Lindt free cloths.
To refresh old dry wood .

I was a french polisher for many years you can gat fillers or a wax to repair the holes or deeps scrapes and the wax you can purchase can be colour matched
Splendid - nothing more satisfying than rejuvenating speakers!
If your going to use wire wool make sure you either remove the drivers especially the tweeters or run a vacuum at the same time. Any loose metal wool fibres will stick to your drivers and is very difficult to remove. A scotch bright cloth works just as well.
Some simple protective gloves are a great investment, also for your health.
Great job!! I love British Hi Fi gear and Brits are great people. I had a pair of Lentek SP4 speakers. They were so beautiful. The front baffle had an inscription saying they were commissioned by the Crown for Royal Albert Hall! I did a similar re-finish job on them, and like the idiot I am, ended up selling them. Steel wool.
Used to use it to clean the carbon off the obturators on the 120mm gun of my Challenger tank.
With a bottle of full fat coke to decoke the working parts.
It’s also important to keep the speakers away from strong direct sunlight.
Have to be aware that wood has to be nourished just like leather.
It’s an organic material and must be looked after.
I have seen some great wooden chassis on decks too. But very expensive!

Commercial veneers are typically 0.6mm thick.I went to look at some Spendor BC3s and a previous owner had sanded through the veneer on the edges.So they either needed painting or re veneering.
A lot of speakers do need sanding however because the veneer either has bad scratches or the varnish has badly faded.Rather than sand you should use a paint stripper first and then 180 grit on a hard timber sanding block with special care to keep it flat near the cabinet edges.i have restored plenty of speakers that way.
For non wood Wd40 or lord Sheraton leather shine on a lint free cloth, believe it or not give a good freshen up.
Even on some woods brings up the grain nice

In the US we have 0000 steel wool and I use 'Restore a Finish' in a one step process. It has a stain in it and comes in different colors like walnut, maple, etc. It kind of 'melts' the old finish and takes out scratches and light water stains. I used to restore pianos.

Kelvin, great advice there its very rewarding repairing / restoring speakers. I bought a pair of previously owned Spendor A5's floor standers with a chunk taken out of the base plate (dropped I guess) and they looked very "sore". I cleaned up the sharp edges and got some two part wood filler repaired it and blended it in with various abrasive papers and then sprayed satin black as they were originally. No one has spotted the repair so far.

Stuff works great! I’ve used Danish or Howard’s on most of my cabinet restores. Some took a couple of coats. Strip any wax first. Then 00 steel wool. Let dry for a few days between.

Instead of just re-varnishing my Ditton 66's, I went with 'Blackboard black' for the finish.
Not only is this product cheap and easy to apply, but it had the twofold benefit of giving the 66's a much more modern look whilst greatly reducing their otherwise
over the top, visual dominance of the listening room. Splendid!

This was good advice. I have speakers that need exactly that treatment, but I wasn't sure what the best way would be. I was planning on a matte varnish, but that wouldn't have been good.

I've conducted this type of renovation on both Celestion UL6s and some Castle floorstanders.
The only difference in technique was that I used matt varnish rather than oil. Ultra thin coats are essential.
The advantage that I heard and saw was a tightening of the bass particularly in the Celestions.
I put this down to the cabinets being better sealed and more rigid.
I'm not sure an oil finish would achieve the same result.

if you had a veneered surface in much worse nick only some solvent like acetone or lacquer thinner will get rid of the imperfections, especially sticky old glue residues. lacquer thinner does a quicker job than an isopropyl most of the times.

Unfortunately a stray cat managed to sneak into our home and had a pee on the base of my left vintage loudspeaker! The stains were so bad I had to sand it down and this removed the colour from the bottom 20 cms. They look awful. I will try and stain them before using wood oil. Thankyou.

Yes this will work on Teak. But my Tannoy Berkeley are walnut with real varnish on them. So they would needed to be sanded by hand with 200 or 400 grid sandpaper. Then varnished with water based Varathane with a foam brush. P.S. you are oiling the cabinets, that is Not varnishing. There’s quite a difference. Wouldn’t you say ?

Be extra careful with Danish oil. It's very volatile and can sometimes spontaneously combust!

You can use black shoe polish to touch up marks on black veneer and vinyl veneer.

You could also use masking tape or something and cling film etc to put a cover over the drivers while you work

Nice tips thanks, I just bought a pair of b&w dm4's it has water stains and heat stains on it, what is the best way to remove these stains before applying danish oil?
I'd say you pretty much have to sand back everything to raw. Then stain and finish. Start with 120 or higher grit as you don't want deep grooves left. Start higher
