I just wanna say that even at my age(71) that I look forward to your vids and that only you and my old jewelry teacher, Soham Harrison, care about us viewers being able to see what u see. Also Eric the car guy is in that elite group of Caregivers. Thanks for all u do. The old Choctawman. BTW i've been working around cars since I was a toddler and I'm still learning from pros like you. Thanks again.
Love the ending :D And a big thanks for all those extras you throw in: comparison scope/scantool, mini tool reviews, gratuitous brake cleaner footage and dry humour. It really sets your channel apart and makes it very enjoyable to watch. We appreciate it!!
Awesome video. I know that I'm not the sharpest butter knife in the drawer. But I want you to know that each time I watch a video of yours that you are helping me get the knack of confidently using my scan tools more effectively and more proficiently. Thanks again for another great video.
Eric, that was great for the average DIYer how you showed how to test the heater circuit for the O2 sensor for the goodies that it needs to operate, such as power & ground with the a common test light. It was also pretty cool that you did the same with the sensor ground integrity and to test the communication between the PCM and the O2 sensor with a test light using the 5 volt bias voltage the PCM was sending down the signal return. The PCM uses that bias voltage to check for a open or short to ground. In your case, using the test light ( to ground the signal wire ) you demonstrated that the PCM would of interpreted the 0 volts on the signal wire as a short to ground and when you removed the test light from the signal wire the bias voltage rose back up to 5 volts and the PCM would have interpreted the 5 volts as a open circuit on the signal return because it was unplugged. If you did not have a expensive scan tool ( like most DIYer's )you could simply use a DVM to check for that bias voltage to verify the integrity of the signal wire from the O2 back to the PCM. In ether scenario the PCM would have thrown a code and as you say, turn on that Money Making, Money Light! LOL ! It could also explain why in the past you said that the heater was not working properly and PCM did not throw a code. If the vehicle that you were working on did not have a bias voltage on the O2 sensor heater, the PCM would not know that the heater was malfunctioning, if the heat environment was at the O2s minimum operating temperature and it would continue to operate ( produce a voltage ) but it may be slow to respond or sluggish. Great Vid, Keep e'm coming!
I couldn't put up with the Verus I tried for two weeks. I went for a Solus Ultra and kept my Vantage Pro that I've had for years. I have tried the Verus pro and that was great but I only had it two days off my snap on guy. Great video as ever, brake clean 100% record!
Great lesson, Dr. O. I recently gave in and picked up a U Scope from AES Wave. One of the best purchases I've made. It's pocket size but for a home mechanic it's a great start and has already paid for itself. For about $130 it's a great investment to anyone looking expand their diagnostic abilities. Oh and I'm still waiting on the SMA t-shirt to come on sale
You should try upgrading the verus hard drive to a SSD and upgrade the memory to 1 Gig. I would occasionally have problems starting my verus. I did the upgrade myself in a few hours its the best thing I did!! No more starting issues!! It went from over 2 minutes to start down to 1 minute. Its not hard to do there is instructions on the net. Great video!!
Thanks Eric. This helped me diagnose the upstream o2 on my escort zx2. It was so lazy after the car was warm, almost same exact problem. Would dip down to .1v very very intermittently causing a buck when the engine speed was between 2300-2600rpm. Restarting the car would fix the problem for a bit but it would act up again. It was driving me nuts forever because it never threw a code....
Good Stuff. Appreciate the extra time to demonstrate Live VS Processed data streams. More importantly, Thanks for including the BrakeKleen segment; makes the video complete.
Another excellent video cars are only getting more complicated and having the high tech equipment makes you a better and faster technician . I decided to try the autel maxidas 708 first and see how i like it i am waiting for it to be shipped thanks for the video keep up the great work .
Eric, I left 4 ferrite clamps in a brown envelope in the drop box. I'm interested to see if that helps. looking forward to the Corvette and S10 follow ups and whatever is wrong with the Mercedes. So far, the Dakota has gone through a full tank of gas from Bath to Hornell and Elmira 3 times, no check engine lights at all. Great work sir!
+Randy Gudeahn Cool glad to hear thanks Randy. I was using a pressure transducer today that was noisy and I snapped the chokes over each cable and the signal stayed the same. i will play with them more and let you know thought. Thanks again!
