Remove the core or start with an empty saber. Spray with easy off oven cleaner (paying attention to the safety precautions) and rinse when done. Apply aluminum black to the areas you want to weather and hit with scotchbrite pad to reveal areas. Repeat as needed. Clearcoat when done.

Hello Carly, one neat trick called the "Mustard Trick" is great for replicating the effect of larger "flaked" areas of paintwork. To do this is simple...just get a jar of regular mustard and using a brush, paint a pattern or blobs on areas where you want larger exposed "damage" and allow the mustard to dry. Then you can spray paint over the hilt as you did. When your saber has dried and you use the scrubbing pads you will get to the areas that had Mustard on and it will peel off leaving a larger flaky/chipped effect and you still get the scratched effects.
Hope this is helpful for future Carly King Customs and well done on your first creation.

A couple of critiques if you don’t mind…
    1. All LGT basic sabers can have their core taken out so that you wouldn’t have to tape up the electronics, the pommel or the emitter and worry about destroying the core.
    2. When spray painting, short quick sprays should do the trick. In my experience with spray paint, it just leaves paint trails and bubbles (due to dripping while drying). I’d recommend watching HappyTrooper’s lightsaber prop videos that go more into detail.
    3. While your weathering with the scrubbing pad works really good, another method I’d recommend would be dry brushing. Use black paint for metal finish and metallic paint for black finish. Rooster Teeth did a video on lightsabers for their Master and Apprentice prop videos which show this technique. Same thing with HappyTrooper (mentioned before).
Having said that, your lightsaber looks amazing, and I can’t wait to see more lightsaber customization videos in the future if you decide to do more!

My pops is a retired photographer. One day he brought me to a friend of his, also a photographer. He led me to a closet that was filled with tons, and I mean tons of old cameras, Including boxes of old flash handles. I tried desperately to find a graflex, but it was not meant to be :( He did have a couple of Highlands( otherwise known as MPP'S) or Vaders hilt and some other basic, less intricate, non functional handles. I took those home and after going to the hardware store, started to attach the D ring and lower grips that I made from some spongy type weather stripping. They looked cool enough to imagine having built my own lightsaber. This was back in the early 90's and back then you couldn't even get internal electronics or even replica sabers as Master Replicas didn't come out with their first saber until 2002 with the Anikin ep2 hilt with an electroluminescent blade. I'll have to dig them out of the basement so I can show you what I came up with if your interested, Carly. Anyway, thanks for the videos and keep up the good work.

I have NO idea what paints Saber Forge uses, but I found that wet/dry 500 grit sandpaper and some wood popsicle sticks shaved down work wonders for accenting your finish! That and I also found out that removing the internal components is easier than I thought!😊 After sanding, before spray painting, wipe your hilt down with acetone to help clean it well.

Looks good but if you use it all that paint will wear off and if you clear coat it, it will be shiny. This is good if it is just gonna be a decoration.

Honestly, doing a bad-@$$ job. This is maybe the 5th video I have watched of yours today and I have to wonder why today is the first day they were recommended to me. Your channel is going to blow up. Keep up the great work!

Do you wait for the spray paint to dry fully? Or is it just like partially dry when you scrub it?

great tutorial, but, wouldn't this be a lot easier if you simply removed the core from the hilt rather than having to mask a bunch of openings?
