Slick! It might be interesting to have a very open center to pick up more dye. Ah ... something to play with. ;)

I think I really like this technique

Just currently added my wet cake to a (hopefully) rusty orange bath. Wish I could post a pic!

I just checked it. We have pumpkin orange. I think I'm gonna roll it by the outside first and add a blue to it. Hoping for some browns to make autumn sky colors maybe? The drying part is my least favorite so far. (First time dying wool. I've only dyed handmade tshirt yarn with my kids once.)

Have you thought of squeezing the cake of yarn in the dye bath? Maybe it can pull some of the color in? Live your videos!

That's the coolest thing I've ever seen. Do you have pictures or videos of what you made with it? Just today I dyed a small ball of cotton blend yarn by pouring some red cupcake sprinkles into the center and then "cooking" it in the water/vinegar mixture. I think it came out well. It's still drying. Thanks for giving me this fun idea!

What kind of cotton blend was it? If it is a cotton/acrylic blend then unfortunately the food coloring likely will wash out. See: th-cam.com/video/H1Q7XMJph0E/w-d-xo.html to see how much color rinses out of 100% cotton.
This particular yarn went to a Kickstarter backer, so I do not have pictures of this one specifically. I hope to do a slide show with completed yarns at some point.

It's Premier Cotton Fair, which is 52% Cotton, 48% Acrylic. I washed it and the color has stayed. But maybe it will eventually wash out with more washings. It was just an experiment I did with some leftover yarn. And today I found out that you can't dye 100% polyester with food dye..lol. Well, it took the red a little so it's a pale pink.

Food dyes (and acid dyes in general) work well on protein based fibers but that's about it. Nylon has a similar chemical structure to proteins so that is why that works pretty well.
My fingers are crossed for you!

Thanks. I'm having fun experimenting. I couldn't find any superwash wool at Michael's (not a plain light color anyway). Can you recommend one available online for me as a beginner with the dyeing procedure? Preferably a DK or light worsted weight (like 2 or 3 weight).

Ooooooh, I have an idea- what if you dye a cake of yarn, but also use a syringe to add some of the dye directly into the center of the cake? So many ideas, so little time and energy!

Thank you so much for posting your videos, I am enjoying the process and learning along with you. I. was curious as to why you did not add vinegar to this bath, or perhaps I missed it? If the cake had been dry do you think the color would have traveled further into the cake (wicking it further towards the center)? This cake was wet (causing it to perhaps not absorb the die as quickly?) therefore leaving the concentration of color more on the outside?

I added 2 T of white vinegar after presoaking the yarn. I'm not sure why I didn't presoaking the yarn on the vinegar solution, I probably realized there was no vinegar in the bath before filming the next segment. ;)
I was hoping that the wet yarn would let the dye go further but there wasn't that much difference from starting with a dry cake, but I haven't tried this side by side.

A dry cake allows for more color separation along the outside when I'm breaking colors.

+ChemKnits Tutorials Interesting comments, yes I could see how that would happen, and surprisingly understand the science behind it. ha ha. Thank you so much for your reply comments.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but if the mordant (in this case, vinegar) is added to the bath before the yarn, it activates the dye adhesion immediately. The result is the dye will adhere mostly on the outside of the cake and not have as much color to penetrate the cake. Had the pre-soaked cake been soaking in the dye for awhile THEN add the mordant, you may have had dye penetrate further into the cake. There are lots variables, but I found the timing of adding mordant is critical. Beautiful outcome either way.

today I did my first attempt... I don't know how but I obtained the worst green yellow colour I've ever seen hahaha!!!!!!! I've tried to re-dye the skein but apparently that green loves me and doesn't accept any other colours...
