You can dye any wool (or alpaca or silk) you want whether it's in a skein or a center pull in this way. I find skeins are nicer to dye with because they dry faster and I don't have to worry about mildew. Love the gradient you get with this method.
Ok, that's awesome! I am looking forward to dyeing yarn soon. I need peach, and green and rose colors. Any tips on how to get that? What type of yarn is best to dye?
Before you wound the yarn on the knitty knotty, could you have put the cake on something like a toilet paper holder and wound both sides at one time? The cake would roll freely and you wouldn't have to untangle it as you wound. Love your videos, they are most helpful.
Just fantastic! I'm REALLY looking forward to dying my first yarn. I just need the right kind of yarn that will take the dye etc. so I'm watching, reading etc & I have a little experience with dying .. But not yarn! I have always loved variegated yarns and it's something that's a bit of a bone a I have is if you want to make say booties or socks they will look totally different with some variegated yarns.. SO your technique I'm liking very much :) thanks heaps, great vid. And beautiful outcome :
I know you said to lace it sit a day or two... is that to complete dry then or just handleable? I worry about mildew if it's left in a cake..or will it dry in a cake?
Is that an aluminum pot? I always hear cautions about that. It didn't seem to affect it. Also, what has your experience been with the color fastness of food dye on yarn?
Can you use this method to dye wool yarn in a skein from the store? Technically it's still the same as a center pull ball, you just have to find the other end. The reason I ask is because I don't have a yarn swift and I'm unemployed so I don't really have a way to get one. I want to hand dye some wool I bought for a friend for Christmas.
Nice companion tutorial to the basic cake version. Thank you!
I may have to try dyeing yarn after all now that I've seen this! Very beautiful!
this looks like so much fun

I would love to see something that was knitted with it :)
Susan Shriver Howell I’ve often wondered this too, even if it’s only a tension swatch

You let the yarn dry in the cake. How long does that take?

What are those white pipe like things you are winding the finished yarn on?
I don't understand what you called it.
Great idea. We'll done.
How does this dying hold up if in the sun for a while. I like to dry on a line?
Following along , except used 4 packets of grape crush and blue typhoon Hawaiian Punch...
What dye did you use?
What the brand of yarn u make it ???
I would add more vinegar so it all absorbes. Have done it before and it works.
Where can I purchase yarn blanks, or undyed yarns in hanks in bulk?
Terri Shaver
Knit picks, or bareyarns.com
it is a ball winder if you click the link it says it
where did you get your winder?
look up a ball winder on google there pretty cheap
What if my yarn is 50% wool and 50% acrylic? is it going to work?
it'll work but expect lighter shades
If you can find wool and nylon yarn it's better because the nylon dyes like wool. Acrylic can be "dyed", but it's more like a paint.
what is the machine called to make the cake?
Ball winder
You have learnt how to do the winding a lot better know lol
its a ball winder
I wish I knew where you grew up, to get that accent and speech pattern. Lots of glottal fry, which isn't good for your vocal cords.
sorry it is a niddy noddy
It's a ball winder, not a yarn swift. Come on now...
I guess you have never made a mistake, Come on now...
