@@andrewboeger1792 well I can confirm after playing the game for quite some time myself, that it's nowhere near as bad as most of the hate-players complain... most criticism of the game boils down to people who have crappy hardware which limits performance and the rest is people who want endgame stuff INSTANTLY then whine because there's a grind or you have to use exploit after exploit to skip past what should be months of exploration, combat, and effort. If you like space games and/or flight sims, this game is a blast - made even better if you find the right squadron to play with (especially with the Thargoid war going on right now). If you're the type to try a game out and move on to the next release before completing even the first run, then this probably won't interest you... there is no ticket to the endgame content here and engineering (which is required for all the super high end hard stuff like AX combat) is a bit of a grind. The rest of the complaints about the "grind" come from people who I don't think have ever played a game with a true grind in it (most survival sandbox games, most MMOs, etc.). Compared to some I've played, this is one of the tamest and easiest "grinds" I've ever seen. Just type in "Legendary Weapon" and look at ANY result for ANY MMO if you doubt me lol I'll spend an hour killing space pirates and watching drones bring loot to me while I watch Netflix over the alternative any day.

Maybe not the most hardcore group, but they're huge and have different factions based on what time zone you're in and what your interests are once you get into the game.

@@Slotsauruswas a struggle for me too, I struggled through basic contracts and went with the safe ones until I built up enough cargo capacity and cash reserves to start trading in earnest with the help of the inara tool. Bumbled around for a good 50 hours refitting my ship every play session to try some other get rich quick scheme in a small ship, that was not the way lol Came back after a few years of inactivity, used what cash I somehow had to take a type 6 on a trading spree and made millions per haul, now I'm bumbling around in a type 9 helping friends make money with trade runs :)
I’m a new player and decided to do an on foot data retrieval mission thingy(?) didn’t know how to pull out my weapons on my buggy so I ended up running everyone over to kill them. Most fun I had gaming in a while lmaoo

Yep, i am a newbe in game and was playing during week and one day i realized that game is all about grind, like you may spent 100 hrs and only 10 will be worth it.

Joystick and throttle stick make the game twice as fun, for me at least. Using a good vr headset gives it a completly new dimension...so external input devices are a big factor with this.
I've actually never played Elite outside of VR with a throttle and joystick. As soon as I heard about the Oculus Rift DK1, and Elite Dangerous VR compatibility, I was all in. I got the DK1, then the DK2, then the HTC Vive, and finally a Valve Index. Elite Dangerous was a huge part of the motivation to jump into VR, to "actually" go to space. One of the coolest experiences I've ever had in VR was sitting in the Sidewinder and realizing, as well as feeling the closeness I had to space as the window of the Sidewinder is so close to the pilot. Magical experience.
My occulus meta looks pretty good but the controller is buggy, luckily blue tooth does allow you to use a wireless controller (if your PC has blue tooth)
Dude, I bought a simulator set with a reclining chair and mounts for the throttle joystick. Amazing. My next purchase will be base transducers to make the takeoffs and weapons firing realistic. Love it

Now is the best time to play open play, there's about 15 active players so you can get that real empty space immersion with no interruptions. Make sure you buy it on console as well so you don't have to fuck with the forbidden "update".
I ran into like 4 people while in a month in open. Granted one was someone sitting in Sol ready to gank me on my first visit, but he actually let me go lol. Probably obvious that I was/am new.
I just spent 3 HOURS trying to complete a basic delivery mission and a basic combat mission. Took me an hr to reach the planet for the delivery without crashing into it. Delivered the package. Figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and so the combat mission since it was “nearby”. Took another 30min to reach the combat planet. A FURTHER 30min to figure out how to orbit around the planet to the side the base was on after crashing into the surface once not realizing it was on the other side. Landed perfectly. Immediately realized my starter pistol was woefully incapable of killing the enemies. Which means I wasted all that time getting there for nothing. Abanadoned the mission, got a 250,000 credit fine. Spent another hr flying back to the starting hub to cash in the delivery mission. That gave me a little over 100k credits. So basically I went 150,000 into debt. I still have a lot to learn about how to make travel less frustrating. I don’t get why the game offered me combat missions j couldn’t possibly complete with the starting gear. Feels like the game set me up for failure. Overall a frustrating first session but I know I still have a lot to learn and hoping this video will help make the travel portion less frustrating. If I could get where I needed to go smoother and more efficiently I wouldn’t be so incredibly annoyed by my lack of success.

