Knitting a gauge swatch--fact vs myth - In knitting, getting the right gauge is important, but there are all kinds of rules out there about what you have to do, what you should never do, and what horrible things will happen if your swatch isn't perfect. Some people say you don't have to swatch at all and others say you should practically knit a third of your garment for your swatch. The truth is somewhere in between.

Thank you for your calm and positive attitude towards searching. I do swatch but I don't really understand the result. I just keep trying with different needle sizes until I get something similar to the pattern.

Yes, for a garment I swatch. Thank you for talking about this. People who make not swatching their personality are obnoxious, in my opinion. Not using the tools and skills at your disposal is not a bragging point.

I'm a new knitter and I've never ever everrrr met gauge... ANYONE'S gauge (not designer, yarn company recommendation, et al) so I taught myself to swatch, and recalculate based on my swatch gauge. This is also one of the reasons I've never bought a pattern, because if I have to do all these recalculations I might as well use the free patterns to learn and practice.
Right now I'm working on knitting stuff I see just based on looking at it. I'm getting there 😁