Thumbs up as always Eric! Would've been interesting to see front door data of the sensors being forced both rich and lean with...wait for it...brake cleaner and a vacuum leak...next time. I was expecting a magic trick when you began folding the shop rag at the end but the brake clean polish was way funnier 😂 Time for a pico scope! Don't know what took me so long to get one...love it!
Great comparison. I'm surprised at the comparison with the old sensor. Apparantly the PCM is putting out a signal, but checkout the 02, not good! Great Video!
+South Main Auto Repair So you used brake cleaner for the sake of using brake cleaner just to say you used brake cleaner. I'm sure that plastic piece on the valve cover benefited greatly from the brake cleaner paper towel.

Fuel system status is also changing From closed to when you start the throttle snaps looks like its going back to Open Loop status Eric O @10:30 to @10:47 @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
I think that Snap-On should buy that tool back from you for the price you paid for it including all the repairs and then go find one that works from a different company. I'd be quite upset with that them if I were going through what you're going through. It's just not right. You shouldn't have to pay for repairs on a faulty piece of tech.. I'm angry just thing about. I've got to give you credit for being so level headed about it. Thanks for another fine video, I really appreciate the effort you put out put them together.
Eric I was taught in my state of indiana when getting my emissions certification that scoping the real time of the o2 to see if she's working properly is to be on a frequency scale. There is a set of values at idle and 2500 rpm. I will get you them values. somewhere around 5 hertz at idle. I think Great video showing us the difference between real time process scanner time. Are you really having trouble frequently with the verus. I truly like pico for scopes and factory for our domestic cars. But as we all know you work on alot of different makes and models. Would be costly. Keep up the great camera work and diagnostics.
Great demo on how processed data can be misleading compared to the real-time signal. Would be interesting to see how noisy the signal was with the filter turned off on the Verus, and Peak Detect on. Nice work!
Just curious, but as far as the scope function goes, have you ever considered just purchasing a dedicated "real" oscilloscope now that pretty good ones are available for about $300 to serve that function. They are not specifically automotive, but might offer some nice extra functionality (4 channels, variable filtering/bandwidth, math functions like duty cycle, frequency, rise/fall times, etc.). Hey Eric, I was on craigslist buffalo the other day and I found a modis for sale for like 950.00. it's located in Avoca . I figured I would mention it to ya as a back up scope to your verus and autel.
"Like I'd forget" LMAO! Again another good Video Eric. Keep us informed with the Autel scope, I have the 908 & was looking at extending its features with the scope just to have one tool fits all & convenience. Think I'll be sticking with my Pico

I just had to replace my Solus Ultra , Seems everyone with a Snap On Scanner has issues with them . Even with the limitations that 908 is starting to look good.
how is the bidirectional control on that autel? you can get external filters that would fix that hash on the scope portion. I am sick of my MODIS breaking and am considering getting away from snap on scanners.
Hey Eric, good stuff. Older video. I have an Autel maxisys and would like to know if the quality of the Autel scope is any better. Understand lower end scope. Thanks.
i always rode around with my primary a/f sensor unplugged after i got the heater code but i have a KTUNER ecu [[ kpro for 05-06]] so it was already tuned and ran fine without it now that i did a TSx swap i guess the intial start up needs the 02 sensor because its suck on 14.7 on the tuner app and says OL_FAULT, Plus both fuel trips read 0 at all times if i go past 5% tps the car stalls out will this on sensor cause all these problems where i cant even get the car out the bay door
seen a few videos suggesting cleaning the oxygen sensor for some related codes? can you even do that? one method uses a torch to blast off the soot, something you can do when you bench test it. another soaks the end in gasoline over night
Hello Sir, I have a problem with my Acura TSX 2009, it's misfiring and giving me P0301 code, I changer sparkplugs, ignition coils and. fuel injectors, but problem didn't go away, it does'nt go over 20 mph and checkenging is blinking.
Help I just bought a 1997 Honda Civic with engine d16y8 . That came with code P0141 code . I’ve checked my vehicle and I’m missing the bank 2 . Is capped on the exhaust and I don’t see a connector anywhere . Any help to correct this issue ?
