I feel like a lot of people are also missing what Hi-Rez's priorities should be for Smite 2. Their first priorities for Smite 2 seem to be, adding all the gods, improving gameplay, and improving matchmaking, which should take priority over adding every cosmetic.

I'm gonna say it: the fact that the biggest "bad thing" people talk about when discussing smite 2 is "skin ports" is proof that they've done things right. We could have had controversies about gameplay, about prices, about removing content or platforms, but we've got none of that. That's a sequel done right imo, at least as far as announcements go

That's only because "there's no game", nobody played it yet, if the game launches and there's tons of bugs and problems, these will just get added to the pile of complaints that already exists.
Some people are way too optimistic about this game, just because it's a new engine, UE 5 is "brand new", no one knows how to use it to it's full potential.
I hope i'm wrong, but it's Hi-Rez we are talking about, i'm just not going to have any expectations.

The fact is the vast majority of people, particularly pros and streamers which drive a large portion of the community, will switch over to Smite 2. Any hold outs will also switch over once Smite 1 is effectively dead. Secondly, it implies that the sequel wont expand the community. Seems probable that a large number of new players will start playing Smite 2, so even if a lot of old fans did stop playing, I think Smite 2 still has a really good outlook.

I struggle to understand the anger, but relate to the disappointment regarding the skins.
All Smite is doing, is what the likes of COD and FIFA have been doing for years, but to an actual effect.
Whilst COD and FIFA do it yearly, throwing away any customization or progression you made, all for the sake of paying $80 to play the same game and do it again.
Smite 1 advances 2 generations forward to UE5 with extreme mechanical and engine upgrades that benefits both the community and the developers massively after almost 13 years.
They compensate players by giving them their Gems back, including those they didn't pay for and allow you to use them in Smite 2, which they didn't have to do. And you don't even need to pay any money if you don't want to to play Smite 2.
Why is Smite 2 the one getting all the shit here?

Here's the thing when you buy skins in games you're not really buying something to have you're supporting the game so it can continue to grow and produce content. It is true that you will lose it eventually but the game will go on longer as long as it has support. I completely understand the frustration and anger. It really can be seen as just double-dipping into pockets of players but its not really. I do think they might port those skins over eventually depending on how long the game goes on. Honestly I think they way that they are handling the transition is actually pretty generous considering, if they really wanted to double-dip they wouldn't have anything brought over. Also one thing people forget is that Smite 1 isn't immediately going off-line as soon as Smite 2 launch. I'm sure that it won't be supported/updated as much and probably nothing new will be added but its not going to be forcing people to upgrade. I know that there will be clock on Smite 1. One thing I hope is the legacy stuff isn't just at the start of Smite 2. I don't have a system or PC that can play Smite 2 so I won't be there at the start but if I get something in the future I hope I do get stuff from Smite 1.

One thing I haven't seen commented on is that how you got your skins makes a big difference. For example, if you got your skin from a direct purchase at 1,500 gems, then yes, you can repurchase the skin in the new game for 750. But if you got your skin from a lucky 400 gem chest roll, you may end up spending a LOT more to get that same skin in Smite 2 since you will either have to direct purchase for 750, or make perhaps many chest rolls to regain the same skin.

In smite 1 we have so many shit skins, various recolors and lame T1 and T2 skins.

To the point on "you put money into skins, what did you expect?" What I expect when I put money into a free game is for the devs to make the game better with the money I spent on the game. For me personally, that money isn't just "I want the skin" it has always been that I love this game and I want the devs to continue to make the game better. For a long time I can say with certainty that HiRez was not doing that. I can't tell you what they were doing with the money they were getting, but over the last 6-7 years it has not been into improving Smite, but for them to branch out into other games. Now of course that is a good thing for a game dev company. However, like stated in this video, their team is small and time spent on other games took away from improving Smite and I think that not great.
I will say that the new port in Smite 2 for UE5 IS something I can say my money went to because it does look like they have put in a lot of work to make the game look much better. Im not sure how much better the gameplay will be and the new mechanics and changes to Gods they are making, but from what I see we are going into a positive direction.
Oh and I'm going to say it, half the skins in the game are re-colors. I don't want Re-colors ported in. In fact I want them to implement the color option skins by default in Smite 2. Give us all the power to choose re-colors that we like, don't just port them all over.

This is what people don't get, they have focused on (stupidly expensive) skins for several years at the expense of not putting hardly anything into Smite. People buying SKINS are what kept them alive, yet are the only ones getting hurt with this move. Obviously they can't port every skin, but the more popular and expensive ones absolutely should get ported, and people who have literally kept the company afloat shouldn't be the ones getting owned.. HiRez has been scummy in the past so it's not like we should just trust them either, they'll probably find a way to resell the same stuff we already paid for.

