  • Platinum-based chemotherapy is often used in treating testicular, ovarian, bladder, lung, and head and neck cancers. How can we use dietary approaches to help prevent one of its most common side effects?

I am just an old man who watches his labs like a hawk. And adjust my lifestyle to that set of labs. My suggestion for you to consider follows. Kill sugar intake by keeping carbs to less than 21 daily. Ensure your omega 3 epa dha total is not less than omega 6. That means no seed oils such as mayo and commercial salad dressings. Vinegar and olive oil only. Or sour cream. 9 ounces salad from arugula daily. And 10 ounces high fat organic meats. Steak, shrimp, fish, chicken etc. In 21 days I believe you will an increase in your quality of life. At 75 and after two heart attacks, I feel like 25 again. Screw the doctor on this, just try it. 😊

I disagree with a low carb diet for everyone, but I do agree with a diet that is low in sugar and refined carbs. I will work on videos about omega-3s and omega-6s as well as carbohydrates.🙂

No such thing as incurable, they said my stage 4b squamous cell carcinoma would get me in 2 months and that was 4 years ago. Investigate natural treatments. Paw paw and aspirin are both good for chemo resistance. Please look outside the box.

Thank you for your comments and questions. Please do discuss your symptoms and blood work results with your doctor. The approaches to chemotherapy side effects depending on their severity. Monitoring your response to treatment is also very crucial to determine the next step. Please do keep close communication with your doctor.
I discussed dietary approaches for low magnesium levels in this video. The information was intended as food for thoughts. Individualized prevention and treatment plan definitely needs individual's doctor's assessment and decision.

Hello Dr. L, thank you so much for your insight and interesting information. Could you please give your opinion on neem, curcumin, vitamin D, vitamin K and electrolytes(chloride, potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium citrate, B6 P-5-P) supplement intake on top of leafy, fruit/veg and higher protein food diet during active chemo? Is it a good approach or would you recommend some alteration? Is it also ok to exercise ( with lighter weights) during chemo to activate muscle mass creation or would you not recommend such exercise at all based on your practice? Chemo is cisplatin based and given for bladder cancer treatment ( stage 2). Many thanks in advance.

      Thank you for your questions.
As a general rule, vitamin and mineral supplements are not recommended without any deficiencies. I have some videos on vitamin and mineral supplements as well as antioxidant use. I'll put the links below.
I do recommend exercise during cancer treatment unless there are clear restrictions. Yes, the main purpose is to maintain/improve muscle mass. It also reduces treatment side effects, elevates mood and improves quality of life to name other related benefits.
There is some laboratory evidence of neem inhibiting cancer growth, however, that is not adequate to suggest benefit clinically. This link may be useful. www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integrative-medicine/herbs/neem

      Thank you for your comment.
Swiss chard and turnip greens or other leafy vegetables can be good options.
I don't know if your no spinach is because of your doctor's instruction or your personal experience. There is evidence that purine-rich vegetables, like spinach and asparagus, do not increase gout attacks, but purine-rich meats, nuts, cheese and legumes as well as alcohol do.