At 12:38 there is a good view of a cable that looks like it's in bad shape - corroded and greenish ... is it a ground for something? Should it be replaced soon? Great video, thanks!
*@**16:58* After removing the _nearly useless_ and badly corroded static/ground strap- you stuck the test light to the valve cover in 2 places, and then the heat shield- resulting in an intermittent light operation, only lighting while directly on a valve cover nut. That strap is there for a reason, I know you know that. It should be eventually replaced. I've seen many strange electrical anomalies occur from a badly corroded or missing static/ground strap (especially here in Central New York).
Haven't had much time to use my autel maxidas so I am glad and thank you for trailblazing for me so I can get some tips before I really get into using mine.
Eric, have you compared the processed data Actron scope to real time? If I had a real scope I would but I don't. Just a thought, I realize the Actro has a small screen.
I also have a verus wireless but I've never had a problem with it. 2 things I would recommend is changing the hard drive to a solid state hard drive. Also never use it as a computer so don't use any other programs or ever go on the Internet with it. I actually don't even connect mine to the net unless I'm updating it.
+Mike Lange Well I am not gonna change the hard drive in it, they should for 10 grand if i is an issue. I also never get on the web with it too b/c it just locks it up and it is slow as death as it is all ready.
what is your thoughts on the maxis scan tool now? what are your thoughts on it for shade trees like me that do diagnostics on machines in other industries?
We just had the muffler replaced on our '99 Honda Civic and about 2 days later the Check Engine light lit up. The ODBII gave a reading of P0131. Is there a chance that the work they did on this might have caused this to happen? I reset the error, but still need to drive it around a bit to see if it comes back. Thanks
+Randy Gudeahn (ProTech) I haven't Randy, I was talking with Ivan and he says that a lot of scopes you can not turn off the "peak detect" feature on and that is why it gets all the noise. He has some scopes that do the same thing. If you get by my way and wanna drop one off I'd give it a try for the sake of experiment though!
I can upgrade this Verus to SSD, if you still have it, I can explain to you how to do it or look it up online. My Verus Pro is running great after I upgraded to SSD.
A tool that relies on Microsoft Windows? There's your problem! We had to scrap an older Tek scope because it ran Windows 2000 and it was just too creaky and fragile to rely on.
+hoppes9 I know, you'd think snap on charging what they do for it would get with the times a bit, but the motto is build it for a nickle and sell it for 10 grand!
Yesterday I was helping a tech at my shop diagnose a no brake light problem and as I was directing him on where to start I said "Get your scope on a rope out and do some hokey pokey on the brake switch" lol you're a bad influence or maybe a good one?
+Drew99GT Haha and they are laughing to because they all ready got paid. Maybe I could do a a whole one hour special on how sucky there service and tool is!? That might get some attention Lol
You made me crack up laughing with that ending you put on there! But you did leave me with one question... When are you going to make use of that rail line nearby and order yourself a couple of boxcars of brake cleaner? Or maybe transition to using tankers for the stuff?
On that snapon tool. I could make a norton ghost backup so if you have issues you can restore the image or just clone the hard drive. Hit me up id do it for cheep if you cant.

I've seen that difference before, comparing scan tool live data vs labscope. I've assumed the difference is a result of a bottleneck in the communication rate between the PCM and the OBD output data port. The PCM is sending a sample of the O2 sensor readings, but of course random infrequent samples of a moving target fluctuate. I like to think it's not an issue with intake communication of the PCM, because otherwise the PCM would have trouble interpreting the info. The OBD port is not part of the regular function for the PCM, the port is there just so lowly humans can glance over the shoulder of a computer. No reason to communicate at top speed.

what's the issue? I still don't understand if you have found the issue yet.
Good afternoon, I find out they still have software updates for the modis.
+GREG Feeney Oh ok thanks
Your welcome. Question is there gonna be a part 2 video on the vette?
you'll be happy tomorrow morning :)
Awesome. Thank you. Btw I learned alot from your recent civic video nice work.
Hey my dad use to always cleaned the air cleaner on top of the carb when he was a mechanic. That way the customer always knew he worked on their car.
Throttle body not carbblol
What if you had a heater code and put 2 new o2s in and still have heater code?