I personally think that they should take this as another chance to interact with the community. I say let's have a poll to vote for like the top skins for each god and transfer like the number one for each god or top 2. I think that would be pretty neat cause sure they may have a stat telling them which skin is used more, but maybe the community has a differing choice, from what stats say, as to which skin for a god out of all the ones each god has is the best one. That sounds like a fun community event and good compromise as well cause I have personal favs I really would want to see in Smite 2. Speaking from the perspective as someone who was upset when I heard they weren't going to transfer any skins, then finding out they would transfer a few. I was open to that idea it was the immediate thought I had . Obviously, if I can't have them all, then just let me have the best ones I like. I say that is the best compromise for both gamers and devs is to just do a select few of the "Greatest Hits" so to speak of skins. Also I think everone can agree that the T5 should be of the first that get brought over. But that's just me I love my T5 Ares

A HUGE amount of players that were playing those seasons have attachments (skins/items) to the game and return every now and then. Way more than the active average of 12k. They've had the lowest playtime, and we had smite 2 dropped on it without much warning. There are skins i bought like 2 days before smite 2 got announced, to now know that they're obsolete? I feel like just expanding to year 10 would make it a lot better. maybe not the SPL skins from the most recent battlepass, since those teams may not even continue to exist in smite 2, but it would just help feel any purchases for more recent skins feel more valued.

I have probably over 300-340 skins in smite which isn’t a lot compared to the 1300+ skins in the game but of those 300 I have I can tell you I spent probably less then $300 dollars on 30% of those and 70% is from the daily rewards gems and chests that you unlock from the free battle pass versions or in just playing a match. Yes I am pissed i agree but the compromise hirez is giving in return for those skins I own in understandable and heck of all those top tier skins I own I always use the classic ones more than any other skin.

as succinct as possible I am a game developer, unreal engine has tools for porting assets from one version of the engine to the other however that doesn't change the visual fidelity of the skin. what they haven;t explained is the person hours it would take isn't for porting the skins but making them fit with other skins. it is NOT a good use of time to update those skins to be as good as the visuals in smite 2 they just wouldn't fit and making them fit is more work than making new skins that fit. i agree want hi res i went a better game experience

People don't understand development work and the difference between UE3 and UE5, and people don't understand the point of view from the business and financial side. People make false equivalences to others games, when those games run on a different engine and the engine is not 2 generations old.
It should be obvious that UE3 is VERY DIFFERENT from UE5 and thus transferring skins over is extremely difficult. That is why they forego that option. All 1,600 skins would need to start from scratch: coded, designed, fx, voiced, programed, all in UE5. There is no port option, no copy/paste, no easy transfer. Everything needs to be from scratch. How many times does it have to be repeated? The work is not easy.
Games like Overwatch can transfer skins because OW 1 and 2 is the SAME engine and therefore easier to complete.
From business and financial point of view, where can they make profit if Legacy Gems were a 100% off coupon? A $70 price tag, lots of paid DLC, and no God Pack instead each God costing real-life-money instead of favour or gems would be one alternative to ensuring profits.
So which would you prefer? Smite 2 is not a volunteer free development game.

yeah people that dont know anything about game dev think that since they are the same engine, that they work the same way. hirez is lucky they got to stretch U3 as much as they did because games cant even been made in U3 anymore.

I like a lot of what was said in this video. Only concern I have now is how they price the skins going forward.

I have 1216 skins. Don't plan on using 70% of them from looking outdated and newer better ones come out. The fact that they wanna give us gems to make skins 50% off is a LOSS for the company. Be happy they even did that!

Legacy gems only cover 50% of the fees.....You would have to rebuy your skin you bought in smite 1 at 50% off...

I'm definitely bummed about some of my skins not transferring over (i.e. Korra Skadi) but I'd rather they do this than the game just shutting down, which is what will happen in the near future if they don't update it and attract new players. I've been playing on and off since the alpha 10 years ago and I feel like this compromise is very fair - can't think a better way for them to accomplish their goal of making Smite 2 while not shafting their supporter base.

The only real thing I don't like is the legacy gems how you can't just use them fully to buy skins seeing they said you can't use them to buy every skin. It's not a major issue because I'm surprised they're even doing it but it's more just how I've spent 5k easy on gems and I want to feel validated

You can use them to fully buy old skins. And to pay for half of new skins. Which makes sense since its new skins.
Some skins wont have a discount at all due to them mostly being crossovers and having a cpntract, like the vtuber skins

It is normal to not be able to transfer all skins but what about gods, i was playing since closed beta and bought every god with gold. Do i get all gods except new ones, or no. If not it would be a shame and it discourages people who did not put hundreds of dollars into game, but they played for ages and earned them.

The biggest issue in smite 2 is ps4 and xbox1 not being able to play SMITE 2