"Do not fly without a rebuy" Best advice, I was flying with my Imperial Courier today, entered a system and got ambushed by Thargoids, escaped but died due to corrosive damage. 700k repairs, thankfully I had 9 millions but I know that if I was a brand new player without enough money to rebuy, I would have been pissed

Odyssey was a shit show at launch but I tried it again 1 year after it came out. It has improved alot and I see alot of work went into designing the on foot grind and can be enjoyable for those who already enjoy the grind and rewards from doing so. fyi i got 1 second of fame by being the CMDR who did the infinite loop of shame for Yamiks. @DMV 420 try playing the game. Once you get a Grade 5 Suit, G5 weapons and fill the mod slots and try some of the missions. I find them fun. Staring at the faults will cause you to go blind, have fun. c’est la vie
I just redownloaded the game yesterday and did my first delivery mission today. I feel like if i stay at it i will love the game. Im on ps4 and it runs perfectly.

I literally don't understand why people keep saying the game is dying/is dead there's still a good sized playerbase and they announced 2 big updates. I just bought the game w/ Odyssey and I've really been digging the 10 hours I've played so far. The only other option for an online Space Sim is Star Citizen and it's just a demo, not really any options.
yeah no.. those "big" updates are frankly the last gasps. ultimateley once they dump left-over EDO content they planned for "story" that's really it. already the team size has notably shrunk it feels like and while it;s nout outright told to the public, ED is in it's twilight days for active development.
As a new player 🙋🏻♂️ this is one of the greatest video games ever created! If anyone is the slightest fan of the genre i highly recommended to actually give it ago and pay attention, it’s not a casuals game. 10/10 space sim. No questions.

I just started and I gotta say that the tutorial mission does a somewhat good job on explaining really basic basics :D Im only 5 hours in, but I can see that the first challenge the game sets for new player is to learn the menus and huds, which involves messing around with them a bit. If you dont want to do that, then maybe the game is not for you
You seem to have omitted the Elite: Dangerous Market Connector (EDMC). This is really important if you want to make the most of third party tools, as it will ensure that the data from your most recently visited locations is updated to the tools. It makes trading, for instance, a lot more fun and a lot easier.
@@TheYamiks I understand and agree, but without the community support from the data EDMC gathers the other tools wouldn't work at all, so it seems worth a mention in the comments.

Yep, it's funny, my brother and me will call a game a masterpiece, and then rag on it for a good hour. Some people just enjoy being critical, and I think many people don't get that. Elite is a super unique and impressive game, but one that really struggles to meet its potential.

Started this yesterday. Crashed into a sun, couldnt land on a station and almost ducking deleted the game....but then i was like ok, keep going. This morning i managed to do my first landing. It was automatic.
Aww man. When i first started playing I saw all of the information in every menu and was glad to see how much depth the game had... then saw this video and learned most of it is all pointless.. oh well. As long as i get a few dozen hours out of exploring, buying/upgrading ships and pretending I'm a lone longhaul spacer traveling through the galaxy I'll be happy. For awhile. And at the end of the day that's all we really want in a game. Thanks for the video. Can't believe the tutorial didn't explain the power management thing.
Brand new player. At first I thought it was kinda lame how the planets seemed to be static objects that don't do anything, and then I decided to fly straight at one. And then I noticed I was entering orbit. And then I noticed I was entering its "atmosphere" (technically doesn't have one, but still). And then I noticed there's a flight mode. And then I noticed I could engage landing gear and land. And then I noticed I could FUCKING DRIVE AROUND THE SURFACE IN MY CUTE LITTLE ROVER. All of this in VR + HOSAS. I think I found my jam. I might live in this game. Like, just live in it.
Exactly one thing i disagree upon: the advice to avoid multicrew. That one has one HUGE advantage over flying in a wing. When a friend of mine logs in once every few weeks, if we go for wings, we have to meet somewhere first. So of the one or two hours he might have available to play, we will spend half an hour or more traveling somewhere to meet up. Quite a waste of time. Instead i fly a ship which has a fighter hangar on board. When he logs in, he uses telepresence and can fly my fighters. Yes, it's not as lucrative as doing things in a wing. But it saves time, which in some cases matter more than anything else.
Im very glad im not the only one feeling the lack of explanation. Also thank you very much for this, I want to enjoy the game, but from randomly exploding due to heat after droping out of warp, trying to figure out if this random planet is what I need to scan for a mission, or seeing tips mentioning checking gravity pulls and going "wait what?" Its quite discouraging

