    people need to understand how tiny cherry shrimps' bio load is. they don't need to swim all day in mid water like fish, so they use very little enegy traversing, therefore ingesting less energy comparing to fish their size. their diet consists of mostly plant matter or algae which makes their poop rich in fibre/cellulose rather than rich in raw ammonia like hte poop of most similar size fish. that plus their bomb proofness in general, you can pretty much keep them anywhere in anything. the only thing preventing you from doing that should be ethics around living space, not whether or not they can survive (trust me, they can).

      I'd also argue there is some intelligence argument in play. Fish, while they look dumb, are actually highly developed animals so it's cruel to give them such small places. However, shrimp are invertebrates which basically have a brain that runs on programming like a robot. There is no happiness, just a set command telling them if they're good or bad. As long as you have the correct conditions for them and you're experienced then their attitude will be no different than it they were in a 1000 gallon tank.

      Thanks my friend. This is very reassuring. The internet if filled with people telling that shrimps are very hardest to keep. They need to be cared so much… but you comment gave me the confidence to get shrimps.

    I wouldn't do this again, but when I was a kid I gave my mom a cherry shrimp in a normal sized lighbulb that I emptied the innards of, it just had a little sand from my aquarium java moss and a shrimp. She had it for over a year.

    Very cool indeed! A couple of years ago I filled a heavy duty glass vase that holds just over half a gallon which I set up with substrate, subwassertang and a few minuture ramshorn snails. For the most part all if have done with that container is a couple of water changes, everything is doing great. Was hesitant to add shrimp but always wanted to. I'm going to put a few culls in there and see what happens.

    I have kept many nano tanks with shrimp. The smallest I have done successfully is 1.1 gallon containers with almost a third of that tank taken by deep fine gravel substrate (with crushed seashells sold as a dietary calcium supplement for chickens mixed in) for the plants, so they are in less than a gallon of water. I plant densely and encourage many forms of life in the tanks, there are several species of snails, detritus worms, copepods, and daphnia. I do not do water changes I just top off evaporation, I do not remove anything other than excess snails, the odd pipet of copepods for my fish in other tanks and trimmed plants. No heat, no filters, just an air stone and lots of live plants.

    I bought a 5 litre cylindrical glass vase from Sainsbury's (£7). Added local river sand (washed and boiled), a few stones, and six different plants. Filled it up with canal water as I live afloat. I made a very tiny sponge filter with air line, and even a USB powered heater. Currently waiting for it to cycle and establish... I bet the shrimps will still die when I add them?

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure. I have daphnia in almost all my non-fish tanks and I don’t think the shrimp are eating them. I suspect they would, if the water mites died first.

    Hello! I would like to ask your opinion about my future setup. :)
    I would like to dedicate on shelf from my aquarium rack to shrimps. After your videos i fell in love with shrimp keeping. I got a great oportunity to get 4 small tanks for a really good price. Each tanks can hold around 10-11l of water. I would like to keep different colours in each tank. Could this be a long term solution for a shrimp shelf? Are the tanks too small? For the filtration I'm thingking to get 4 small hang on the back filters or 4 sponge filters hooked to an air pump. Price wise i think the sponge filter could be better but the HOB filters are less noisy. I would like to scape all the tanks with wood, rocks and plants.

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi. Thanks for taking the time to get in touch. 10 liters of water is small. Can it work? Yes, anything can work. If it were me I’d go sponge filter and lots of plants. Sounds like it could be a great collection of shrimp tanks. Would love to hear how it goes 🤞🏻

    • @theduck4469
      @theduck4469 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FishKeepingAnswers Thank you for your quick answer. I'm worried about the tank stability since the water volume is so small. It will be heavily planted, I'm even thinking about addig 1 pothos plant for each tank to help with the stability. I could go with 2 20l tanks but that means less shrimp variety. I will come back with an update if it works out.

  • @thedarkninja_
    @thedarkninja_ ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Been looking forward to this video! Although I have 2 questions. What will you do once the baby shrimp are born as you can't exactly take them out due to them being super small. Also, is there any way to do a similar setup without the air pump? Maybe more frequent water changes? Floaters?

    • @FishKeepingAnswers
      @FishKeepingAnswers  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Truth be told, I will remove the 4 shrimp before the babies are born.
      You probably could add more live plants and a few floaters instead of the air pump, but in my experience you will end up with a kind of oil slick scum on the surface which can reduce the gas exchange at the surface.
      However, anything is possible if you are prepared to put the work in 🤔

    • @thedarkninja_
      @thedarkninja_ ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FishKeepingAnswers thanks for this, im still working on the permission to get the shrimp but want to know what my plan is first, most likely scenario for me is I start off with 2 female reds, yellows and blues. Assuming the breeder can sex them, then at some point get some 3l tanks and use the bigger 7-8l tank to breed a set of reds and see how they sell. If they sell well I'll do some more breeds

    • @alexs4446
      @alexs4446 ปีที่แล้ว

      After years of messing around with this, the only way I've managed this kind of setup successfully without forced aeration was to remove the biofilm that accumulated on the surface of the water with clean dry paper towels daily or by meticulously scooping it out bit by bit with a spoon. If you can afford an air pump it's worth the investment to just not have that issue at all😅😂
