As a teenger and young adult, I grew up on this music. It made appreciate melody and complexity. Hearing it againg takes me back in time. I know all these musical pieces, I heard them constantly (also people like Grusin, Benson, Carlton, Narell, Felder, P. Jackson Jr., Spyrogira, Yellowjackets, Rippingtones, Sanborn, Klugh, etc.). Something unique. How fortunate I was.
Jimmy Johnson on bass. This was 37 years ago but I think he was playing the same Alembic bass that he's still playing today with James Taylor. He's one of the best bass players ever. I had the privilege of seeing him live in Lisbon twice with JT. Greetings from Portugal.
I was reading a comment today by Jimmy on the Alembic web page that this was the graphite neck Alembic. Not the one he's using now with James Taylor. It still sounds amazing!! Jimmy is such a tasteful player and one the very Best on 5 string!!
I moved to Hollywood in '84, Rit was already a guitar hero to me. For years to come I had the pleasure of seeing all of these players in different local venues, their own gigs or supporting others. It was a time I'll never forget.
Jimmy Johnson on bass does a run at 1:01:49 in the middle of Is it You and Lee looks round with a kinda "great run" look towards Jimmy - it is beautiful too using all 5 strings
Lee Ritenour is one of the most talented musicians ever. Back before CDs I bought his cassette (Rit/1981) and I think I played it til it fell apart!! “Is it you” is one of the hottest tracks ever!
I know, many people will mention Miles' bands or some other bands like Weather Report, etc., but this line up is just amazing! One of the most interesting drummers from 70s and 80s, one of the best bass players, the endless voice of Phil, the great tone of Ernie, the solid presence of Barnaby Finch and of course, the juicy guitar of Captain Rit!
This video changed the way I think about music. I play guitar and keyboard but I think of ways to play now that I could not before. Thanks Lee, I'v e loved your music for many years now but this group of people are my favorite.
me again! LOL Listened once again last night. Everyone in the band is an expert at what they do. Best assembly of musicians and vocals!! Get to see Lee in Portsmouth, NH in April. Can't wait!!
I've been listening to Lee Ritenour longer than I thought: he did the appagiation on Strawberry Letter #23 with the Brothers Johnson, but it was decades before I knew that. in the same way, I heard Phil Perry sing Say You Will with Rena Scott and Dr. Osamu Kitajima when I was in high school, but it wasn't until I came out of Navy boot camp decades later that I knew who Phil Perry was! The Heart Of The Man cassette was the first active duty purchase I made at the AAFES in which I grew up.
I had a video of this show years ago, May be not exactly the same, but i remember all the tracks and it's good to hear them again. Great musicians, very good compositions, great time...
This is when Lee and Larry Carlton styles were similar with a blues rock influence. Afterwards Lee got heavy into Wes Mont style which went into 4 Play. I love both styles. Jimmy Johnson solo on Rio Funk is one of the best
This is the best concert I’ve ever listened to! Vadim you did a wonderful job with this! This album is our favorite. Lee is the best! Can’t wait to see him again! Can you image a reunion of this band ? Unforgettable!
If it were up to me, I'd give Lee Ritenour the title of Doctor of Medicine. His guitar would cure many diseases and dramatically prolong many people's lives. :-)
Jimmy Johnson along with Alembic created the first 5-string bass and GHS created the first 5-string set for his bass!!!! According to the master Anthony Jackson, Jimmy is one of the finest bass players there is!!!! Amazing skill and killer tone!!!!!
It's a sign of the times kind of concert.....the music was predominantly what passed for rock music and instrumental excursions back then. Lee has gotten so much better and broadened his playing to encompass jazz, fusion, and more contemporary arrangements. Rock can be so boring, and it was in this performance despite exemplary and tasteful soloing by several instrument players, including Lee. But this format of music strangles the percussionist, bass guy, and even the keyboards to a degree. Mostly formulaic stuff by all, but in later decades, the tempos were varied and uptempo time signatures began to prevail. With as talented a drummer as Carlos was back then, he was able to put his full repertoire or skill set on display during the Record Plant performance when they did more creative material and had players like Dave Grusin and Larry Williams in the mix. Carlos Vega was a talented guy, but this kind of rock material does little to show his talent. Such a shame. But quality concert nonetheless.
The art of Carlos Vega 🥰🙏
RIP
Human perfection on drums!!! RIP
Carlos Vega, Jeff Porcaro and Mike Porcaro in my heart !!! Thiago from Brazil !!!
Amen Thiago
Grandes músicos que se foram
Eternal legends
Can we talk for a moment about Jimmy on bass? That guy is a melody master
Oh YEAH! I was unimpressed by the solo at Rio Funk tho at 53:33

