I find it ironic that minecraft, which is supposedly partially educational, depicts it as so hard to break that it's second only to bedrock, yet in reality you can literally just break it with a literal rock.
Thankfully, Minecraft is super realistic in every other way. Such as how trees float in the air when you break them in real life, you give villagers emeralds in real life, or how you need at least 10 obsidian cubes to make a real life Nether portal. Oop, I only have 5 minutes until I have to be at my job. Time to activate Creative Mode!

But was quickly rejected, not because it didn't work, it absolutely did, but because obsidian has a property that causes tiny flaked to break off when cutting flesh and other soft,yet firm things. Fish for example. So if you do this, you will have small shards of obsidian in your food. The sharper the obsidian is, the more shards there will be.
BTW can you tell me if blade like this one is actualy sharp? The edge of big singular flake looks sharp, but the finished knife looks more like a saw than a knife.
@piddlesfiddles2075 the serrated edges are the sharp bit. It's so thin that it'll self-sharpen as it chips over time. But the person's right, obsidian knives are not recommended to use. Great souvenirs though if you're a souvenir person

The difficulty of this pressure flaking and knapping is absurdly high. I've only ever made arrow heads from Obsidian and my hands and knees hated me afterwards so major major props to you and your friend for receiving such a great gift.
Just a heads up. Obsidian while sharper than any solid bladed object, can leave shards in whatever is cut. Think of it like a grill brush. All it takes is one little wire or shard.. be safe!

Imagine all of the beautiful gemstone he has wasted to learn how to make a knife. He wastes so much gemstone even making this one knife that would be a hell of a lot stronger if made from metal or hard rock. Obsidian is volcanic glass, formed by lava getting cooled quicker than usual (mostly underwater). Which makes obsidian just opaque black glass. Which also makes it very sharp, so it’s perfect for a knife.

fun fact about obsidian: It’s extremely felsic (high silica content) in composition, which is why when it fractures it has that conchoidal shape. Now most felsic rocks are usually light colored - but obsidian gets its black color from abundant, microscopic crystals of minerals like magnetite, hornblende, pyroxene, plagioclase and biotite (Gets whacked with a baseball bat that I didn’t see because as a geologist I can only observe rocks and minerals)

@radxan3295 I was pointing that out, so a noob in obsidian working would know to always use those precautions since their comparatively soft hands would have ended up shredded as if they'd slapped a table full of razer blades. While I would be that noob if I tried this, I have taken a college class in archeology, which includes the study of too production like this.
I'm fairly sure he addressed this in a video a while back saying he understands the risks of not wearing / using the protective gear but he personally opts out of using it because he finds it easier to make and shape the tool without the gloves on
For more experienced builders the gloves can be a hinderance as obsidian chips can pop up and get stuck in the glove causing worse cuts

Obsidian is volcanic glass, formed by lava getting cooled quicker than usual (mostly underwater). Which makes obsidian just opaque black glass.
Which also makes it very sharp, so it’s perfect for a knife.

Obsidian is sharp but it's also fragile and fractures conchoidally into small sharp pieces. I'm not sure how well suited it is for cutting food

fun fact about obsidian: It’s extremely felsic (high silica content) in composition, which is why when it fractures it has that conchoidal shape. Now most felsic rocks are usually light colored - but obsidian gets its black color from abundant, microscopic crystals of minerals like magnetite, hornblende, pyroxene, plagioclase and biotite (Gets whacked with a baseball bat that I didn’t see because as a geologist I can only observe rocks and minerals)

It's really interesting to see someone create blades using the same technique used by early man. It really makes you appreciate the ingenuity of humankind even in the dawn of our existence. It also just results in a really badass knife.