Funny to be seeing a beginner's guide when the community has almost unanimously agreed that the game is on the way out. Still, good to let the people who want to try it out have the best time that they can.
"Ultimate Downer's Guide" . . . fits many games. For those (like me) who find ED difficult to get into, I suggest trying Starfield (when the price drops to $20-$30). Everything in space is a click away, nice graphics, no grind, you will be invulnerable after 80-100 hours of play, space play ez mode.
Yes all you need is a keyboard and mouse... But nothing will compare to playing with a HOTAS setup. I can switch hands with the stick to mess with my keys, all the extra buttons means so much more control. After 24 hours of play time I already nailed manual landings regularly. The saitek x52 that I have was about $200, and this thing is super durable with plug and play ease. For some it may be a waste of money but for me personally, I'd really miss not having it.
It should be noted that EDDB as of today is finished. I'm sure going forward something will replace it, the fanbase is pretty dedicated for better or worse. With that said, ignore everything in this guide that mentions EDDB but besides that small little detail out of his control I can say that this is a great guide.

I use the Federal Corvette for mining no shield because I am a cool kid like that, I have only died once in the last 2 years I was killed by a rogue rock.
Old player here, one thing I didn't got quite right: Should you choose ED Horizon version and play that, or use Horizon Legacy, or Oddysey (and just forget about on foot missions)? Also, How on earth do you get a ship in oddysey?. One last queston is ED Horizon / Legacy version still getting updates, or only Oddysey ? (With version this or that Im refering about the launcher version button where you can pick which one) Thanks for any amnswer.
Horizons legazcy is saddly suposed to be killed at some point, even if devs don't say it. HOWEVER horizons legacy is also performs better and has prettirer planets with actual old community "lore". HOWEVER HOWEVER : the "normal" non-legacy version gets all the new updates and changes, while legacy will stay the same...till the day that gets axed.
yes. well.. no new ships or "content", as that will be exclusive for EDO.. you know so that it has "value". BUT i highly recommend against EDO lest you REALLY want that FPS /ship content or athmospheric planet landings, as it simply is not worth otherwise and base game alone is about 95% of the good gameplay anyhow

But how do I get the fuel scoop in the first place? I died on my first mission, now I'm lost in some other part of the galaxy so I found another mission and because I couldn't figure out how to quickly make my way to that system I mocked about flying for hours until I reached my destination... where I got killed because I moved during my scan. So here I am, back to the respawn station in yet another system :D
I forgot to mention I overshot my target by about 15 minutes, because in the tutorial the supercruise is automated and here I just flew past the planet while I cuddled my cat?
Damn I was so confused starting in elite. This guide is really helpfull. Didn't know you can master bait in the game. I've been doing taht for years so shouldn't be too hard.
I played this game for 5.1 hours years ago, it confused the hell out of me, I thought I'd watch this video to get properly acquainted I don't think I'll play this, I really do want to play it but yeah..
For missions i found that the passenger ones make the most but can sometimes be a bit time consuming but atleast you can scan each system while doing so and make a couple mill each mission not the best but good for new players as all you need is a passenger cabin which isnt to much money to get
I use a joystick with separate throttle stick. I stuck them to my office chair using 2 monitor mounts costing £12.50. I just rejoined the game after 2 years break... I've forgotten so much
I was looking forward to playing this game, as it's now on the PSN subscription for free. But after doing the basic tutorial and watching this video, this game feels like a second job and I can't get into a game like that again. I've already grinded countless hours into things like Eve Online and Destiny 2 in the past.
This video almost got me back into the game, until engineering part came up and I got PTSD from the grind that made me quit. Ill probably get back into when or if engineering gets better/overhaul but I'm not holding my breath.
I share your pain. I went back after a longer break. The initial engineering grind is overwhelming but with some guides you can unlock everything on a lazy rainy weekend.

