If I may, you should always close all windows when making dye stock, to avoid drafts that may spread the dye powders in the air. Wear a mask when doing this so you're not inhaling the powders. Once the dye is mixed with the water and you're ready to apply it to your fibre, *then* open the windows. You'll want the vapour from the warm water to disperse when heat-setting the fibre.
Thanks for creating this video, it's great that you took the time to help others out!

She's not being annal...she is absolutely correct! Dye powders can be very dangerous if breathed in. Over exposure leads to lung disease and some dyes are even cancer causing. Thank you Lenor for the reminder!! PS you should use a P100 respirator vs a dust mask.

Thanks for the respirator tip! I use one with filters but honestly don't know if they're the best for this type of work or not... I'll have to take a look for the ones you mention :)

They ARE the best for this type of work. I have done extensive research for an upcoming article.

For those of you who have kids and more importantly kids who dye... Use powdered food coloring instead. It will come out just as vibrant but it's much safer and non-toxic.

I have always soaked my fiber in vinegar before dyeing, instead of using citric acid. When adding citric acid to the dye, does one no longer need to do the vinegar soak first? Thanks!

Hi Kimberely. If you soak first the dye strikes faster. If you add dye first and acid later the dye can migrate. This is a really old video I did whatn I was first dyeing fiber. I now have a dyeing class at The Camaj School of Fiber Arts.

@@camajfiberarts So if you do one, do you need to do the other. And if you do, will it have a negative impact on the fiber and/or the dyeing process. If I take a dye that I added citric acid to, and put it on sheep wool that has been soaked in vinegar, would that be problem. I’ve taken a number of dyeing classes where I just soaked the fiber in vinegar, and it has worked beautifully. But after watching this video, I added the citric acid to the dye solution.

If you have good ventilation you definitely want to wear a mask to avoid inhaling particles of dye powder.

I am confused about the adding of the citric acid to the dye solution. If one is immersion (kettle dyeing), should the acid be added after the fiber has absorbed the dye to then allow the dye to bond with the fiber? I believe doing it then may prevent the breakage of colors. If this is true, perhaps two dye solutions can be made, one with the acid and one without. Then if breakage is desirable, or other techniques are used, there is a solution to meet that need. Am I understanding this correctly?

You could use vinegar, but it would not be the same measurements as the citric acid.

Use a mask. You also do not want to be in a room with ventilation because dye particles will get everywhere in the room, and they are powerful. Just a few particles will bleed a lot if and when it comes into contact with water or humidity.

Green is not a primary color. Its a secondary color. The primary would be turquoise or cyan.