I learned a couple things on this video for my new Autotel Maxsis Elite! Thank you
what is your thoughts on the maxis scan tool now? what are your thoughts on it for shade trees like me that do diagnostics on machines in other industries?
We just had the muffler replaced on our '99 Honda Civic and about 2 days later the Check Engine light lit up.
The ODBII gave a reading of P0131.
Is there a chance that the work they did on this might have caused this to happen?
I reset the error, but still need to drive it around a bit to see if it comes back.
Thanks
hello DR.O..is your autel bidirectional?
What’s a good car scan for diy type work
What’s the PN for that scanner?
"time to do some vtec'in at the drift track"
That’s one of the best cars ever made.
Eric, have you tried a ferrite choke on the Autel leads? I have quite a few if you want to try.
Here is a humdinger for you
I have a 94 Honda Accord standard 16 valve I have a code 21 I do not have a VTEC. So what's the problem?
Overall, how well does the bi directional control with the Alltel work?
+Ozzstar Pretty darn good so far
I can upgrade this Verus to SSD, if you still have it, I can explain to you how to do it or look it up online. My Verus Pro is running great after I upgraded to SSD.
A tool that relies on Microsoft Windows? There's your problem! We had to scrap an older Tek scope because it ran Windows 2000 and it was just too creaky and fragile to rely on.
+hoppes9 I know, you'd think snap on charging what they do for it would get with the times a bit, but the motto is build it for a nickle and sell it for 10 grand!
I found if you close those other pids the speed rate is better on selecting just HO2S
You can get an Autel Maxidas for $500 in the US??
No just the scope part..it's an add-on to the Autel. An accessory.
Eric, how many channels does the Autel scope have? Or are there different options or models?
+GRowe1978 4 and only one option
South Main Auto Repair Cool, I haven't looked into it yet, but we just bought the scan tool. For what it does, you can't beat it for the price.
Scan tools should have the thumbwheel like a Snap-on scanner to turn up the idle.
WHAT MODEL AUTEL R U USING
Nice Video again! . I was hoping you would show the choppy autel scope data.
+mr2law Nahh did wanna beat this car to death.
Yesterday I was helping a tech at my shop diagnose a no brake light problem and as I was directing him on where to start I said "Get your scope on a rope out and do some hokey pokey on the brake switch" lol you're a bad influence or maybe a good one?
+JD A Hey man that is what ya gotta do. Maybe I can sing the hoki poki song next time.
Do busted O2 sensors cause bad fuel mileage? What can be the consequences if left un checked?
Yes, engine will run rich all the time as that is safer than lean.
The last part with the brake cleaner was superb!!! Hahahahahaha
+Maic Salazar Lol thanks
Do the O2 sensors get seized in?
Yeah, that's why some recommended a copper anti-seize when installing new sensors.
Great video, thanks for the information!
Just got my autel and i am curious how good is it on nissan and thanks again keep up the great work .
+8power0 Mine has worked good so far ...
Did you warranty your Snap On Scanner? Did you get any money back?
+Shade Tree Giants HAHA What warranty, they always have a loop hole my friend....
South Main Auto Repair
"We're sorry, but we can't warranty this. You took it out of the packaging." - Snap On
WAIT!? You work for them!!??? Hahaha
I will drop some off at the shop in the door tomorrow.
+Randy Gudeahn (ProTech) Thanks Randy!
I got a problem the Car crank and no star
Great video as usual. I guess the 2 people who disliked this video are trolls or parts changers :/
+dreamer2355 Haha... oh well
Yeah you rite! I been wanting to kick somebodies ass all week , maybe we can locate them. lol
4 Snap On reps have watched this vid as of 2:25 UTC 9/27/2015!!!
+CMDR Sweeper Hey you may be one to something there!
THE BEST GUY SMART KNOW WHAT TO DO
On that snapon tool. I could make a norton ghost backup so if you have issues you can restore the image or just clone the hard drive. Hit me up id do it for cheep if you cant.
is that an autel ms908 ? where can that be bought for $500 ?
+mrsargemeister the ms908 is about $2,200. The four channel scope MP408 that is an accessory for it is what cost $500.00
+SATAMAN Schmidt got it..thanks for the clarification
