  • We've moved to Phuket, Thailand and unfortunately we got food poisoning and have been sick. With a combination of bad weather and getting sick we're having a rough start in Phuket.
In this video we're finally getting out again after being sick for awhile and staying home from food poisoning.
We head to Yanui Beach in Rawai (the town we're staying). We take a walk along the beautiful beach and eventually head up the road to Cape Phrom Thep where there are some shrines and monuments.
Later we head back to our apartment and the rooftop pool at our building (a full apartment tour was in the last video).

Thankfully it seems like you are over the worst of the food poisoning and glad you are so upbeat about it. Having followed a vlogger who has lived in Thailand for many years I believe charcoal tablets/capsules that you can get from the pharmacy are highly recommended. Hope you continue to recover over the next few days. Wishing you both a very Merry Christmas and thank you for your wonderful coverage of the world in 2022.

Aww srry for the contrast you’ve had lately with sickness + rainy weather! Now you will have FULL appreciation for your good health, sometimes we need to be sick to raise our perspective and see how lucky we are!! ( rather than being focused on little unwanted things) we can let the little stuff go and feel grateful for our restored health 💜
It’s always rainy season on Vancouver Island in Nov. but we noticed the rainy spring season lasted MUCH longer than usual this year, so it seems that seasons are shifting in places

Hi Trevor and Anna. Thanks for your great Vlogs of Thailand!!! I have watched hundreds of Vlogs on TH-cam about Thailand. I am extremely interested in your exploration of Rawai and surroundings. I just came back from Phuket myself, I was there for 3 weeks from Nov 22 to Dec 15. I was based in Patong but rented a scooter for the whole duration and visited from Surin down to Rawai and Chalong Bay. Patong was OK as a base for the first time, but it is really an overcrowded, run down, dirty, stinky and ugly city filled with vendors that harass you every 5 minutes. Almost everything on the coast away from Patong is nice. My choice of beaches are #1 Yanui, #2 Nai Harn, #3 Surin. Which is why I liked your video so much, I agree that Yanui is wonderful. Snorkeling around the rocks is great!
Rawai is less crowded than most other beach areas, has more greenery, and is conveniently located. Plus it is exposed to winds from almost all directions if you are a little uphill. Comparatively Patong gets winds only from the west as it is surrounded by hills that block winds from other directions. From Rawai, the access to Chalong bay is convenient because that's where fish arrives fresh every day, and the Chalong pier is where the ferries leave to islands like Phi Phi or even Krabi. And Big Budha is right there too. It is free to visit and the views are incredible from there on top of the hill. You are also close to Phuket Town which is great for Mall shopping and the Sunday night market.
I want to warn you about the day excursions ($50 to $75, negotiable like everything else) to the islands like Phi Phi, Maya Bay and others. It is extremely commercialized. They take you to atolls where they sell booze or to the shops in Phi Phi. On these trips, the places to swim or snorkel are very limited and polluted due to the number of tourists and the way they have it organized like a racket. But it is good to get a situation on where places are. My idea is to find someone who has a smaller but good size boat to take me to uncrowded islands or beaches once a week. That's because I want to move to Thailand and live in Rawai. And I will need to fill the days with beach, snorkeling, sea trips and all. The Adaman sea is amazing by the way! So many islands and clear waters.
I should be back to Rawai in March 2023 for a month. Then I need to spend months selling everything in my house, then the house itself, and applying for retirement residency. Life in the USA has become miserable, with everything failing. This country is going down fast and life is not affordable here if you want to enjoy it, unless you are rich. I have a good income but spending half of it before spending for myself is not good (taxes, insurances, etc). I guess it is the same with EU, Canada, Australia, etc going down the drain too. South Eastern Asia on the other hand is going up.
Regarding your food poisoning, it can happen anywhere. Hell, I god sick a few times in the US with bad food, especially seafood that they keep on the shelves for a couple of days. In supermarkets I ask if fish is fresh and they say yes, it is fresh frozen (not my idea of fresh). Watch what people cook with fish in Thailand, they sometimes use fish liver and other stuff that doesn't keep well or has too many germs. I never get sick on chicken on a stick! Or with fish that is alive before they cook it.
I am glad you like the Ginger Ale in the red cans (available at all 711 and Big C). I use it mixed with whisky. At home in the US, I drink Canadian Crown Royal (hey!) mixed with Canada Dry ginger ale (hey!) and a bit of ginger beer for kick. A dash of your ginger potion (which is probably meant to me mixed with a main drink rather than on its own) would be great instead of Ginger beer!
Regarding driving a scooter, they are easy to maneuver, but you really need to learn how to drive like Thai people. They have a system and it works although at first glance it looks chaotic. I got plenty of advice from a Thai person and it helped tremendously. Don't pass on the left, don't speed, drive defensively and watch all around you. Most accidents are with irresponsible tourists. Alcohol and drugs don't help. My rule is if I drink a beer I take a tuk-tuk. If you see someones speeding like a mad person especially without a helmet it is probably a tourist.
Rules to be legal driving a scooter: Carry your home country driver's license for motorbike (not only for car) as the scooters are 125cc and up (I recommend 150cc minimum, Hondas are the best at 300-350 Bahts per day); do carry an international permit for motorcycle which AAA can provide for $20; do always wear a helmet; do not carry an ATM card or a large amount of cash. If you follow these rules the risk of being ticketed (bribed) by a policeman is low. You will be stopped at the many police checkpoints. Interestingly if you are Thai or you carry a Thai passenger you will never be ticketed. But I do highly recommend driving a scooter and not a car as it is enjoyable to be free to go anywhere you want and taxis or Tuk Tuks are very expensive. Cars are difficult to park and the liability is high. Oh and forget insurance in Thailand, almost impossible to find and too many scams. Pay with your credit card as most of them provide collision insurance. Some rental places take only cash; avoid them. It is probably also better to give a security deposit rather than your passport. Alternatively, I carry 2 passports from different nationalities so I can always give them the one I didn't use for entry into Thailand.
Last words, I am looking for a place to stay in March and I think I know where your apartment building is, probably one of the gray buildings on the 4030 between the lake and Rawai Beach on the hill. I would appreciate if you can let me know. I can send you an email if you prefer. My TH-cam channel is: Retired Al Fixall by the way...
    Enjoy Rawai!

