    The most impressive CGI I've ever seen is when they CGI'd a real human face over Mr Sunday Movies' goat head. That was seamless CGI, if you didn't know any better you might actually think that Mr. Sunday was a real human.

    • @thanksfernuthin
      @thanksfernuthin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      BattleUp Saber- Are you a moron?!! Or legally blind? The light totally comes from the wrong side most of the time. It's the worst CGI I've ever seen. You can totally tell someone just slapped a random human head on Mr. Sunday's human goat body. Or maybe you're a fan boy trying to cover up for his gross incompetence. You... make... me... sick!

    • @kariya56809
      @kariya56809 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I think CGIing a Mason next to him while the goat was doing ventriloquism was more impressive. if I didnt know any better I'd thought Mason exists.

      Phil Scoles yeah it’s ridiculous how racist Hollywood still is. The only time they cast a Purple American is to play a purple alien? Thank you for this. I am a VFX compositor and 90% of my job is just removing wires, gaff tape, pimples and boom mics. I am sick of the people that complain about CGI in movies because the fact is you are Lucky if you notice even 1/10th of the actual effects work that was done in any modern movie.

    • @caedengoering
      @caedengoering 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CGI and digital effects aren’t the problem. They can look really great (take Thanos from Infinity War as an example). It’s the really bad stuff that looks horrible. I barely notice most CGI or digital editing. Much like seeing a magician, I am willing to be fooled. I don’t actively look for things to break. I don’t actively look for the one area of editing where things aren’t perfect. If it isn’t glaringly horrible and in my face (like the Lucas additions to the original trilogy - wow - very not good) I’m a fan.

  • @taqu
    @taqu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +84

    The floating Bruce Banner head right near the end of Infinity War was jarring. That movie had such great special effects and CGI and then during a solemn moment, BAM - Mark Ruffalo's head is just casually chilling in the background.

    Ha, ha! This is hilarious! It's not the first time James shows a shot that I did the VFX for, but it's the first time he talks about the VFX themselves. I remember when I was putting that helmet over Kylo's face that this must be the most pointless thing I had ever done. No one would ever notice or care about that darned helmet. But here we are, three years later, and there's a video by my favorite TH-camr talking about that exact thing :-)

    I was chatting to a friend of mine and he told me that in the special features of Justice League, there’s commentary that talks about CGI being used to widen the shoulders and shorten the waists of Superman and Batman. Not super surprising considering those bodies are completely unattainable, but I personally would have never noticed.
    Another good one is in Batman Begins. The shot where they show the train with Bruce and his parents on the way to the opera is all CGI. Not just the train, but the entire city.

    • @Fagskarth
      @Fagskarth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hell yeah it is man! I just watched it a couple weeks ago with my son, it was his first time seeing it and he was blown away. He even said the dinosaurs look cooler in the original Jurassic Park than they did in Jurassic World! So I showed him some behind the scenes of the first Jurassic Park and he couldn't believe that they built a huge animatronic T-Rex for the Jeep scenes. And those animatronic scenes look better than some CGI scenes in Jurassic World.

    the blood from the bullet wound, even in the bath,

    Some of the best CGI ever is in Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence. It's Anime and CGI done in such a way that the CGI blends seamlessly to create depth never before seen in cinematic history. They also played the music out of giant speakers into a giant cave and recorded the reverberation. That film from Sony had a bigger budget than World War 2 and gets zero recognition.

    I really appreciate the subtle effects that go into scenery like that Mad Max shot shown or if you look at the BTS of Fincher's Dragon Tattoo, so many scenes in that were sunny and bright and they completely changed the weather and added snow that looks totally real. I also really liked the Paul Walker work done in Furious 7, I remember hearing about the farewell scene at the end but I was shocked after watching it that quite a few scenes had his face digitally placed in doing dialogue and everything.

    "The Jacket," is an AWESOME movie!!!
    (of course, I only say that now, having not seen it since I was going through this; "Adrien Brody is the guy in, "The Village,"?" He's great! I need to watch ALL his movies, and, by default, make them all my favorites!" phase of my life, that I've since grown out of.)

      If you're a fan of Adrien Brody, Have You Ever Seen The Pianist?! That's the movie he won an Oscar for and he freaking deserved it starring in that movie. I was blown away by his performance. And I heard he went to the extremes getting ready for that movie by breaking up with his girlfriend, he stopped eating all kinds of foods so he could lose weight and look like a starving Jewish man living in World War II, and basically lived like a Hermit by himself to prepare for that role in The Pianist. And it paid off big-time!

    You'd be hard pressed to believe that Rocket is CGI in Guardians of the Galaxy and not Bradley Cooper.

      Most times on screen it's an actual raccoon, but it would have upset PETA and other activist groups if the trained racoons were forced to perform dangerous stunts.
      Any time they couldn't hide the wires or the raccoons would be too close to explosives (about 7 different raccoons were used for the role of rocket, one for close ups and 6 for stunts and long shots) they had to use full CGI.
      It's so well done I had trouble telling them apart from the actual raccoons.

    The stunt double for Lex in the original Jurassic Park having a CG face of Lex put on her. The part where she falls through the ceiling and they pull her up. Probably some of the best, and least noticeable CG in JP.

    In The Man Who Wasn’t There, there is a car crash and a shot of one of the car’s wheels flies across the screen. In the DVD commentary the Coen brothers reveal that it is an entirely CGI wheel. This was surprising to me as it’s very subtle and I never thought of the Coen’s as being the “type” of directors to employ CGI. Turns out I was dead wrong as they also digitally shrank Jeff Bridges to allow him to float through the lady dancer’s legs in The Big Lebowski. Then again, they also claimed that Fargo was based on a true story so they could just be fucking with me. No idea why, I haven’t done anything to them.

    There's a Doctor Who Christmas special where writer Russell T Davies realised that an uncooked turkey that was in shot should have been cooked by that time on Christmas day, according to the chronology of the episode, so they cooked it with CGI. On a BBC budget!

    David Fincher uses a lot of CGI that you'd never notice, The Game has some digital enhancement that's cool to compare because it's so minor that it seems arbitrary but when you compare the shots it DOES make a subtle difference

    i know this video came out in 2018, but i'm watching it in 2020. the most recent CGI i was surprised by was in Parasite. when i saw that the main house was just in the middle of nowhere and not complete and the alley was all fake i was pretty impressed bc i didn't think about it for a second while originally watching it.
