they're taking blood thinners (which they usually are) Ambulance protocol dictates a trip to hospital for CT head. But once in hospital, the protocol is different and they might just get turned around and discharged immediately. Another example is an intoxicated person who lacks mental capacity to make safe decisions for themselves. Prehospitally we have to take them to hospital (often against their will) but once at hospital they immediately get discharged because the hospital follows a different protocol. While I know illegal immigration is a big problem in the UK, I don't actually attend too many immigrants. (I guess they have dedicated doctors that work for the hotels where they are put up.) A much bigger issue, in my opinion, is the aging population. About 85% of my calls are for elderly people. Another ridiculous problem is the number of elderly folks I take from their nursing homes to hospital for IV antibiotics. A lot of these folks have dementia and being bundled off to hospital is really stressful for them. It blows my mind that the nurses in these nursing homes are not allowed to administer IV antibiotics. This alone, would save the NHS an enormous amount of money. The scope of practice for health care professionals in South east UK is really low. Where I used to work, abroad, my scope was on the same level as helicopter paramedics in UK. When I came here, my scope was extremely reduced. This means doctors have to action a lot more here than compared to other countries, which places an incredible demand on doctors.

🇦🇺 Hoorah. My highlight of the week. Its 9.30am Saturday in Canberra. So I'll save this for tonight with a pizza and a "couple" of wines. 🤣😁👍
Great team tonight! Having a Knighthood is looking like a dishonour if Sadiq Kahn joins the team of Jimmy Savile, Philip Greene, Tony Blair etc. How can the King stop a Knighthood being a serious embarrassment?