Not a lot to do in a place like Koh Samui when the weather is bad. You should check out Maybell's Coffee Garden they are not far from where you are staying and serve the best breakfast in Phuket. They are also vloggers. I was afraid of getting sick on this trip and for the first time in my life took the flu shot. Fortunately I did not have stomach issues. I highly recommend the scuba diving. Climate on the south peninsular is different from the inland up north. You better check the weather specific on the south or down to weather forecast in Malaysia would be closer in accuracy. In my opinion the best time to see south sea of Thailand is in Thai summer around March - May not Thai cool season ( end of the year) nor Western summer ( July - September).

So sorry you are sick! ugh. always remember the BRAT diet when stomach sick: Bananas Rice Applesauce and Toast. soothing for your stomach and I would make the ginger juice into hot tea just mix it with hot water. Also could add fresh mint but mint tea is a must as well. NO dairy yet until you get on your feet again and only then, do a probiotic yogurt to restablish gut flora. the coconut might have been ok to rehydrate yourself as that is your biggest concern after a long bout like this. your body is depleted and will need high rehydration: no alcohol and sodas! you can also find the ginger candy to suck on when feeling bad and out and about; its a lifesaver for me

Sorry you two got sick. When you get sick in Thailand, go to a pharmacy and tell them your symptoms and they will sort you out. When I got food poisoning, they recommended charcoal tabs and that did the trick.
Be careful when buying bottled water on the street, make sure it is sealed.
It is doubtful you got it from icecubes. Restaurants and know if they use unpurified ice, pretty much everyone will get sick.
Now, back to your normal fun stuff.

We've been to Thailand several times and we're still really careful about not drinking tap water, using bottled water to brush our teeth, not using ice or eating things that aren't freshly cooked (like fresh vegetables or fruit (that we don't peel ourselves). Even though it is a popular vacation area and has nice restaurants, we're not used to the microbes. So far, we haven't gotten sick (knock on wood). In the states, there is something you can buy to take before you're going to eat that binds to the food so you don't get sick. Can't remember the name bur I can get it, if you want.

Hi Guys, Stumbled upon your channel by accident, Nice videos. I've been living in Thailand for close to 20 years now, and the moment i heard you got food poisoning i couldn't help but grin a bit.... It's quite common and i get it once or twice a year.... ranging from bad kebab to spoiled fish, it's one of the things you will get used to, and will kind of grow resistance to....
When i heard you say PIZZA place, i recognized it. I get it EVERY time i eat pizza as soon as there's mushrooms on them..... and it's pretty instant, 3-4 hours after consuming it..... So... where there mushrooms on your pizza? if so, try avoid them next time....
I'm a bit thrown off by the title of this video and the text "This Sucks!". Worst Nightmares come true... I expected tood poisoning, broken legs from accidents, robberies and burglaries and lots of other things. So all you got was food poisoning? If that's the worst travel nightmare come true you're gonna be in for a hell of a ride.....
Anyway, just wanted to leave you guys a quick comment and wish you good luck!

I do usually give you a like in your street food videos only to support you but..to be honest...I never find it enjoyable because I never will have street food..so afraid of getting sick while I'm abroad ;)

There are something you need learn about food and beverage in Thailand.
    1. Spicy food + fruit juice. = toilet
    2. Spicy food + fresh milk, coffee/milk, tea/milk. = toilet
    3. Some fruits(durian) + beer, Alcohols = toilet, hospital
    4. Most of Thai's dishes were base on Asian herbs which might effect for the westerner.
    5. Your body will get used to it. not just the food but the heat, weather, smells and people.
    6. Welcome home ! Wish you will enjoy living in Thailand.

I got food poisoning when I was in Pattaya Thailand also after I ate seafood. I wanted to go to the emergency room, but the local man said the hospital will not do much for me, so I did not go. Then the local Thai man went to the pharmacy and bought the medicine for food poisoning. After I took the medicine for about a minute, I threw up and I felt much better afterward.
