  • Knife Making Disc Grinder
    In this short Tools for Making Knives video; knife maker Gillian reviews the interchangeable disc grinder hub from Nielson. The 9 inch disc grinding aluminum hub fits a 5/8 motor shaft and is retained using a key and set screw. Precision machined discs, are secured using nine powerful earth magnets in the hub. This allows for rapid changing of different sand paper grits. Three types of hubs are available, a flat disc, a modified flat disc, and a 1-degree bevel disc. The nielson disc grinder is a great time saver for the serious knife maker.

    Strange coming across this video in my feed now. I have this setup and I wish more people knew about Rod’s design, I tell as many people as I can, it’s an absolute game changer for your flats, your bevels, your plunges and not to mention what you can do with handle materials.
    I think what the knife making community is confused by is the 1 degree bevel disc. Great information you gave on the bevel disk and long blades , but genuinely the point at which the tip passes the point where it’s no longer in contact with friction is about 3” give or take so you can do smaller blades.
    The other thing that makes this a ‘knife makers,’ disk sander is a VFD, being able to switch sides and sand in the same direction in relation to the side you’re working on is key.
    Great video 👌👍🍻🍻

    Could you tell what is the thickness of the interchangeable hubs?

    I figured out what the problem is, there should be an “S” at the end of the word “grinder” in the website address stamped on the back of the disc

    When I tried the website on the back of the disc, it said that my iPhone has been hacked. I’ll check the spelling, but it kept going to that error page.

      It’s a hardcore disc grinder. Think I bought it about 7 years ago.

    can this be used to beveling a knife?

    • @GillianKnives
      @GillianKnives  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 2”x72” grinder is more efficient, but yes the disc with the 1 degree tapering is designed for finishing work on long fixed blades.

      It’s a baldor reliance super motor, 1hp, 3450 rpm, wired 230V, with a KB Electronic motor speed control. The hub is a Nelsen Design Disc Grinder.