Now is the best time to play open play, there's about 15 active players so you can get that real empty space immersion with no interruptions. Make sure you buy it on console as well so you don't have to fuck with the forbidden "update".
I ran into like 4 people while in a month in open. Granted one was someone sitting in Sol ready to gank me on my first visit, but he actually let me go lol. Probably obvious that I was/am new.
I just spent 3 HOURS trying to complete a basic delivery mission and a basic combat mission. Took me an hr to reach the planet for the delivery without crashing into it. Delivered the package. Figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and so the combat mission since it was “nearby”. Took another 30min to reach the combat planet. A FURTHER 30min to figure out how to orbit around the planet to the side the base was on after crashing into the surface once not realizing it was on the other side. Landed perfectly. Immediately realized my starter pistol was woefully incapable of killing the enemies. Which means I wasted all that time getting there for nothing.
Abanadoned the mission, got a 250,000 credit fine. Spent another hr flying back to the starting hub to cash in the delivery mission. That gave me a little over 100k credits. So basically I went 150,000 into debt.
I still have a lot to learn about how to make travel less frustrating. I don’t get why the game offered me combat missions j couldn’t possibly complete with the starting gear. Feels like the game set me up for failure.
Overall a frustrating first session but I know I still have a lot to learn and hoping this video will help make the travel portion less frustrating. If I could get where I needed to go smoother and more efficiently I wouldn’t be so incredibly annoyed by my lack of success.

Best advice, I was flying with my Imperial Courier today, entered a system and got ambushed by Thargoids, escaped but died due to corrosive damage.
700k repairs, thankfully I had 9 millions but I know that if I was a brand new player without enough money to rebuy, I would have been pissed

Odyssey was a shit show at launch but I tried it again 1 year after it came out. It has improved alot and I see alot of work went into designing the on foot grind and can be enjoyable for those who already enjoy the grind and rewards from doing so. fyi i got 1 second of fame by being the CMDR who did the infinite loop of shame for Yamiks. He is really cool and down to earth despite being so popular which is rare.

@DMV 420 try playing the game. Once you get a Grade 5 Suit, G5 weapons and fill the mod slots and try some of the missions. I find them fun. Staring at the faults will cause you to go blind, have fun. c’est la vie

I literally don't understand why people keep saying the game is dying/is dead there's still a good sized playerbase and they announced 2 big updates. I just bought the game w/ Odyssey and I've really been digging the 10 hours I've played so far. The only other option for an online Space Sim is Star Citizen and it's just a demo, not really any options.
yeah no.. those "big" updates are frankly the last gasps. ultimateley once they dump left-over EDO content they planned for "story" that's really it. already the team size has notably shrunk it feels like and while it;s nout outright told to the public, ED is in it's twilight days for active development.

I just started and I gotta say that the tutorial mission does a somewhat good job on explaining really basic basics :D Im only 5 hours in, but I can see that the first challenge the game sets for new player is to learn the menus and huds, which involves messing around with them a bit. If you dont want to do that, then maybe the game is not for you
You seem to have omitted the Elite: Dangerous Market Connector (EDMC). This is really important if you want to make the most of third party tools, as it will ensure that the data from your most recently visited locations is updated to the tools. It makes trading, for instance, a lot more fun and a lot easier.
I never really used that one .. UNDERSTAND that i mentioned the basic most used tools, NOT every SINGLE one!

Started this yesterday. Crashed into a sun, couldnt land on a station and almost ducking deleted the game....but then i was like ok, keep going. This morning i managed to do my first landing. It was automatic.

When i first started playing I saw all of the information in every menu and was glad to see how much depth the game had... then saw this video and learned most of it is all pointless.. oh well. As long as i get a few dozen hours out of exploring, buying/upgrading ships and pretending I'm a lone longhaul spacer traveling through the galaxy I'll be happy. For awhile. And at the end of the day that's all we really want in a game. Thanks for the video. Can't believe the tutorial didn't explain the power management thing.
Brand new player. At first I thought it was kinda lame how the planets seemed to be static objects that don't do anything, and then I decided to fly straight at one. And then I noticed I was entering orbit. And then I noticed I was entering its "atmosphere" (technically doesn't have one, but still). And then I noticed there's a flight mode. And then I noticed I could engage landing gear and land. And then I noticed I could FUCKING DRIVE AROUND THE SURFACE IN MY CUTE LITTLE ROVER.
All of this in VR + HOSAS. I think I found my jam. I might live in this game. Like, just live in it.