Alembic bass expensive cost of thousands of dollars
Oh, I never knew he had played with Lee Ritenour. Not the same genre at all.
But the same can be said of Nathan East, he can play any style.
I was so blessed to grow up in the 1980s when there was real music playing live and on the radio. It was an amazing era.
The crystal clear sound of the 80ies. Gotta love it. I grew up with it.
Magnificent ! in memory carlos Vega ...

Carlos Vega ... great drummer.
RIP!
Just read up about him . So very sad 😞
Tremendous drummer!
@@andrewkarp5067 I saw him live a few times with Larry Carlton. So solid.
@@jazz4randall That’s fantastic. I’m officially jealous!
Jeff Porcaro and Carlos Vega play drums on The Imperials - STAND BY THE POWER album from 1982. Amazing album!!
Two greats!
Both of r.i.p those guys
The Phil Perry rendition of Is It You is one of the greatest male vocal performances I have ever heard in my long music-loving life. Love you Phil.
Carlos Vega...What a drummer...Along with Jeff ...what a loss from the drumming community
Phil Perry is doing an excellent job! and the joy he brings to the stage. wauv! thumbs up.
Agree you can’t help but smile along and groove 🎶
The dude can sing!

An Oberheim OB-Xa, Yamaha DX7, some Simmons drum pads and heavily gated reverb on those drum mics..... all is right with the world
Used in the studio
CARLOS you were the man

que en paz descanses Carlos.

It's just really excellent Talent! 👍🎼🎄
Me gustaría escuchar como sonará esta banda si Mark Russo tocara el saxo
Lee Ritenour is fastly becoming one of my favorite guitarist. Ernie Watts on sax is great as well.
it's funny how you can go so many years without hearing about somebody like Lee. I suppose I gotta take off my hat to youtube for suggesting his stuff
how about Larry Carlton.....? He's another that was under my radar until recently. I'd heard his stuff, but never had a face and name to put with it.
@@driftwood9098 I love Larry's music too!
There will never ever be a great R&B artist that will bring great emotional music quite like Phil Perry. Great rendition of "Is It You?"
Ernie still moves us 40 years later. Testament ❤ 🙏. I love all your music Lee. Thank you. And thanks for letting the bass player solo, Jimmy Johnson

I'm 80s baby I always loves 80s synthesizer music I'm a musician
Lee always had the best musicians behind him on the stage. Thirty years ago and today aswell. Great Music.
This show is Legend...one of the best and everlasting of Lee Ritenour's live
I had a video of this show years ago, May be not exactly the same, but i remember all the tracks and it's good to hear them again. Great musicians, very good compositions, great time...

Good Lord, how I miss REAL music. This video is an artifact from a much better creative era. Thanks for making it available.
Have to agree. This lineup was the best of the Rit live
It's a trip seeing Ritenour singing backing vocals. Thanks for posting.
Amazing performance! Lee is amazing guitar player what a great solo in the Dolphin dreams !
Superb performance.
i like how Ernie Watts and Phil Perry have basically the same look ;)
absolutely amazing musicians and singers at the top of their game.
Unbelievable. How do they get vega’s acoustic drums sounding so electronic/gated on some songs? This is so perfect it’s ridiculous
How grreat is this!
Track 1, 3 and 4 some of the best solos I have ever heard-- I had this on Laser Disc and played is all the time

the best Rio funk!
Phil Perry belts a song. Yes, technically gifted etc. But Eric Tagg feels and carresses the song. I prefer the latter.
Exactly… Phil oversinging every time he open his mouth. Eric makes it perfect ❤️…

Did any of them make any mistake? Superb perfection.
No. It was all tight and knocked out of the park. Not a hint of a clunker anywhere.