Exactly one thing i disagree upon: the advice to avoid multicrew. That one has one HUGE advantage over flying in a wing. When a friend of mine logs in once every few weeks, if we go for wings, we have to meet somewhere first. So of the one or two hours he might have available to play, we will spend half an hour or more traveling somewhere to meet up. Quite a waste of time.
Instead i fly a ship which has a fighter hangar on board. When he logs in, he uses telepresence and can fly my fighters. Yes, it's not as lucrative as doing things in a wing. But it saves time, which in some cases matter more than anything else.

Also thank you very much for this, I want to enjoy the game, but from randomly exploding due to heat after droping out of warp, trying to figure out if this random planet is what I need to scan for a mission, or seeing tips mentioning checking gravity pulls and going "wait what?" Its quite discouraging

"Ultimate Downer's Guide" . . . fits many games. For those (like me) who find ED difficult to get into, I suggest trying Starfield (when the price drops to $20-$30). Everything in space is a click away, nice graphics, no grind, you will be invulnerable after 80-100 hours of play, space play ez mode.
Even if it's ammo, multicannons are so nice for speeding up time to kill, though.
Yes all you need is a keyboard and mouse... But nothing will compare to playing with a HOTAS setup. I can switch hands with the stick to mess with my keys, all the extra buttons means so much more control. After 24 hours of play time I already nailed manual landings regularly. The saitek x52 that I have was about $200, and this thing is super durable with plug and play ease. For some it may be a waste of money but for me personally, I'd really miss not having it.
It should be noted that EDDB as of today is finished. I'm sure going forward something will replace it, the fanbase is pretty dedicated for better or worse. With that said, ignore everything in this guide that mentions EDDB but besides that small little detail out of his control I can say that this is a great guide.

Old player here, one thing I didn't got quite right: Should you choose ED Horizon version and play that, or use Horizon Legacy, or Oddysey (and just forget about on foot missions)?
Also, How on earth do you get a ship in oddysey?.
One last queston is ED Horizon / Legacy version still getting updates, or only Oddysey ? (With version this or that Im refering about the launcher version button where you can pick which one)

Horizons legazcy is saddly suposed to be killed at some point, even if devs don't say it.
HOWEVER horizons legacy is also performs better and has prettirer planets with actual old community "lore".
HOWEVER HOWEVER : the "normal" non-legacy version gets all the new updates and changes, while legacy will stay the same...till the day that gets axed.

well.. no new ships or "content", as that will be exclusive for EDO.. you know so that it has "value".
BUT i highly recommend against EDO lest you REALLY want that FPS /ship content or athmospheric planet landings, as it simply is not worth otherwise and base game alone is about 95% of the good gameplay anyhow

I died on my first mission, now I'm lost in some other part of the galaxy so I found another mission and because I couldn't figure out how to quickly make my way to that system I mocked about flying for hours until I reached my destination... where I got killed because I moved during my scan.
So here I am, back to the respawn station in yet another system :D
I forgot to mention I overshot my target by about 15 minutes, because in the tutorial the supercruise is automated and here I just flew past the planet while I cuddled my cat?

I played this game for 5.1 hours years ago, it confused the hell out of me, I thought I'd watch this video to get properly acquainted I don't think I'll play this, I really do want to play it but yeah..
yeah this game blows.....such good potential ruined.
For missions i found that the passenger ones make the most but can sometimes be a bit time consuming but atleast you can scan each system while doing so and make a couple mill each mission not the best but good for new players as all you need is a passenger cabin which isnt to much money to get
I use a joystick with separate throttle stick. I stuck them to my office chair using 2 monitor mounts costing £12.50.

I was looking forward to playing this game, as it's now on the PSN subscription for free. But after doing the basic tutorial and watching this video, this game feels like a second job and I can't get into a game like that again. I've already grinded countless hours into things like Eve Online and Destiny 2 in the past.

This video almost got me back into the game, until engineering part came up and I got PTSD from the grind that made me quit. Ill probably get back into when or if engineering gets better/overhaul but I'm not holding my breath.
I share your pain. I went back after a longer break. The initial engineering grind is overwhelming but with some guides you can unlock everything on a lazy rainy weekend.
